That tournament looks pretty awesome. Is there a website for it? The best information I could find was at the Basketball Federation of India website. I know it's asking a lot, but I would love it if the BFI published some statistics are recaps of the games...

It's been four years since the National Basketball Association (NBA) made its foray into India, but little has changed in a sport that's still plagued by lack of infrastructure and mediocre performances. Experts attribute it to the NBA's negligible work at the grassroot level. "Unless you concentrate at the grassroots, the standard of the game will never improve," a national-level coach told Hindustan Times on the sidelines of the Basketball Nationals on Thursday.

"Only a miniscule section appears to have benefited from NBA. There is no uniform system of coaching in the country, either. So, what has the NBA done? All they want is publicity," said another senior coach.

"In the last four years, NBA officials have just conducted three to four-day seminars or clinics in metros like Mumbai and Delhi and gone back. The rest of the year there is nothing," he added.

The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) felt the NBA had provided technical support to the federation. "It supported the national team with two experts during the Asian Games," said BFI secretary-general, Harish Sharma. He added the BFI had requested the number of experts be doubled in the New Year.

The presence of two NBA coaches, however, didn't change the fate of the India cagers in Guangzhou. "The only difference they (coaches) made was that we could avenge our defeat against Afghanistan," joked a player.

Last year, the NBA, in collaboration with a corporate house, did initiate a school and college league, but it was confined to just three cities - Bangalore, Mumbai and Ludhiana. Recently, Delhi has also been included.

In Ludhiana, the event got going only after the Punjab government stepped in to fund the travel allowances of the outstation school teams.

As the year rolls over, the future is hazy. A senior coach based in Ludhiana, said, "On what lines will the league be run in 2011? We are yet to receive any communication."

Despite the uncertainty, the BFI appears confident. "The players will get more opportunities next year," said Sharma.

"Indian Railways stamped their mark over Indian Basketball as they completed three-years of double victory of both the Men’s and the Women’s squads at the 61st IMG-Reliance National Basketball Championship for Men and Women at the Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday, January 4, 2011.

For the ninth straight year, the Women’s final of the National Basketball Championship was held between budding rivals Indian Railways and Delhi. And for the eight straight year, Indian Railways upheld their dominance in the rivalry and over Women’s basketball in India by destroying Delhi 95-55. Indian Railways have won 23 of the last 25 National Championships, and once again, this was their year in the tournament.

It was more of the same in the Men’s Final, as Indian Railways muscled their way towards a gritty victory against their rivals, Services. This was the third straight National Basketball Championship title for the Railways Men.

After eight days of excitement, from December 28th – January 4th, at the Talkatora Stadium and the Modern School in Barakhamba, the finals of the championship were a showcase event. In the Women’s game, Delhi were no match for Railways’ devastating duo of Geethu Anna Jose (29 points) and Anju (23), as they were blown out by 40 points. Prashanti Singh and Raspreet Sidhu scored 18 and 16 points respectively for the hosts.

In the Men’s game, youngster Arjun Singh caught fire to lead Indian Railways a victory over Services, 74-62. Arjun had 27 points, whereas Jay Ram Jat scored 25 points in a losing effort for the Services side.

Harish Sharma, the Secretary-General of the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) expressed his satisfaction towards a successful tournament. “Thanks to the help of our sponsors, IMG-Reliance, this was the biggest national championship to date. The play on the court didn’t disappoint and it’s obvious for us to see that basketball is growing at an acceleration pace in India. Once again, I would like to thank and congratulate all the participating teams, coaches, managers, support staff, and fans who have helped make this a memorable championship.”

“2010 was a big year for Indian basketball and I’m hoping that 2011 will be even better!” Sharma added.

BFI’s president RS Gill was the honorable guest to present the awards to the winning teams, along with Arjuna Award winner and Indian Basketball legend Mr. Khushi Ram. Both the winning teams received a cash prize of Rs. 1.5 lakhs each. Runners-up were rewarded Rs. 1 lakh each and third-place winners were rewarded Rs. 50,000 each."

BFI-IMG plan professional basketball league by 2012

NEW DELHI: Basketball Federation of India secretary general Harish Sharma Tuesday revealed to SportzPower the BFI's plan to tipoff India's first professional league in collaboration with IMG and has the support from Federartion of International Basketball (FIBA).

The chances are high that the league will start by 2012.

Sharma said: "We are quite ready to start the college league this year and are working hard to stage the professional league by next year."

He explained that this will be an IPL-like professional league and there will be foreign players coming in.

"IMG has the expertise in terms of format and other technical aspects, so that is already there in place. Besides, IMG has all the commercial rights for the basketball federation for the next 30 years. So there will be no hurdle on that score," Sharma assured.

The structure of the league and the format is being worked upon by IMG, he informed.

Asked whether FIBA would agree to this and allow foreign players to play here, Sharma assured that FIBA is all for promoting professional basketball and especially in India, so they have their consent too behind this. "FIBA wants more and more professional leagues to come up, so this is perfectly in line with their thinking."

He reiterated BFA's commitment to professionlise basketball as a sport in the country and says that this is the first big step. "We hope that we are in right direction," he said.

However, he refused ro divulge other details, saying these are early days and work is going on.

Is Indian Railways a case of a club that is able to simply "buy" the best players or do they truly have a good system for creating good players?

I know the nationals are an amateur competition, but with all these kinds of competitions there always seems to be one businessman who is really interested in having the best team, so that businessman "buys" the team.

Anybody have thoughts or ideas about this?

i dont think its businessmen who fund the teams ... but govt utilities services
                            and state sports associations...

railways and serivices are the only two non-state teams and they meet in the championship

railways has won 23 of the last 25 chmapionships, the state teams are usually inferior competition.

Looks like there is some progress being made toward a professional league, then! That's great. According to that link, the four top players and coaches made $660 for three months. Other players made at least $220. That's really not too bad considering the average person makes something like $1,000 a year.
