Christian Standhardinger capped his memorable stay in Hawai’i with yet another memorable basketball performance.

Standhardinger had 29 points, 17 rebounds and three assists to lead Grantco Pacific to a 100-96 victory over Solar Universe in the championship game of the Hawai’i College Basketball Summer League on Saturday night at Manoa Valley Recreation Center gym.

Standhardinger is a two-time all-conference forward at the University of Hawai’i. He is scheduled to depart Honolulu within the next week to begin pursuing a professional basketball career overseas.

“We played the best game we played all season … that’s exactly how I want my team to be,” said Standhardinger, a 6-foot-8 forward. “If it counts, when it counts, then we produce and that’s what champions do.”

Grantco Pacific entered the Summer League playoffs as the No. 5 seed and a 3-7 regular-season record. Led by Standhardinger’s 98 points in three games, Grantco Pacific pulled off three consecutive upsets to win the title.

“He’s an incredible player …one of the better players to ever play for UH in many years,” Grantco Pacific coach Allen Silva said. “Our offense is to give him the ball as much as possible. Christian has to get touches. What Christian did tonight, when they double-teamed him, he dumped it off.”

Standhardinger shot 10 of 19 from the field and 8 of 8 on free throws, including two free throws with three seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Grantco Pacific trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half. Former UH guard Geremy Robinson ignited the rally in the second half by scoring 10 consecutive points during a 12-0 surge that put Grantco Pacific ahead, 70-61.

“We just gotta keep playing no matter what … if you’re down or you’re up,” Standhardinger said. “A basketball game comes in waves and we just gotta understand that. We just kept coming, kept coming and that’s why we won the game at the end.”

Robinson finished with 20 points on 8 of 17 shooting, and also contributed eight assists and seven rebounds.

Grantco Pacific also received key contributions from Sean Caddell (25 points), Josh Burnett (14 points) and Farbod Farman (10 points, 10 rebounds).

Grantco Pacific increased its lead to 13 in the second half, but Solar Universe refused to give in and made it interesting at the end.

UH sophomore guard Dyrbe Enos drained a 3-pointer with 1:08 remaining that cut the Grantco Pacific lead to 94-93. Grantco Pacific secured the victory with clutch free throw shooting in the final minute from Caddell and Standhardinger.

Enos, the only current UH player to see action in the championship game of the Summer League, finished with five points, one assist and a steal.

Former ‘Iolani and Washington State star Derrick Low led Solar Universe with 34 points. Aukai Wong added 27 and Kona Makaula 18. Former UH forward Tim Shepherd contributed four points and seven rebounds.

Prior to the game, Standhardinger was announced as the league’s Most Outstanding Player.

      • In case you haven't seen the youtube series 10000 hours, the director who also happens to be a trainer, works out with unknown high school players with the goal of getting them to college. Most if not all of them are guards standing below 6 ft. In the 3rd episode, they introduced a Filipino from the bay area named Simon Enciso who I believe is now playing Div 2 ball.

After a inspiring FIBA world cup. its time we find some unknown big guns that may be usefull for our team Gilas. We could also inquire about Oden. He was once rumored to have Filipino roots. He is a Free agent at the moment. We have nothing to lose but a lot to gain. Thus townsend have any Grand kids playing hoops. Let us find them and find them now. I want our GILAS boys to go back at the world games and beat those so called powerhouse of basketball. We are still the best. PINOYS are!!!!!!!

                    • Meaningful Minutes For Jordan Clarkson Ahead?
                      by Chris Walton 1d ago

Are you salivating at the performances of Jordan Clarkson in the NBA Summer League? I certainly am, and I have plenty of reason to do so. The scoring, speed, and play-making that he displayed made every penny spent on his draft rights (from the Washington Wizards) worth it. Clarkson will be entering his rookie season, but he is poised to make an immediate impact with the Los Angeles Lakers.

With only Jeremy Lin and Steve Nash at point guard, the uncertainty that comes with consistency and health from both boosts his chances at minutes. Confidence coming from the Laker organization was indicated in their waiving of last year’s starter, Kendall Marshall.

Why are we overreacting to the Summer League? Clarkson displayed the kind of poise and control expected out of a prospect with NBA experience. His play produced 15.8 points per game in five games on 42.4 percent shooting. He even showed off improved outside shooting at 42.1 percent from three-point range.

To add to his scoring output, Clarkson showed his ability to run an offense as a lead guard. He operated out of the pick and roll to attack the basket and create for teammates. Not only was he impressive there, but he showed explosiveness and good decision-making in transition. Much of his plays included him threading the needle to finish, or swiftly dishing passes to others at the basket.

Consider that the Lakers will rely on Clarkson’s type of game, as he will be surrounded by Kobe Bryant, Carlos Boozer, and Julius Randle. He is an ideal fit in the speed of today’s NBA. The quickness combined with his 6’5″ frame could serve rather formidable on both ends of the court. Defensively, he displayed the willingness to compete against opposing shooting and point guards. This is a great sign for Los Angeles. Clarkson’s ability provides the Lakers with versatility against opponents.

While Jeremy Lin and Steve Nash are far more experienced than Clarkson, new head coach Byron Scott may take the chance of developing him early. As it’s become an issue, Nash has not been able to string together an entire season of games since coming to the Lakers. To compound that matter, he will be going into the year at 40 years of age. Can you trust him to hold up an entire year? Would you want to? The gamble might be too great of a risk.

Jeremy Lin seems like a safer bet to start for Los Angeles, but his days with the Houston Rockets leave much to be desired. Last season, he lost minutes to Patrick Beverly and fell out of the rotation. On top of a reduced role, his contract of $8.7 million has weighed on an underwhelming stint after “Linsanity”. The combination of Clarkson and Lin brings the Lakers a different dimension athletically. The two players are similar in skillset, and could create some interesting lineups for Los Angeles.

The Lakers rarely draft productive rookies, and it seems that things just may change this season. By offering big minutes to Clarkson, it allows him to mesh with Xavier Henry, Nick Young, Ed Davis, and Julius Randle. These players will likely become the core for the Lakers in the future. Point guard is an evolving position in the NBA. By building confidence and allowing Clarkson to soak up the experience he needs, he can follow the path of other great players. Of course he doesn’t possess the level of talent of a Russell Westbrook or Stephen Curry, but these players also played big minutes as rookies. Quite similar to Clarkson, they were also in search of comfort as true point guards.

Jordan Clarkson must be allowed to just be a player. Whether the Lakers want him to see minutes at either guard spot, he must contribute. His game translates well to the NBA, and with so many questions at point guard, he has the opportunity to make some noise. Los Angeles has signed him to a two-year deal, so the team definitely believes in his talent. Now it is up to Byron Scott to put him in position, and Clarkson must believe in himself.

                            • Kobe Paras Class: 2016

Another guard named 'Kobe' in the NBA? Kobe Paras a 6'6 junior from the Philippines at LA Cathedral is getting ready.

                              - Kobe Legends (@KobeLegends) June 20, 2014

When Paras took the court for Compton Magic Purple and Will Middlebrooks this summer, he was already a celebrity in the Philippines (see 40,000 twitter followers). Under Middlebrooks, though, Paras has taken his game to another level. After sitting out last year, Paras broke onto the AAU circuit as a virtual unknown: no longer. The 6-6 guard/wing has a ridiculous vertical leap and one of the higher basketball IQ's you'll come across. Boston College, UC Irvine, California, Oregon State, and New Mexico are just a few of the high major programs to have jumped on the rising junior early. With Paras teaming up alongside fellow 2016 prospect Lucas Siewert -- a 6-11 Brazilian national with five high-major offers already -- Cathedral High should challenge defending champs Bishop Montgomery for the State Championship.

Offers already on the table, or just expressing interest? Those are two different things.
                                Keep running, big boy.
