PETA upset with BatManu Ginóbili
Some reverberations after Manu Ginóbili smacked the life out of a stray bat that found its way into the Alamodome/AT&T center on Saturday night.
After knocking the winged-mammal to the ground, Manu picked it up, carried it off the court and handed it to a team official. Discuss the Bat Smackdown.
Edit: The bat is reportedly fine after flying away from a maintenance worker.
Naturally PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, were upset and responded to Manu’s actions via their official blog:
“To bludgeon a 4-ounce animal to death, it takes either a small man or a totally unthinking one—with no respect or consideration for lives humbler than his own. This is a time when athletes in particular need to be on their best behavior around any animal and show that they have brains and a heart, not just reactionary brawn.
Bats always try to avoid contact with humans, and there are plenty of easy ways to keep bats out of a basketball arena (or your home). We hope that the next time someone’s life is on the line, Manu Ginobili will take just a few seconds to think before he acts. ”
And the Spurs didn’t want Manu foaming at the mouth after a foul call, so they had Ginobili vaccinated for rabies just in case.
Through his Facebook page, Manu suggested that people “avoid contact with bats, skunks, raccoons, rats and animals like that.”
