Former champion University of the East starts its bid for a spot in the FilOil Flying V “Sweet 16” Final Challenge as the Warriors clash with the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) side today in the zonal phase of the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Championship games.

The Warriors, who won the national title two years ago but failed to defend it last year, battle the Generals, a wildcard qualifier, in the 2 p.m. main game.

Fr. Martin Cup champion Arellano University, meanwhile, takes on Region 1 titlist St. Louie University at 10 a.m. while NCAA-South runner-up Lyceum of Batangas tangles with Luzon University at 12 noon.

Three regional champions and nine qualifiers from Metro-Manila leagues are competing for finals slots.

The teams are divided into four groups with Group A composed of Mapua, Lyceum-Batangas and University of Luzon. Arellano University; St. Louis University and University of Santo Tomas make up Group B while Group C includes Lyceum-Manila, Don Bosco-Mandaluyong and University of Nueva Caceres. UE, EAC and St. Clare are in Group D.

The top team in each group will join Ateneo, San Beda, De La Salle, Jose Rizal University, San Sebastian-Cavite, University of Visayas, MLQU and UCN in the elite “Sweet 16”.

Rey Gamboa, Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) chairman, said that admission is free to all the zonal games at Makati Coliseum starting today up to Nov. 6.

This is in line with the PCCL’s objective of providing the students and collegiate basketball fans the opportunity to watch their alma mater teams compete with the best teams coming from the different regions nationwide.

Gamboa also announced that there is an ongoing survey as to the top choices for the remaining eight slots in the “Sweet 16”.

Interested fans may log in at www.CollegiateChampionsLeague.net and submit your choices of teams that will advance to the FilOil Flying V “Sweet 16” Final Challenge. Those with most number of correct choices will receive surprise gifts from the sponsors.

    • Sharp UE overpowers EAC, shoo-in for PCCL 'Sweet 16'
      11/03/2008 | 05:34 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Pari Llagas scored 23 points and the University of the East Red Warriors used a late scoring binge to rout the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals 92-74 in the Luzon zonals of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League basketball tournament Monday at the Makati Coliseum.

The Warriors didn't trail in the match but they were up by only 73-69 at the 6:11 mark of the fourth. UE launched a 19-5 scoring blitz to pound the Generals into submission.

The Luzon zonals are divided into four groups with UE, EAC and Saint Clare bunched in Zone 2-Group B.

Other groups include: University of Luzon, Mapua and Lyceum-Batangas in Zone 1-Group A; Santo Tomas U, Saint Louis (Baguio) and Arellano in Zone 1-Group B; and Don Bosco Mandaluyong, University of Nueva Caceres (Naga) and Lyceum (Manila) in Zone 2-Group A.

The teams which come out on top in each of the four groups advance to the PCCL Sweet 16 slated next month.

In other games, Arellano, the National Capital Region Athletic Association champion, made short work of Saint Louis University 82-36 while University of Luzon defeated Lyceum-Batangas 79-62.

Orlando Daroya led Arellano with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Norman Ilao's 21 points and 14 rebounds paced Luzon U.

"We have a difficult time playing EAC because we're basically the same size," said UE coach Dindo Pumaren, whose Warriors need to beat Saint Clare in their next game to advance.

James Martinez, whose back-to-back three-pointers made it 80-69 in favor of UE with 3:53 to go, finished with 19 points, four assists and three steals.

Elmer Espiritu added 13 points, three steals and two blocks for the Warriors, who missed big man Hans Thiele (fractured right foot).

Eight teams have already been seeded into the "Sweet 16", led by University Athletic Association of the Philippines finalists Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle and National Collegiate Athletic Association finalists San Beda and Jose Rizal University.

San Sebastian-Cavite, the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities champion, Manuel L. Quezon U (Colleges and Universities Sports Association), Universal College of Nursing (Universities and Colleges Athletic Association) and University of Visayas (Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc.) were also given automatic berths in the PCCL final tournament.

Besides the four teams which will advance from the Luzon zonals, two teams each from the Visayas and Mindanao legs will earn slots in the "Sweet 16".

          • Mapua, Don Bosco near round of 16
            By JONAS TERRADO

            http://www.mb.com.ph/SPRT20081105139927.html

Mapua and Don Bosco Technical College opened their respective campaign on a high note by scoring contrasting wins yesterday in the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Championship zonal tournament at the Makati Coliseum.

The Cardinals put up a dominating show to demolish Lyceum of Batangas, 104-58, while the NCAA South champion Greywolves defeated Naga City’s University of Nueva Caceres, 73-64, as both teams moved within a victory of entering the Sweet 16.

Emilio Aguinaldo College, whose head coach Nomar Isla resigned recently, outlasted NAASCU fourth-placer St. Clare College of Caloocan, 65-62, behind three consecutive free-throws by Alain Musni.

Sophomore Jonathan Banal led Mapua with 18 points while NCAA Rookie of the Year winner Allan Mangahas added 17 in a mighty show of power.

The Cardinals battle University of Luzon at 2 p.m. today for a spot in the next phase of the event sponsored by PLDT, Smart, Filoil Flying-V and KFC.

The Patriots, runners-up in the NCAA South, ended their campaign without a win in two games.

Bjorn Andrei Casibang topscored for Don Bosco with 18 points while Robbie Cruz added 12 markers as the Mandaluyong-based cagers pulled away from a slim 52-49 lead in the third quarter.

Don Bosco, however, will have to beat Lyceum of the Philippines in today’s first game at 10 a.m. in order to advance.

The Generals, runners-up in the UCAA tilt, won despite Isla’s resignation last Monday.

Isla resigned after his Cameroonian big man Emmanuel Mbe was plucked away by 2006 UAAP champion University of Santo Tomas.

Isla, irked with the sudden move, quit as coach but kept his position as the school’s athletic director.

"Even though kare-resign lang ni coach, swerte pa din kami," said new EAC head coach Gino Manuel. "We made some adjustments in our defense in the last few minutes that helped us get this victory.

EAC drew 17 points from Ace Quiambao and 14 from Romeo Fotue as they overcame a 62-54 deficit with 3:49 remaining off a three-point play by St. Clare guard Mac Opalia.

A drive by Argel Mendoza tied the game at 62-62 before Musni made three of four foul shots in the homestretch.

            • Mapua cagers rout Luzon U, book 'Sweet 16' berth in PCCL
              11/05/2008 | 07:09 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Mapua entered the Philippine Collegiate Champions League "Sweet 16" basketball tournament after the Cardinals defeated University of Luzon 77-59 in a Luzon zonals game Wednesday at the Makati Coliseum.

TG Guillermo scored 18 points to lead Mapua, which lost in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament last September.

"This was a nice win for us," Mapua coach Leo Isaac said. "We regrouped 10 days before the zonals because we wanted to do well here."

Based on the seedings, Mapua will face Manuel L. Quezon University in the PCCL Sweet 16 patterned after the US NCAA Division One.

In the other games, University of Santo Tomas downed Saint Louis University 102-52 and Lyceum-Manila tripped Don Bosco 87-79.

Four UST players scored 11 points in the rout. The Tigers will formalize their entry into the next round with a win over Arellano Thursday.

Joseph Abaya tallied 23 points for Lyceum, which needs to beat Nueva Caceres (Naga) in its last assignment to advance.

The Luzon zonals are divided into four groups with University of the East, Emilio Aguinaldo College and Saint Clare bunched in Zone 2-Group B.

UE (1-0) will get a berth in the Sweet 16 if the Warriors win over Saint Clare.

Eight teams have already been seeded into the "Sweet 16", led by University Athletic Association of the Philippines finalists Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle and National Collegiate Athletic Association finalists San Beda and Jose Rizal University.

This good for the total development of Philippine Basketball. Having more teams competitive outside the UAAP and NCAA would make the players think twice if it is wise to be a benchwarmer or a Team B member of a UAAP or NCAA school or go to another school with a good basketball program outside the said two leagues. Do hope the domino effect happens, thus now it's a competitive team then soon a more competitive league. This would be good as more players would have more good teams to go to.

                            • * I still cannot believe the AU Chiefs could be the UST Tigers in a relatively big tournament like the PCCL. Reminds me of "Glory Road"

                              * Tough luck UV has got to face a 2008 UAAP Final Four team in the UE Warriors. The 6'11" Greg Slaughter will be tested by UE's frontline of Pari Llagas and Elmer Espiritu. Even IF they do get around UE, then they will likely have to face DLSU.

did jervy play? i read from gameface that UST never led and that AU's bigman dominated UST's...

is this the case of UST not taking this game seriously?

with regards to UV vs UE, i think UE will have a slight edge. plus, UE has shown it is a better team when playing in the offseasons.

UE has no marcy or thiele in this PCCL?
