PHOENIX, Ariz. – Chris Banchero amassed 31 points and 10 assists Friday, but the Seattle Pacific men were outscored by 16 points from the free throw line in an 88-82 loss to Fort Lewis on the first day of the GCU Holiday Classic at Antelope Gymnasium.

Banchero (Seattle, Wash./O’Dea HS) played a part in 57 of the Falcons’ 82 points, including assists on six of their 10 baskets from 3-point range. The senior point guard hit 10 of 19 shots from the field and converted 10 of his 12 free throws.

The Falcons lost despite shooting 55 percent (30 of 55) as a team, including 10 of 18 on treys.

“To me, anytime you score in the 80s and shoot 55 percent from the floor you should probably win,” said second-year SPU coach Ryan Looney.

Instead, Fort Lewis (3-0) won the game by compiling a 36-26 rebounding advantage while converting 28 of 35 free throws. SPU shot 12 of 19 from the line.

SPU (1-2) lost its second straight game after opening the season with a 102-62 rout of Cal State East Bay. The Falcons fell 68-61 against Dixie State at home last Saturday.

“To sum it up, the same things that hurt us against Dixie State hurt us again tonight,” said Looney. “Fort Lewis was the tougher team. They were more physical, which resulted in them getting to the free throw line more.

“We didn’t do a good enough job keeping them off the offensive glass and gave up 15 offensive rebounds.”

Senior Ryan Sweet (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap HS) joined Banchero in double-figures for the Falcons with 18 points.

Matt Morris scored 23 points to lead Fort Lewis, which also got 21 from DeAndre Lansdowne and 13 from Daniel Steffensen.

Both teams received votes in this week’s (Nov. 23) national coaches’ poll. SPU dropped from 10th last week to No. 29 in the current rankings and the Skyhawks had the 35th-highest vote total.

Sweet made a layup three minutes into the game that gave the Falcons an early 9-2 lead. That would be their largest lead of the game as Fort Lewis scored the next 13 points to go ahead 15-9 en route to a 37-33 halftime margin.

A three-point play by Dorian Williams with 17:17 left to play provided the Skyhawks with their widest advantage at 44-37. Banchero responded with a 3-pointer and two free throws, starting a 14-5 run that netted a 51-49 SPU edge with 14:07 remaining.

The Falcons led or were tied for the next 10 minutes before Fort Lewis went ahead 74-72 on a Morris layup with 4:23 to play. SPU answered Skyhawks’ points to forge the game’s 11th and 12th ties before Fort Lewis took the lead for good at 78-76 on a layup by Lansdowne with 3:22 on the clock.

Fort Lewis players made four free throws during the final two minutes to secure the win.

Banchero had two 30-point performances last season. He reached the 30-point plateau in all three of SPU’s victorious exhibition games this year, including 38 at Eastern Washington and 33 at Nevada. He was the 2010 West Region and Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year and is a 2011 preseason All-American.

“Chris did a nice job on the offensive end today,” said Looney. “We needed him to do that, especially after Andy (Poling) went down.”

Poling (Portland, Ore.), a 6-foot-11 sophomore post player, was limited to just 11 minutes due to an ankle injury. He is a transfer from Gonzaga.

The SPU men remain in Phoenix to clash with host Grand Canyon on Saturday at 6:15 p.m. Pacific Time. That game airs on a live webcast that can be accessed at: http://www.b2livetv.com/partner_members.asp?id=78

Well, Lutz and Banchero are different. Lutz never averaged close to what Banchero has at the moment. Lutz was a victim of overhyping of some forumers here.

Well Lutz was averaging close to 12 PPG and .375 3ptFG in C-USA a Div 1 league. while Banchero is averaging 24++ PPG with a 50%+ FG% in GNAC a Div 2 league.. if we play the rule of numbers here Banchero has the upper hand but Div1 is very different from Div2. it's like UAAP vs CeSAFI.

                          • we said/thought that lutz will be the shooter of the team..ala caidic for ncc team.

                            lutz is a shooter.
                            banchero is a scorer.

we cant compare what they can give to the team. if we are goint to compare them with their stats outside gilas. they have different roles for their team.

banchero has killer instincts. fast, skilled, big guard.
Lutz was himself...before he joined gilas.

i think the type of banchero will not be downed by the system that gilas is using.
and i doubt that he is just a hype.

                            • ^^ think Alex Cabagnot yeah Alex can burn hoops but Banchero might be slightly better can finish the hoop and flush it but Alex is a better point guard a team cancer maybe not, his college team give great stats to its key players remember his sophomore team mate scoring and rebounding imba nos.

But still safe to say he is the best offensive gilas point Guard player(I think he will because he played already with them) for now but I cannot tell if he is the best guy in the position remember imo the best individual performance by a rp team player that I see is Andy Barroca when he torched Riyadi in 2009 champions cup, even Chris banchero bet my ___ will not surpass that

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Chris Banchero tallied 24 of his 34 points on 3-pointers Saturday, leading Seattle Pacific to a 79-68 men’s basketball victory over host Grand Canyon on the final day of the GCU Holiday Classic at Antelope Gymnasium.

Banchero surpassed the 30-point plateau for the second straight night. The 6-foot-1 senior point guard from Seattle’s O’Dea High School compiled 31 points and 10 assists in Friday’s 88-82 loss to Fort Lewis.

The Falcons (2-2) halted a two-game losing streak powered by Banchero’s 34 points that equaled his career high. His eight 3-point baskets were one shy of the school single-game record of nine held by Drake Hudgins (Mar. 4, 2000) and Dustin Bremerman (Dec. 2 2006).

Banchero made 8 of 14 treys as part of his 10-for-22 shooting night.

Senior Jeff Downs (Kirkland, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) was the only other Falcon in double figures with 14 points. Twelve of those points came from the free throw line, including seven during the final 1:06 that helped repel a GCU rally.

The Antelopes (2-3) trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half. Banchero hit his third consecutive 3-pointer with 12:31 left to play to provide a 57-40 Falcons lead.

GCU steadily chipped away at the deficit and drew within 68-63 on a Steve Morin trey with 1:19 remaining.

Led by Downs, SPU converted 11 of 13 free throws at the end to secure its first road win.

Kyle Speed scored 19 points to pace the Antelopes, who also got 14 from Morin and 12 from Rony Tchatchoua.

The SPU men shot 44.4 percent (24 of 54) for the game. They were more accurate behind the 3-point line at 45.4 percent (10 of 22) than their 43.8-percent (14 of 32) effort inside the arc.

The Antelopes were also stellar from outside, shooting 47.0 percent (8 of 17) on treys. They shot 42.6 percent (23 of 54) from the field overall.

Ryan Sweet (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap HS) and Scott Morse (Central Point, Ore.) each grabbed eight rebounds to lead SPU’s 39-33 advantage on the boards.

The Falcons jumped out to a 6-2 lead on 3-pointers by Banchero and Jake Anderson (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison HS). GCU scored the next six points to cause the first of eight lead changes during the opening half that also featured five ties.

Speed converted two free throws with 5:54 left in the half to give the Antelopes their last lead at 25-24. Banchero answered with a layup off a back-door pass from Sweet, giving SPU the lead for good.

The Falcons outscored GCU 13-5 over the final 5:41 of the period en route to a 37-30 halftime advantage. That was their largest lead in the opening half.

Banchero has already matched his two 30-point performances from last season. He reached the 30-point plateau in all three of SPU’s exhibition wins this year, including 38 points at Eastern Washington and 33 at Nevada. Banchero was the 2010 West Region and Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year and is a 2011 preseason All-American.

The Falcons and Grand Canyon meet again next Saturday at 7 p.m. in Seattle on the second day of the SPU Invitational at Brougham Pavilion.

Seattle Pacific plays Chaminade on Friday at 7 p.m. in the tournament’s first round. The Silverswords are coming off a 68-64 upset of Oklahoma on Wednesday in the Maui Invitational. Central Washington is also taking part in the SPU Invitational, playing at 5 p.m. both days.
