Now that Frankie stu..dly insists on rejecting better players to give his son a room at Team Animo, well, Melo better make sure he plays well everytime he is on the fu..ing court.

Or else ... I hope the Bedan community will give him the "proper" (i.e., treat him like you would Mark Andaya when he is on the floor) welcome.
Melo Lim's insertion into the San Beda roster reminds me of how LA Mumar was given a spot on the ADMU roster over guys like Cabero, Quimpo and Maglipon during the dark days of the program.

Honestly, I pity this kid. Whether the Red Lions win it all this season or not, he will always be subject to ridicule from the San Beda supporters. If San Beda wins the championship, he will be tagged as the team's freeloader. If San Beda loses, he will be the scapegoat.

You can try going to Arellano, AUF, EAC and other schools to buy patron tickets. Heard they are having a hard time selling the higher priced tickets.

Ticketnet is also a good option. I was told that you have to bring your alumni ID so that they will not suspect you as a scalper. Do insist on buying patron tickets. Yes, I was told they have patron tickets but they control the distribution and a limited number are sold on a daily basis.

Suggest you go there right when Ticketnet opens and flash your pearly whites. Say good morning and don't forget to wear office attire. It helps.
Thanks Shaq ..... might go to Legarda tom.

So going there at Araneta wearing my favorite but tattered old Crispa "Sando" plus "puruntong" shorts is not a good idea

MANILA, Philippines – College of St- Benilde is again counting on its wingmen to carry the fight in NCAA season 85.

"Our strength lies on our wingmen. They are athletic and they can match up well with other teams," said Blazers coach Richard del Rosario

Two-guard Jeff Morial and small forward Mark de Guzman are expected to provide offensive firepower for the Blazers, who face expansion team Angeles University Foundation on June 29 at the FilOil Arena in San Juan.

Morial plays for Hapee/Licealiz in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) while De Guzman was a former member of RP Youth Team that played in several international tournaments.

Center Robbie Manalac and forwards Chuck Delanon and Willian Johnston will man the slot while point guard Angelo Montecastro will quarterback for the Blazers, who had a forgettable 4-10 win-loss card in last season’s eliminations.

"Right now, we're trying to make sure that our players are in the right condition physically and mentally," said Del Rosario.

CSB last won the title in 2000, two years after entering as an expansion team, at the expense of San Sebastian.

The Blazers were then bannered by former NCAA MVP Sunday Salvacion (now playing for Ginebra in the PBA) along with Al Magpayo and Jondan Salvador.

Del Rosario, meanwhile, is not about to take Pampanga-based AUF for granted although he admitted he is yet to see the Great Danes play.

“We’ll come up with a good play and hopefully, we won’t be surprised by AUF. They’re no pushovers. Pampanga is a known breeding ground for good basketball players,” added Del Rosario.

I hope they can redeem themselves after their dismal performance last season. Without a legit bigman, I highly doubt it though... But hey, "Bilog ang Bola!"

85th Season Will Be Red and White Year Again

85 years is an awfully long time. Most people that old would probably be already on an assisted living diet, maybe even already wearing adult diapers, or writing their last will and testament. Not so for the oldest and most prestigious college varsity league in the land though. This year the National Collegiate Athletic Association turns a grand old 85 years. As usual, all eyes are on the centerpiece college basketball tournament.

San Beda College’s Red Lions have ruled the men’s basketball competition the last three years. They did it behind the dynamic duo of 6-foot-8 Nigerian giant Samuel Ekwe and 5-foot-11 pointguard John Paul Escobal. Ekwe was adjudged most valuable player in their first and third championship seasons. He could have easily completed an individual MVP grand slam of his own were it not for a freak call that resulted in a suspension in Season 83. Both men have since completed their eligibility and have moved on to pro careers. Ekwe was last with the Trace Laguna Stallions of the Liga Pilipinas while Escobal is with the Talk N Text Phone Pals of the PBA.

Nothing to worry about though, as the Red Lions of Season 85 are more than capable of defending the crown for a fourth straight year. It will not necessarily be as easy as in years past, but there is little to indicate that any team will definitely dethrone the Red Lions in Season 85. This team may not be as deep, as big and as talented as the last three years, but San Beda is this year’s Host School and certainly would not want to be embarrassed in the premiere basketball events.

6-foot-7 American import Sudan Daniels is the new man to keep an eye upon. He displays incredible athletic ability in a long and agile package. Daniels, unlike other college imports, is a legit American who already knew the game well when he came to the Philippine Islands. Ekwe, for all his accomplishments, came to the country barely knowing the game and needed at least three years to grasp its nuances. Daniels is a typical American baller who wants to dunk everything, but he has also learned how to work the low blocks as a converted center. He has just come off a championship campaign in the Nike Summer League where he was also named MVP. “I really hope we can build on this momentum and carry it into the NCAA,” he said during the Nike awarding ceremonies.

Daniels will have plenty of help in getting that 4-Peat. A lot of San Beda veterans are returning this year: 5-foot-11 JR Tecson and 6-foot-3 Bam Gamalinda are arguably the most important ones. These two are intelligent and patient players who will take up the leadership cudgels for the season. Tecson has developed into a clutch long-range shooter, while Gamalinda matches up well with any forward in the league. Also returning are chunky 6-foot-3 center JR Taganas, brawny 6-foot-5 center Dave Marcelo, 5-foot-7 pointguards Chico Tirona and Melo Lim, and 6-foot swingman Garvo Lanete. This is a core that has played together well for at least two years. Perhaps the most important returnee though is 6-foot-5 do-it-all forward Jake Pascual, a former NCAA high school MVP. Pascual literally saved the Red Lions and assured their grand slam in critical stages of crucial games last season with his amazing all-around versatility.

San Beda of course will not get served its 4-Peat on a silver platter. A couple of other teams are looking to challenge the Red and White dynasty. Jose Rizal University and San Sebastian College seem to be the biggest and most serious challengers to the crown, with their depth, talent and versatility.

The JRU Heavy Bombers still have a very potent and veteran core group led by 6-foot-5 center James Sena, 5-foot-9 pointguard Mark Cagoco, 6-foot-2 swingman John Wilson and 6-foot-2 forward Marvin Hayes. These four have the experience, talent and will to make a game of every contest, and in fact led the way when JRU beat San Beda in the first round of last season, quite a distinction for them. Joining them are more battle-tested veterans: 5-foot-8 pointguard Jay Bulangis, 5-foot-9 guard Nate Matute, 5-foot-10 African swingman Nchotu Njei, 6-foot-1 swingman Jay Agas, 6-foot-2 forward Jon Lopez, 6-foot-3 forward Jecster Apinan and 6-foot-5 center John Montemayor. That makes the Heavy Bombers at least two players deep at every position, more than a match for the Red Lions’ roster. JRU however will have to do without 6-foot-8 African import Etame Joe, who suffered a knee injury and might miss the entire season. Valuable rotation players Maui Pradas and Jason Nocom have used up their eligibility and are no longer around as well.

The San Sebastian Golden Stags are another team on the rise. They gave San Beda all they could handle in a highly physical championship match in the Nike Summer League, and inflicted an elimination round loss against the Red Lions in the Fil Oil. They no longer have superstars Jim Viray and Jason Ballesteros around, but they still have a potent lineup with many returning veterans. 6-foot-1 gunner Jimbo Aquino, 6-foot-2 forward Gilbert Bulangis and 5-foot-8 pointguard Pamboy Raymundo lead the way. Aquino is now the new main offensive weapon, Bulangis has taken on the enforcer role, while Raymundo is the new team leader. They are rejoined by 5-foot-11 guard Jonathan Semira, 5-foot-8 pointguards Anthony Del Rio and Raymond Maconocido, and 6-foot-4 forward-center Dave Najorda. Key additions include 6-foot-3 forward-center Ronald Pascual and 6-foot-2 forward Calvin Abueva. 6-foot-3 forward-center Mark Anthony “Tonton” Bringas might still return as well.

A dark horse for this season is Letran College. The Knights had some rather sudden personnel losses but still retain a lot of talent. 5-foot-10 pointguard RJ Jazul and 6-foot-3 small forward Rey Guevarra are the best at their positions in the NCAA. As long as they are with the Knights, head coach Louie Alas can count on being at least in the Final 4. A good enough break here and there and the Knights might even crash the Finals. 6-foot-6 center John Foronda and 6-foot-4 power forward Jam Cortez provide size and muscle in the paint and rebounding insurance. Also returning are 5-foot-8 pointguard Reymar Gutilban, 5-foot-11 gunner JP Belencion, and 6-foot-3 center-forward Jun Alas. Kevin Alas, the 6-foot hotshot out of their own high school program also joins the team this year. Gone are Regin Raneses, Alvyn Cabonce, Kojak Melegrito, Clarence Foronda and Anjoe Latonio. Latonio and the younger Foronda could have played again this year but chose to transfer to Far Eastern University in the UAAP.

Mapua Tech is another dark horse who might make things interesting leading up to the Final 4. Superstar Kelvin Dela Pena is gone, and his numbers and leadership might be impossible to replace. Also gone are hotshot swingman Ian Mazo and hardworking forward Neil Pascual. Still around though are 5-foot-8 shooter Allan Mangahas, versatile 6-foot-3 forward Maki Acosta, 6-foot-5 centers Jason Pascual and Mark Sarangay, 5-foot-10 guard TG Guillermo, 6-foot-2 swingman Kevin Espinosa and 5-foot-11 swingman Erwin “Wency” Cornejo. This is a Mapua team that can shoot well from the outside, with every player capable of hitting the 18 to 20-foot jumpshot, making them a tricky match-up challenge.

Among the three new teams, Arellano University might make the most noise. The Chieftains are hardcore legends who have taken down UAAP and NCAA teams with their frenetic run and gun style of play. Hardcore circuit veterans who might be seeing action in the NCAA include: 6-foot-5 center Ed Rivera, 6-foot-4 power forward Nap Apostol, 6-foot-4 forward Adrian Celada, 6-foot-2 swingman Isaiah Ciriacruz and 5-foot-1 pointguard Leonard “Bimbot” Anquilo. The NCAA can thank its lucky stars that superstars Orlando Daroya and Jordan Melanio are no longer with Arellano, having used up all their collegiate eligibility. This is a team that believes the early offense and quick ball movement are religion, and they can pile up points in bunches in a hurry.

Every other team is going to struggle in Season 85 though, and will have to look forward to next season and beyond to build up and find their own high-impact recruits. When all is said and done, the color of victory in Season 85 will still be Red and White.

                          • Oh MAN!!! I was looking forward to Etame Joe and Sudan Daniels' "Clash"! A block by Joe or a facial by Daniels would have brought the house down!!! Well, I hope Joe gets better...

                              University of Perpetual Help Altas

                              2008 Record: 2-12, 8th place

Head Coach: Boris Aldeguer (1st Year)

Key Losses: Rommel Balboa, Franz Dysam, Neil de la Cruz, Mike Kong, Jibbson Kong, Andy Mejos, Harry Petilos, Ronald Reyes

Key Additions: Jonathan Belorio, Billy Carullo, Chrisper Elorpe, Lester Dickens, Michael de la Cruz, Vincent Medrana, Lawrence Manalo, Stevenson Suyat, Jason Salvado, Dale Villadoes.

Holdovers: Raffy Ynion, Nathaniel Salanga, John Galabin, Rommel Vivero, Christian Liaz, Robert Hainga

Background: Newly appointed Head Coach Boris Aldeguer will have his hands full this Season from an already dismal performance last year. Though this former coach from the De La Salle Zobel Green Archers know how to win, still, doubts linger on how the Altas will perfom in Season 85 with the kind of material they’ve assembled for the war ahead.

Key Changes: With Ronald Reyes and Neil De La Cruz out due to an ACL injury while Franz Dysam opted to stay in his hometown of Cebu City to attend to some family matters, the point Guard chores will be left in the hands of rookie Chris Elorpe. John Galabin will be expected to start as the utility man for this squad and will be expected to contribute more from his 3-points in 15 minute production last year.

Outlook: Without a legitimate big man on board, Coach Aldeguer will have to rely on natural small forward, Nathaniel Salanga and burly Raffy Ynion to take care of the shaded area on both ends. Coach Aldeguer will have to focus his point of attack from the perimeter and on occasion, if situations would permit, the Altas can draw out the opposing team’s big man then use their natural abilities to take advantage. With their lack of ceiling, expect the Altas to rebound the basketball by committee and Coach Aldeguer to preach transition defense.

Prognosis: Even with his credentials, without much talent, Coach Aldeguer will have to whip-in his creative juices to keep the Altas on course in every quarter, in every situation of every game for them to win, and it will be a struggle. “I have some recruits in the pipeline and are now undergoing residency but that will be for next season”, said Coach Aldeguer. This Season 85, learning will be a plus, but winning will be another huge minus for the Altas this year.

                              San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags

2008 Record: 9-5, Fifth, Eliminated in a playoff for a Final Four slot

                              Coach: Renato Agustin (1st Season)

Key Losses: Jason Ballesteros, Franz Delgado, Froilan Saquillo, Jim Viray, Vergel Zulueta,

Key Additions: Calvin Abueva, Raffy Gusi, Jason Gatchalian, Erickson Gatchalian, Dexter Maiquez, Ronald Pascual, Ian Sangalang.

Holdovers: Jimbo Aquino, Raymond Maconocido, Mark Bringas, Gilbert Bulawan, Jonathan Semira, Dave Najorda, John Paul Raymundo, Anthony Del Rio, Roberto Bartolo

Background: If it wasn’t for the JRU Heavy Bombers’ resurgence late in the elimination round, San Sebastian could be tasting its first trip to the Final Four since Season 81. But even without Jason Ballesteros and Jim Viray, newly appointed Golden Stags Head Coach, Ato Agustin, will still have the priviledge of leading this team to another crack at the playoffs and maybe, all the way to the finals.

Key Changes: Changes are for the better. The Golden Stags have just added more weapons into their stockpile of an already skillful line up. Calvin Abueva, Ronald Pascual and Ian Sangalang are legitimate “basketball players” that can play on both ends in two or maybe up to three positions. Raymaundo, Aquino, Bringas, Bulawan and Najorda already form a reliable core for, adding these three into the mix will make the Golden Stags a nasty team ready for primetime.

Outlook: With the massive build, the Golden Stags are now poised to at least reach the Final Four. The possibility of going all the way to the finals is on the horizon. This team have been prepped to match up with anyone in the league plus the fact that Coach Agustin is a proven winner since his playing days in the pros and that alone can inject some needed toughness, a staple they lacked last year under Coach Jorge Gallent.

Prognosis: The Golden Stags are ready to turn the corner this Season 85. They have the manpower, the pieces plus the skills with a new coach, San Sebastian has the opportunity to go all the way.

                              San Beda College Red Lions

2008 Record: 11-3, Split Final Four Series with the Mapua Cardinals, NCAA Season 84 Champions vs. JRU Heavy Bombers, 2-1, 3rd Straight NCAA Title.

Head Coach: Frankie Lim (3rd year)

Key Losses: Sam Ekwe, Pong Escobal, Ogie Menor, Kris Taupa, Eduardo Canlas

Key Additions: Sudan Daniel, Rome de la Rosa, Anjo Caram

Holdovers: Chico Tirona, Borgie Hermida, Bam Gamalinda, Jom Villanueva, J.R. Tecson, Jay-R Taganas, Dave Marcelo, Jake Pascual, Gino Soliman, Garvo Lanete.

Background: Three Championships is an accomplishment for an Institution that has waited 28 years. For a team that is so talented, it lost focus in a mid-season mix up with unexpected events and was on the verge of self-destruction at seasons’ end if not for Coach Frankie Lim’s iron hand that kept the ship sailing until confetti flowed from above the coliseum to ceremoniously ignite San Beda’s historic quest.

Key Changes: Leadership and imposing elements in this team will be slightly absent with Pong Escobal and Sam Ekwe finally hanging up their collegiate jerseys. Borgie Hermida, with a bit of a disability after suffering an ACL injury during the 2008 PCC, will have to take the cudgels at the Point Guard spot assuming his playing condition is up to par. While Hermida is getting his game rhythm back, expect Chico Tirona or Jom Villanueva to share some minutes at the point guard spot. After a year of waiting, Sudan Daniel will finally suit up his Red and White uniform to take care of the middle on both ends. Su has showed some improvement during the later part of the preseason after their training in Indiana, U.S.A. Another great addition is 6′3 two-guard, small forward Rome de la Rosa touted as the actual replacement to Ogie Menor who opted to turn pro after years of service with San Beda.

Outlook: The Red Lions are still loaded but this edition is not as overawe as last year. For 3rd year head coach Frankie Lim, this will be the most challenging season of his collegiate coaching career. The Red Lions still have the experience and talent to realistically reach the Final Four, better yet, enter the Finals for the 4th consecutive time. But a 4th consecutive title? I sincerely believe that the gas has run out and its about time to put their feet back on the ground.

Prognosis: The Red Lions are still strong in all departments. The Red Lions had three championships not because of their offense, its their stern commitment to defense that has made them tough to beat. Their defense triggers their transition attack and their offense is sound when they share the ball and head hunt for the open man.

                              Arellano University Chiefs

Credential: 14th and 15th National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) Back to Back Champions

Head Coach: Cresencio Ablan, Jr. (1st Year)

Key Losses: Jordan Melano and Orlando Daroya.

Holdovers: Jerome Agustin – Guard, Leonard Anquilo – Guard, Andrian Celada – Forward
Isaiah Ciria Cruz – Forward, Giorgio Ciria Cruz – Center, Ronnel Del Rosario – Center
Ed Rivera – Center, Rodrigo Apostol – Guard, Jerry Miranda – Shooting Guard, Allen Paul Virtudazo – Forward

Additions: Rodan Reducto (Rookie)– Forward, John Marco Tayontong (Rookie) - Guard
Ralph Crysler Salcedo (Rookie) – Forward, Erwin Catapang (Rookie) – Center, Mark Russel Dimla (Rookie) – Guard

Background: The Chiefs are entering Season 85 with a lot of enthusiasm. Their much publicized echoing intentions of joining the league has finally been answered. Now that their here, can they handle the limelight of playing in the oldest collegiate league in the land? The answer is just days away.

Key Changes: Arellano will be without two of their most valuable assets in multi faceted swingman Orlando Daroya and utility man Joudan Melano. Interesting note though, the Chiefs will be parading probably on record, the smallest point guard to play in the NCAA, 5′1 Leonard Anquilo. Jerome Agustin will start as led point guard while Allen Paul Virtudazo can easily switch from small forward to two-guard depending on need when the smaller but speedy Anquilo is on the floor. Veteran Adrian Celada will be their primary scorer to compliment the Ciria Cruz’s – Gio and Isaiah in the shaded area while Center Ed Rivera will come off the bench for relief duties.

Outlook: It is Junji Ablan’s rookie year as head coach. Athletic Director and former head coach Leo Isaac made sure that he left the Chiefs in capable hands by appointing his former deputy from his coaching days with the Cardinals. With almost half the roster filled with fresh manpower, expect the Chiefs to struggle but will make life miserable for some teams in the league.

Prognosis: If they play up to their potential and put their money were their mouth is, Arellano can do some damage if the others start to take them for granted and not pay attention, after all, a badge that says back to back champions is a rarity in any league. They came into the NCAA a winner and the Chiefs will surely come out every game to prove a point.

                              Angeles University Foundation Great Danes

                              Head Coach: Eric Gascon

Projected Starting Five: Dian Paulo Henson – 5′7 Point Guard, Aaron Santos – 6′1 Shooting Guard, Limmuel Moises Manarang – 6′2 Small Forward, Matthew Gray Carney – 6′4 Power Forward, Tristan Perez, Small Gerard Gigante – 6′4 Center

Off the Bench: 6′2 Jethron Dumlao, 6′3 Guian Arnell Fuertez, 5′7 Patrick Musni

Others: Donald Kenneth Calma, 6′4 Jon Cayanan, Chucky Gomez, 6′3 Rowell Maniago, Tristan Perez, Ralph Nacu, Kevin Frederick Sazon.

Another proven winner with a National Students Basketball Championship under its belt, the Great Danes are another addition in the NCAA’s long search to fill the last remaining slot in the league.

There are two players to watch for in the Great Danes line up namely, Filipino American Forward Matthew Carney and exciting and athletic utility man Aaron Santos. Questions arise on how the Great Danes will perform is a much bigger stage. But if they’re looking for a challenge, they really came to the right place to strut their stuff.

                              Projections:

                              1. Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers
                              2. San Sebastian College Recoletos Golden Stags
                              3. San Beda College Red Lions
                              4. Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights
                              5. College of St. Benilde Blazers
                              6. Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals
                              7. University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Altas
                              8. Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals
                              9. Arellano University Chiefs
                              10. Angeles University Foundation Great Danes

Finals: Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers vs. San Beda Red Lions

Champion: Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers
VICTORY needs no explanation, DEFEAT allows none
