Did Brandon Jennings just score 55 points?
Blake Griffin who again? In just his seventh NBA game, rookie Brandon Jennings scored a career high 55 points; the highest point total for any NBA player this season – rookie or not.
Jennings’ 55 points is just three points shy of the rookie scoring record set by Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 58 on January 25, 1960, but his total was enough to become the youngest player to score 50 points, beating out LeBron James.
The 6-2 first year guard showed why he was such ranked the #1 prep player just a year ago before heading off to Europe in an uneventful run with Lottomatica Roma of the Euroleague.
Even though Jennings didn’t do particularly well in Europe, could his development overseas have contributed to his first year maturity in the NBA?

The 20-year old Jennings didn’t even score in the first quarter, so his 55 points are even more amazing especially in the third quarter when he blazed the nets for 29 points.
The rookie hit 21 of 34 shots on a variety of jumper and drives to the basket which included hitting 7 of 8 three point attempts, and 6-8 free throws in defeating the Golden State Warriors 129-125.
Jennings also added 5 rebounds and 5 assists in his first match up with another strong prospect from the 2009 NBA draft – Stephen Curry.
After starting off slowly in the preseason, Jennings has hit a stride once the regular season began having shown his offensive ability by having had games of 24, 25, and 32 points most recently in a win over the Denver Nuggets.
Even before his offensive outburst tonight, Jennings was already averaging 20.3 points per game, first amongst rookies, and 5.3 assists, second amongst rookies while shooting 45.5% from the field, 45% from three and 85% from the free-throw line.
Impressive considering that NBA players generally shoot relatively bad in the their first season in the league.
It’s worth mentioning that the Warriors have the NBA’s second worst defense, but it doesn’t take away from Jennings ability to put the ball in the basket, and boy, did Brandon Jennings fill it up tonight.
