The bigmen of UE are not that big or hefty so I expect a double-team on Slaughter or a zone defense. But the real challenge would be on the point guard of UV if he would be able to get the ball to Greg since he must get pass the press which UE is noted for. If he cannot get the ball to Slaughter then the height factor is neutralized.

        AU Chiefs have arrived
        By Joey Villar
        Friday, November 7, 2008

Three-time Fr. Martin Cup champion Arellano U showed its readiness to join the NCAA as it stunned 2006 UAAP champion Santo Tomas, 69-59, yesterday to barge into the “Sweet 16” of the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the Makati Coliseum.

Orlando Daroya, priming up for his PBL debut for Pharex tomorrow, dished out a double-double performance of 32 points and 10 rebounds while coming up with five steals to power the Chiefs to the big win and a clash with UCAA champion Universal College of Nursing in the main draw.

“I guess teams will start to take notice of us now,” said Arellano coach Leo Isaac, who made a record of sort after he became the first mentor to steer two teams in the Sweet 16 after leading Mapua into the tournament proper the other day.

University of the East and Lyceum likewise advanced to the next phase by routing St. Clare, 108-80, and University of Nueva Caceres-Naga City, 81-60, respectively.

The Warriors arranged a showdown with the 6-9 George Slaughter-led Cebu champion University of Visayas while the Pirates will meet reigning UAAP titlist Ateneo.

The Chiefs, also the back-to-back NCRAA champions bidding to take Phil. Christian U’s slot in the NCAA next season, dominated the Tigers as they led from start to finish to boot out the fancied España-based squad, which missed the services of injured Jervy Cruz and Japs Cuan.

Arellano employed a man-to-man full-court trapping defense to scuttle UST and sustained aggressive offensive game throughout the contest.

Dylan Ababou, a PBL star playing for Magnolia Purewater, scored 22 points for UST.

The tournament is staking P500,000, P200,000 and P150,000 for the first to third placers in scholarship grants, courtesy of Smart, PLDT, KFC, Flying V, Fil-Oil and The STAR and another P500,000, P200,000 and P150,000 in cash courtesy of telecommunication boss Manny V. Pangilinan.

          • Arellano stuns UST, gains ‘16’
            UE, Lyceum also advance
            By JONAS TERRADO

            Friday, November 7, 2008

Arellano University surprised University of Santo Tomas, 69-59, yesterday to barge into the “Sweet 16” of the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Championship at the Makati Coliseum.

Orlando Daroya, who will play for Pharex in the PBL, sizzled with 32 points, 10 rebounds and five steals for the two-time defending NCRAA champions and Father Martin Cup Division II winners Chiefs.

The Legarda-based cagers, one of several schools knocking at the NCAA door, will meet UCAA champion Universal College of Nursing in the next round which starts on Nov. 24.

Arellano’s victory paved the way for coach Leo Isaac to have two squads in the "Sweet 16." Isaac also coaches the Mapua Cardinals who gained entry earlier.

"Here in Arellano, we have always been a competitive team, madami na ding pinagdaanan ito," Isaac said. "We’re glad that we will be able to play in the next phase of this tournament."

The Chiefs also drew 10 points from guard Jordan Amiel Melano as they led by as 15 points, 56-41, with 6:36 remaining.

UST scored eight straight points in a span of one minute to reduce the margin to 49-56, but several misses and numerous turnovers enabled the Chiefs to claim the victory.

Dylan Ababou was the lone double-digit scorer for the Growling Tigers with 22 points. Francis Allera and Chester Taylor each scored eight markers.Earlier, Universitty of the East crushed NAASCU fourth placer St Clare College of Caloocan, 108-80, behind the 19 points of Lucas Tagarda and 16 of Paul Zamar to similarly reach the "Sweet 16."

The Warriors will face CESAFI champion University of the Visayas, which will be led by Fil-Am standout Greg Slaughter. The 6-11 big man recently won the Most Valuable Player plum as the Green Lancers won its eights straight crown.

Lyceum also made it to the last 16 for the second straight year but will be in for a difficult task against UAAP champion Ateneo de Manila after Pirates mentor Bonnie Tan picked the paper containing the Blue Eagles’ name in the draw.

The winner of this tournament sponsored by PLDT, Smart, Filoil Flying V and KFC will take home the P500,000 top prize plus a chance to represent the country in next year’s Universiade in Serbia.

Meanwhile, the Visayas inter-zonal phase will begin this Sunday at the Ormoc City Superdome with NCAA’s Letran joining University of San Jose-Recoletos and University of Cebu of CESAFI, West Negros University of NOPSSSCEA, BIT International College and AMA Computer Learning Center from Ormoc.

with regards to UV vs UE, i think UE will have a slight edge. plus, UE has shown it is a better team when playing in the offseasons.

UE has no marcy or thiele in this PCCL?
In UST's previous games in the zonals, they didn't even wear their regular UAAP uniforms and Pido Jarencio wasn't around.

Red Warriors, Chiefs, Pirates on their way to PCC Sweet 16
                by Josef Ramos

Respect. The three-time NCRAA champs and current Father Martin Cup holders earned this, and everybody’s attention by beating heavily favored University of Santo Tomas, while University of the East and Lyceum-Manila also advanced to the ‘Sweet 16’ of the Philippine Collegiate Championship last November 6, 2008 at the Makati Coliseum.

Lyceum College of the Philippines (81) vs University of Nueva Caceres (60)

The Lyceum Pirates had 11 three-pointers and converted 14 of 18 shots from the foul line as they took the Bicolanos to school.

Guard Eiguio Abrahim delivered 25 points, while Reggie Rimando and Joseph Abaya chipped in with 13 and 12 points respectively. Shooter Fritz Ong added 10 points for the Pirates. UNC committed 30 errors due to the defensive intensity of the Pirates.

After a 17-11 lead in first quarter, the Pirates’ running game and stifling defense earned them a 47-23 spread by halftime. The Greyhounds remained clueless as to what hit them throughout the 2nd half.

Marlon Casaldon carried the fight for Nueva Caceres with 17 points.

Lyceum will face UAAP Season 71 champs Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles in the ‘Sweet 16.’

University of the East (108) vs Saint Clare (80)

Defense served as the Red Warriors’ calling card.

UE delivered a crushing blow to the Saints after whipping the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals on opening day by garnering a tournament-high 25 steals, nine of which were accounted for by guard Lucas Tagarda. St. Clare, for its part, committed 32 turnovers.

Offensively, the Red Warriors were blazing hot as they made 37 of 86 attempts from the field and converted 31-of-41 shots from the free throw line. The Red Warriors also outrebounded the Saints, 53-39.

Tagarda had 19 points, while Paul Zamar chipped in for 16 points. James Martinez also added 11 points for UE. The Red Warriors had a 23-15 first quarter lead and a 44-28 edge at halftime.

The Red Warriors will battle the University of Visayas Green Lancers in the ‘Sweet 16’ of the PCC.

Arellano University (69) vs University of Santo Tomas (59)

Orlando Daroya put on an all-around display that served to compound his opponents’ woes all-season long. The 6-foot-3 swingman was a man possessed as he tallied a tournament-high 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pilot the Chiefs to the ‘Sweet 16′ and an upset of University of Santo Tomas

With UST struggling from beyond the arc after posting an 0-of-15 clip, Arellano was scoring at will on its way to an encounter with UCAA titlists Univeral College of Nursing Dragons.

The Chiefs took advantage of UST’s mental lapses by scoring 27 turnover points off of 22 Tiger TOs.

Arellano started the game on a high note by registering a 21-15 first quarter lead.

The Chiefs managed to control their double-digit margin until the the end of the 3rd quarter. The Growling Tigers then ignited a fourth quarter to narrow the gap, 51-57, with 5:02 minutes left in regulation.

Daroya’s eight straight points in the final three-minute mark sealed the win for Arellano. Jordan Melano contributed 10 points for the Chiefs, who managed to tally 16 assists and 19 steals.

“Our entry into the Sweet 16 is a way of saying that this school needs to be recognized after winning the NCRAA title twice,” said Arellano coach Leo Isaac.

Mapua is bracketed with Ateneo and JRU.
Arellano is bracketed with San Beda and La Salle.

If in case Mapua and Arellano meet, it would be in the Finals.

This is a stupid schedule. they should have just taken out those last 2 days and moved the last 2 games of Nov 10 into Nov 11. BIT IC will be playing a game with less than 6 hours rest, UC also plays 2 games in 1 day and both teams are playing opponents that are not patsies.

Probably has something to do with the budget. It did happen with our RP Youth team this year wherein they ended up playing two games within the same day on one of their schedules. But I agree, they could've just added one more day of competitions, and it would've been better for all schools.

                              • where would I go if I want to watch the games? What/where are the venues?
