The 2016 FIBA Manila Olympic Qualifying Tournament is taking place between July 5-10, 2016. The knockout phase of the tournament will take place on July 9th and the championship game on July 10th. The overall winner of the tournament will earn a spot in the 2016 Rio Olympics basketball tournament. Teams that did not earn a spot in the knockout phase include the host team, the Philippines and Senegal. There are two additional qualifying tournaments being held to help determine the final three spots for teams to participate in the Rio Games.
What Teams are participating in the Mania Qualifying Tournament?
There were a total of six teams invited to play in the Manila Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT). Each team had a slightly different path to earning a spot in the tournament. Senegal earned a spot by coming in fourth place in the 2015 AfroBasket tournament; Turkey was a wildcard selection; New Zealand was the 2015 FIBA Oceania Championship Runner Up; France was the 3rd place finisher in the EuroBasket 2015 tournament, and the Philippines are the host team.
Where is the Manila OQT Being Played?
The primary venue for the tournament in Manila is the Mall of Asia Arena. The arena is located in Pasay that is considered to be part of the overall Metro Manila location and the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship was previously hosted at the location.
