Fabricio Oberto signs with Washington Wizards
In a move that was reported three weeks ago, when Fabricio Oberto verbally agreed to join the Washington Wizards for the coming season, Oberto finally arrived in Washington and signed a one-year deal worth about $2 million.
“Fabricio is a proven winner with extensive playoff experience,” said Ernie Grunfeld, the Wizards president of basketball operations.
“He is a skilled big man and a rugged veteran that augments our frontcourt depth at both the center and power forward positions.”
Oberto, from Argentina, is 34 years old and spent his entire four-year NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs. He was traded to the Detroit Pistons this offseason in a three-team deal that brought Richard Jefferson to the Spurs. He was waived by the Pistons a week later.
The 6-10 Oberto was not included on Argentina’s roster for the 2009 Tournament of the Americas. Head coach Sergio Hernández gave “Fabri” a break from the team, wanting him to be ready for the 2010 World Championships in Turkey.
Argentina will also be missing Manu Ginóbili, Andrés Nocioni, and Carlos Delfino, however the Argentines are still one of the strong favorites to medal in the tournament.
