Fourth-Seeded Marymount Men's Basketball Upsets St. Mary's In OT; Saints Face Wesley In Saturday's Title Game
Marymount's Chapmen Canady drained a three-pointer as time ran out in regulation to force overtime, then the Saints scored the last six points in overtime to pull off the 86-81 win at St. Mary's and earn a berth in the 2009 CAC title game at Wesley Saturday at 2 p.m.

Marymount (15-12) which finished fourth in the regular season, battled back from a 13-point deficit midway through the second half to earn a berth in the CAC title game against the second-seeded Wesley (17-9), which held off third-seeded Mary Washington by a 98-79 margin.

The 2009 CAC title game in Dover, Del., will tip off at 2 p.m. Saturday (2/28). In just its second season as a member of the CAC, Wesley will be vying for its first conference championship. Marymount will try to win its third title, with the previous crowns captured in 1992 and 2000.

Tarek Ammoury paced Marymount with a game-high 24 points while Ronnie Barbour (14), Elvis Ellis (12) and Patrick Prewitt (10) also contributed in double figures.

Alex Franz led four SMC (21-5) players into double figures, finished with team-highs of 23 points and six assists. Alex Irmer chipped in a double-double with 16 scores and 12 rebounds while Camontae Griffin and Calvin Wise each totaled 14 points.

Marymount held a 30-29 lead at the break, but St. Mary's quickly took control in the second half and built a double-digit advantage. SMC's lead peaked at 13 points (56-43) on a Wise layup with 11:23 left in the game.

The Saints put together a 19-8 run over the next five minutes, finally taking a 62-61 lead on a Barbour three-point shot with 6:23 left in regulation. Neither team could gain more than a one-point advantage the rest of the way until Franz hit a three-point shot with eight seconds left, giving the hosts a 73-70 lead. After three time outs, Canady's bomb at the buzzer sent the teams to an extra five minutes.

In OT, Marymount took the lead three times before SMC battled back to tie the score. The Seahawks finally took their only lead of overtime (81-80) on a Wise free throw with 1:33 left.

A minute later, after two offensive rebounds, Ellis scored an inside hoop to start a six-point run over the final 32 seconds to clinch the victory. It was the Saints' first win in three tries this season against St. Mary's, which is the top-ranked team in the Middle Atlantic Region.

In the other semifinal at Wesley, senior guard Rashawn Johnson fired home a game-high 29 points, including eight three-point goals, and led four Wolverines into double figures to lead the hosts to the 19-point victory. Evan Martin (19), Sean McAndrew (11) and James Stratton (10) also contributed for Wesley.

Brandon Altmann posted a double-double to lead Mary Washington, finishing with 23 points and 12 caroms. Matt Hale (14), Matt Storus (12) and Kiernan Whitworth (10) also hit double digits for the Eagles.

Wesley took a 43-36 lead to the halftime break, but Altmann cut the gap to one point (55-54) with a layup with 14:49 left in regulation. Wesley answered with a Stratton three-point goal, which ignited a 15-2 run. A Rudy Thomas layup with 11:48 left gave WC a 69-56 advantage. UMW closed to within eight points once, but Wesley led by double digits for the final nine minutes of the game.

Marymount Knocks Off Seahawks in OT in CAC Semifinals

St. Mary's City, Md. - Third time was the charm as the fourth-seeded Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team closed out the first overtime period on a 6-1 run over a 2:02-minute span to knock off the defending Capital Athletic Conference champions, St. Mary's College of Maryland, 86-81, in the CAC semifinals Thursday night.

Marymount (15-12) now advance to Saturday's CAC championship game at second-seeded Wesley College, who was a 98-79 winner over No. 3 seed University of Mary Washington in tonight's other semifinal match-up. The Saints have twice won the conference championship title (1992 and 2000), while Wesley will be making their first-ever trip to the title game in just its second year in the CAC.

With 11:23 left in the contest, the visitors found themselves staring at a 13-point deficit. Marymount erased the deficit with a five-minute, 19-5 run to claim a 62-61 lead. From there, the two teams traded baskets and were tied for the sixth time at 70-all with 1:01 on the clock. The heroics then started as sophomore guard Alex Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) nailed a three-pointer to put the Seahawks up 73-70 with eight ticks left in the game. However, sophomore guard Chapmen Canady (Lorton, Va./Hayfield), who missed the potential game-winning free throw on January 31, fired off a three of his own at the buzzer to send it into overtime.

During their regular season match-ups, top-seeded St. Mary's (21-5) had notched a 76-67 home court victory on December 6 and a 77-71 overtime road win on January 31. The Saints' win tonight halted St. Mary's home game win streak at 15 games as the Seahawks had not lost at home since a 72-70 loss to Marymount back on January 30, 2008.

Marymount's freshman forward Tarek Ammoury (McLean, Va./McLean) led all scorers with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Juniors Ronnie Barbour (Upper Marlboro, Md./F. Douglass) and Elvis Ellis (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) combined for 26 points off the bench, while junior guard Patrick Prewitt (Mitchellville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) added 10.

The Saints edged St. Mary's, 30-29, at halftime as Marymount shot 52.2 percent from the floor, while limiting the Seahawks to 38.5 percent, including 1-of-8 threes. Prewitt led all scorers with 10 first-half points, while junior guard Camontae Griffin (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) paced the home team with seven.

Franz matched his career-high of 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting and tallied a game-best six helpers, while senior center Alex Irmer (Alexandria, Va./Wakefield) registered a double-double on 16 points (just two points shy of notching his 1,000th career point) and 12 boards. Griffin and senior forward Calvin Wise (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall) both ended the night with 14 points.

The No. 1 team in the latest NCAA Middle Atlantic regional rankings, St. Mary's fate now rests in the hands of the NCAA selection committee. The 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament bids will be announced Monday, March 2 starting at 11:00 a.m. at

Wesley's 16-Point Second-Half Surge Leads To 64-51 Win Over Marymount In 2009 CAC Men's Basketball Championship Game
Second-seeded Wesley College broke open a back-and-forth contest with a 16-0 run over four minutes midway through the second half on the way to a 64-51 victory over fourth-seeded Marymount to win the 2009 CAC Men's Basketball Championship.

The Wolverines (18-9), in just their second season in the conference, earned the automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Tournament behind the 15-point performance of guard Alphonso Wright. Rudy Thomas came off the bench to add 14 points in 17 minutes while James Stratton chipped in 12 markers.

Marymount (15-13), which upended top-seeded St. Mary's in Thursday's semifinal round, was led by Tarek Ammoury, who finished with a game-high 17 points. Patrick Prewitt also reached double-digits in the scoring column with 10 points while Rockwell Moody gathered in a game-high 10 rebounds.

The game was a tale of two halves as Marymount shot 54.2% (13-for-24), including 3-for-4 from long range while Wesley knocked down just 24.2% (8-for-33), including just 2-for-16 from three-point land in the opening 20 minutes.

In the second half, the Saints' shooting dipped to just 30% from the field (9-for-30), including misses on all six three-point shots. Wesley, meanwhile, rebounded with a 48.4 shooting performance in the last 20 minutes, hitting half of its 14 treys in the process.

Marymount also had 19 total turnovers, including 11 in the second half, while Wesley had just 13 miscues, including five in the final 20 minutes.

Prewitt did all of his scoring in the first half as Marymount took a 31-21 lead to the break. Wesley bounced back quickly, scoring the first eight points of the second frame before an Ammoury free throw stopped the run and gave the Saints a 32-29 lead with 16:38 remaining.

The teams traded hoops over the next seven minutes before a Sam Sentz layup with 9:08 left gave Marymount a 42-40 advantage -- the Saints' last lead of the game.

Thomas knocked down the first of consecutive three-pointers with 8:55 left to ignite Wesley's 16-point surge. Stratton followed with a trey, and Thomas drained another long-range shot - his third in less than two minutes - to give the Wolverines a 52-42 lead. Marymount never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
