          • NBBF appoints former player and coach Ayo Bakare as the technical director alongside making some re-organizations for the Committees. It seems that they have a long term goal up until 2017.

            • Still no compelling reason why the sudden departure of Bakare as the technical director of development for the Nigerian basketball federation. Last I checked, he was drawing up plans for 2017 and beyond.

                • 2015 FIBA Afro Basket: Fund threatens D’Tigers participation

Nigeria’s participation in the 2015 FIBA Africa Men’s Championship (FIBA Afro Basket) holding in Tunisia may hit a snag if information coming from a key member of Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) is anything to go by.

With the D’Tigers scheduled to face Burkina-Faso in a qualifier this month, there are indications that NBBF is still struggling to raise fund for the championship and could be forced to withdraw the D’Tigers from the competition unless funds are made available.

Coach Sani Ahmed of Kano Pillars told Newswatch Times Sports that the federation is still waiting for the National Sports Commission (NSC) to avail them fund to intensify preparations for coming qualifiers against Burkina Faso.

He admitted that it will be unacceptable if D’Tigers are unable to feature in the 2015 FIBA Afro Basket, which will serve as qualifiers for the summer FIBA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games in Rio Janeiro, Brazil.

“I’ve been in touch with the federation and I can tell you that there is no support yet from the NSC concerning the Nations Cup in Tunisia.
“As we all know, International competition is under the NSC, but up till this moment, the NSC has not given NBBF any money to start camping for the national team and if it continues this way, we may not go to the Nations Cup and the All African Games in Congo Brazzaville to defend our trophy,” he said.

                      • AAG/Afrobasket joint preliminaries: National teams may start camping this weekend

President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Tijani Umar, on Monday said the federation’s national teams would likely resume camp this weekend ahead of the All-Africa Games (AAG)/Afrobasket joint preliminaries.

Umar told newsmen in Abuja that the National Sports Commission (NSC) has promised to give the federation the necessary funds this week for preparations to start next week.

"What has held back the camp is funding, but the NSC has given us its words that money will be available this week. So, if we get that, we will resume camping by weekend.

This is because their (the teams) resumption to camp has been long overdue and we have to start once we get what we need,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the male and female national teams were expected to begin camping in preparation for the joint preliminary competitions for the 2015 AAG/Afrobasket.

The male national team will face Burkina Faso in a home and away fixture on a yet-to-be-decided date in February.

The female national team, on the other hand, will face the women teams in FIBA Africa Zone 3, namely Niger Republic, Cote D’Ivoire, Togo, Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Liberia and Ghana.

The NBBF president said he had earlier threatened to resign his position if the national teams were not able to participate in the all-important qualifiers.

"What I am trying to say is that if there are funds to be given from any source, either the private sector or through the government, they should come at the right time.

Otherwise, if we don’t play in the tournament, and lose out in the end, then there is no point remaining the leader of the federation.

It is needless being the leader of a failed organisation. It doesn’t make any sense."
