Igor Rakočević returning to the NBA?
According to El Mundo Deportivo, Igor Rakočević has an offer for 3 years at $12 million to return to the NBA and the Euroleague MVP for January is considering all options.
“There are possibilities of returning,” Rakocevic told Belgrade’s Sport Magazine.
“I thought my time in the NBA was closed six years ago when I played there, but there is an interesting offer that I will look at, the same as the others I have. I’m probably going into my final big contract and I have to think hard about what I do.”
Below is a translation of the article:
Igor Rakocevic, recent winner of the King’s Cup with Tau Ceramica, has a chance to return to the NBA next season. The magazine says that Rakocevic has an offer for 12 million dollars for three years with a franchise in the US league, something which would be difficult for him to get in Europe.
Tau Ceramica is ready to “throw out the house through the window” to renew the Serbian guard (at first appearance, the offer seems to be for two years), but the Euroleague’s and ACB’s current scoring leader is not without offers. In light of his excellent season, Greek and Russian clubs have already made their initial offers with the player but will have a tough go at it competing with an NBA team that appears to be in the Eastern Conference.
The 30-year old Serbian guard was originally drafted in the second round, 51st overall in the 2000 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Rakocevic wouldn’t arrive in Minnesota until he was 24 years old and would only play one season in the NBA (2002-03) where he was used sparingly in 42 games (1.9 pts in 5.8 minutes).
Rakocevic would be traded to the San Antonio Spurs the next season, only to be released. He would return to Europe and sign with Red Star Belgrade before moving on to play with Pamesa Valencia, Real Madrid, and is currently leading the Euroleague in scoring with Tau Cerámica.
