Nowitzki’s record 29 points in 4th down Jazz 96-85
Dirk Nowitzki scored a team-record 29 points in a fourth-quarter comeback that pushed the Mavericks over the Utah Jazz 96-85 on Tuesday night.
Nowitzki broke the Maverick’s franchise record of 24 points, in any quarter, set by Mark Aguirre against Denver on March 24, 1984.
The Mavs had only scored 52 points through three quarters, Nowitzki had 11 points up to that point, and the Mavs were 15 points down to the Jazz going into the fourth.
The 7-0 Nowitzki would end with a season-high 40 points on the night; which propelled the Mavs to 3-1, outscoring the Jazz 44-18 in the final period.
“We just kept feeding him,” Dallas’ Shawn Marion said. “He had it going. He was unstoppable.”
He really was, Nowitzki shot 7-for-8 from the field and hit all 14 of his free throw attempts in the last quarter.
Overall Nowitzki hit 12-22 shots, was 15-16 from the line, and pulled down 11 rebounds. For good measure, Nowitzki also threw in season highs in assists (5) and blocked shots (5).
“It was an ugly game,” Nowitzki said. “We couldn’t get anything going for three quarters. We were slow. We were looking for a spark offensively and I was able to do that tonight.”
With the game at hand, Nowitzki exited the game to a standing ovation with 28 seconds to play.
Notes: The NBA record for points in a fourth quarter is Wilt Chamberlain’s 31 for Philadelphia on March 2, 1962 against the New York Knicks. The mark for points in any quarter is 33 shared by San Antonio’s George Gervin (April 9, 1978) and Denver’s Carmelo Anthony (Dec. 10, 2008). And the NBA record for most free-throws without a miss in a quarter was set by Vince Carter, when he went 16-for-16 against Miami in 2005.
