UC unsure to send center Fajardo to Black
THE University of Cebu Webmasters have received word from Norman Black for the inclusion of its prized center Junemar Fajardo in an All-Collegiate Men’s basketball team that will be sent to a mission to win the Southeast Asian (Sea) Games title in December.
UC coach Roehl Gomez told Sun.Star-Cebu that Black approached him for the services of Fajardo during their meeting in Bacolod City.
“Coach Black had approached me and asked me if we (UC) can lend Abay (Fajardo) for the Seaba and Sea Games campaigns,” Gomez confirmed.
Task
Black was tasked by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to organize and mentor the Seaba and Sea Games-bound All-Collegiate squad.
With lieutenants Glen Capacio, Jamike Jarim and Sandy Arespacochaga, they held a series of tryouts by invitation to form the squad before it will be formally launched his month.
Fajardo, who was chosen as the Best Collegiate Player of the Year by the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL), was a hands-down choice to be included in the young men’s squad.
“We can’t commit yet because we have other plans for Fajardo and besides, we wanted some assurance for him. Atty. (Baldomero) Estenzo (UC team manager) and I are looking for the right Big Man’s camp for him to train in the US. That is the most we can do for his loyalty to the school. Equip him for his future,” added Gomez.
Picks
Aside from Fajardo, Black’s personal pick to lead the RP team who will compete for the basketball gold medal in the biennial games in December in Indonesia is Smart-Gilas team captain Chris Tiu.
And with his teammates at the Philippine Men’s squad Greg Slaughter and Aldrech Ramos, who Black invited to join the tryouts, Tiu is set to captain a very young team that includes Ateneo’s Nico Salva, San Beda’s Garvo Lanete, San Sebastian’s Calvin Abueva, high school standouts Kiefer Ravena of Ateneo and San Beda’s Baser Amer, University of the East’s Paul Lee, Adamson’s Alex Nuyles, La Salle’s Simon Atkins and National U’s Ray Parks.

Add to the fact that they'll do this under the watchful eyes of Norman Black.
So, yep, UC's actions are understandable

CEBU, Philippines - On the night when star center Junemar Fajardo suffered one of his worst showing in his career, the smallest player on the floor gamely rose to the occasion with 5-foot-6 shooting guard Gerald Ampoon rallying Gaisano Capital past Ave Maria Sanctuary Park, 72-68, in the 5th CESAFI Partners’ Cup last Tuesday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Games today
(Cebu Coliseum)
5:30 pm Winner Beef Loaf vs. Ave Maria
7 pm Lion Tiger vs. Prime Asia
Earlier, the San Marino Corned Tuna escaped with a 65-62 win in overtime against Rose Aquarius Merchandising.
With Fajardo handcuffed to a measly three points, Ave Maria took advantage of his ignorable presence and was poised to pull a major upset when they opened an 11-point lead, 44-33, with still 7:24 left in the third period.
However, Ave Maria's control of the match was shortlived when Gaisano Capital, bannered by the UC Webmasters, ended the period with a 17-4 blitz to regain the upperhand, 50-48, on a triple by Archie Batua.
Still, Ave Maria was very much alive with just a two-point deficit, 54-56, on a basket by Abulaiz Suliman, but Gaisano Capital simply saved their best shots for last. And despite many others deserved to be called heroes, it was Ampoon who emerged as the brightest, scoring 12 points as Gaisano Capital took the temporary lead with a clean 2-0 slate.
Quinton Brian Heruela, Robinson Mohammad and Edward Pao also made significant contributions in offense late in the final period.
Jason Nudalo nailed 16 markers for Ave Maria, which fell to 1-1.
