I watch Game 2 of the NCAA Jrs. Championship between Letran and San Sebastian and that Ryan Buenafe Kid literally destroyed the competition. He already have a collegiate type of body and i expect him to improve more on his defense. He is by far the most impressive HS player that i have seen in quite sometime.

It seems there is a renaissance of some sort coming to Philippine basketball in the next couple of years. Guys like Ryan Buenafe, Justin Chua & Nico Salva are playing magnificent ball in the High School competitions.

The problem w/ Bringas, I think is because he reportedly already 19 years old. A 19 year old High School Senior? Not very impressive.

Ryan Buenafe, named league and finals MVP, scored 37 points while Arvie Bringas chipped in 24 points on top of 23 rebounds as the Staglets captured their third straight title.

“Ito na siguro ‘yung pina-kamasarap na panalo namin. Three straight years na kaming namamayagpag and we are hoping to extend it next season. Sana makaapat,” said coach Raymond Valenzona after the Staglets duplicated the Red Cubs’ three consecutive titles from 2002 to 2004 under coach Ato Badolato.
The Manila Times is one of the leading national broadsheets in the Philippines. It is also one of the oldest, having been founded in 1898.

I think Arvie Bringas is only 17 or 18 yrs.old because the rule in the NCAA Juniors division is when you are 19 yrs.old and above you are disqualified from playing in their tournament. I just hope that their respective coaches in college will give them enough playing time and exposure. They really need to watch their progress and train them to become future members of our RP National Youth team.

ryan buenafe is impressive because he's big and can dribble the ball very well. if he can improve his quickness and speed, he can be a good number 2 or 3 in US NCAA Div1. for now, he needs a good training to toughen his upper body and muscles because he looks like having so much fats in his system.

                  Zobel Secures Crown In OT

                  by JP Abcede

De La Salle Zobel achieved something many believed they could not do, defeating Ateneo High School in overtime, 98-92, to sweep the finals and grasp the UAAP juniors basketball trophy on September 29 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Jed Manguera tied the count, 82-all, with a three-point basket, finding himself free at left quarter-court, with just exactly two seconds left, the pass coming from Marco Fortuna. The Junior Archers then stringed a 7-0 run, finished by a Joshua Webb putback of his own miss plus a foul from Juami Tiongson to boot, 93-86, 1:58.

“We were down and out,” explained DLSZ coach Boris Aldeguer. “The boys refused to give up.”

The diminutive Fortuna played huge with 23 points, shooting 5/9 from beyond the three-point line, six rebounds, and five assists. Webb, who already had a double-double by halftime, concluded his UAAP juniors ball career shooting 50% at the field and 9/11 at the line for 21 markers, 21 boards, two steals, and two blocks.

“He stuck with us for four years,” Aldeguer said of his graduating forward. “Three years, two championships. He is the MVP, what can I say?”

“It is complete bliss,” Webb pictured out his feeling. “It was such a close game. It came down the wire, we almost lost this one.”

Gwayne Capacio, son of Far Eastern University men’s basketball coach Glenn Capacio, concocted 15 points and eight rebounds. Both Manguera and Nico Elorde produced 12, while Masshi Okubo concluded with 11 markers.

“This game was more of vindication,” Aldeguer cited three things, which were: the Junior Archers not being able to defend the title due to last year’s suspension, losing twice against the Eaglets in the eliminations, and the thought that they could not win another crown.

De La Salle have nine graduating players, among them are Manguera, Fortuna, Okubo, the heralded Webb, Archi Go, and the bulky Colin Buckley.

“(DLSU) coach Franz (Pumaren) is very interested with the seniors,” Aldeguer mentioned. “I am glad because this is their dream, to play in college.”

“If I can crack into the lineup,” Webb crossed his fingers of a chance to be part of the Green Archers. “It is already a competitive lineup.”

Tiongson fouled out with 24 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and eight turnovers on 33 minutes. First year Kiefer Ravena exploded for 22 with five boards, two steals, and two blocks, while Ael Banal made 17.

Unlike in their previous encounters, Zobel led for most of the match, the highest after two Fortuna threes sandwiched an Okubo jumper at the corner to begin the second half, 44-37. The Eaglets also had a seven-point lead early in the second quarter.

The shooters of Ateneo fought back and turned it into a six-point contest, 79-73, with Ravena scoring an acrobatic layup in transition against Manguera, 2:11 in the fourth period. DLSZ returned fire with five straight, Capacio stealing the ball from Banal, who fumbled the inbounds pass, then forwarding it to Go for a layup, time down to :24.7.

Three Tiongson free tries and a Capacio charity set up the final play as Webb grabbed the rebound off Tiongson’s missed freethrow, brought down the ball to Fortuna, who then drove left then kicked it out to Manguera at the wings.

“Siguro swerte lang talaga. Hinintay ko lang dumating ang shots,” Manguera recounted. “Pick and roll talaga ang play, pero nalibre ako.”

                    Kieffer Ravena
                    - Only a High School freshman as of 2007, but already a major force in his school varsity team
                    - Doesn't have his father's height or heft, yet, but already a much better ballhandler
                    - Good outside shot, great one on one moves facing the basket
                    - If he grows to be his father's size while retaining his current skills & quickness, could be a major, major force in Philippine basketball

                    Matthew Capacio
                    - Good height (reportedly 6'4"), good ballhandling & one on one skills
                    - Lacks athleticism, though, not as great as leaper as Joshua Webb

                    Ael Banal
                    - Good outside shot
                    - Looks a bit young, & small also in terms of height

IGEE KING. Both the given name and surname are familiar.

The 15-year-old boy standing at 6-foot-1 happens to be the son of former cage great Abe King, whom he named after his former team manager at Great Taste and Presto, Ignacio ‘Iggy’ Gotao.

“Bata pa, pero he’s improving,” said King, the former Toyota Corolla resident power forward who flew to town Saturday night from Washington D.C. and made a special personal appearance in the PSA Forum yesterday at the Shakey’s United Nations Avenue branch.

The young King is currently playing for the Gig Harbor High School in Seattle, and was part of the 8th grade team that recently won the Hoopin’ for Life basketball tournament in the US.

Abe, now 50 but whose presence remains noticeable with his height and stocky build, also dreams to see his son play in college " and hopefully pro ball " in the Philippines, although he stressed studies should remain his priority.

After playing for San Beda during his college years, King turned pro and suited up for Toyota, Great Taste and Purefoods, rising to become one of the best power forwards in the history of the PBA.

Not to demean the kind of talent in the league today, but King believes he can hold a candle to pro players of today if he’s at the prime of his career.

In between laughs, he said, “magiging mayabang ako nito. Pero kung inabot ko ang basketball ngayon na ganyan kalinis, palagay ko makakalamang ako ng maraming beses.”

“Tingnan ninyo nga ang mukha ko ngayon, mukhang boksingero na,” he said, pointing to the cuts and bruises in his face that had been the result of the long, tedious 18 years he spent in the PBA from 1977.

A one-time Mythical team member known for his rebounding and defensive prowess, King once scored 60 points for the Tamaraws in 1979.

King retired in 1995 after winning a championship with Purefoods, an experience which he considers as very, very painful. “Mahal ko kasi ang PBA,” he said

Paras Son Shines in Batang PBA

                              Updated May 09, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines – Kobe Paras accounted for all but seven of his team’s points in the first quarter as Batang Alaska-Quezon City pounced on Batang Coca-Cola-San Pedro, 81-24, on Thursday and moved within a win of sweeping its group elimination in the Coca-Cola Batang PBA Summer League.

Kobe, son of former PBA star and comedian Benjie Paras, scored 15 of his 17 points in the opening period, propelling the Batang Aces to a 22-6 lead that was never threatened the rest of the way.

Martin Mendoza took scoring honors with 20 points and Kenneth Guevarra had nine for the Batang Aces, who streaked to their third straight win in Group B at the Olivarez College Gym in Parañaque.

Batang Coca-Cola-San Pedro fell to 2-2.

Batang Sta. Lucia-Cainta pulled through with a 30-28 decision over Batang Barangay Ginebra-Pasay, also on Thursday to improve to 1-1 in Group A.

Randolf Perez scored 10 points and Dominic de Lara added nine for the Batang Realtors. Joseph Navarro had 11 points for Pasay which picked up its second loss in a row.

On Wednesday, Batang Barako Bull-Marikina clobbered Batang San Miguel Beer-Taytay, 57-40, to go 1-1 in Group B in a tie with the Batang Beermen.
