    PUREFOODS NOT DONE WITH RETOOLING
Giants pursuing Cablay, looking at Crisano
    Tuesday, 28 August 2007

Purefoods is in hot pursuit of Brandon Cablay and is also looking at the possibility of enlisting banned player Alex Crisano as team management is determined to strengthen its lineup for a solid shot at another crown in the coming PBA season.

The Purefoods management has had exploratory talks with its Red Bull counterpart with regards to a possible trade deal involving Cablay.

Chances are Cablay would also take the route gone through by Rommel Adducul – from San Miguel Beer to Red Bull then to Purefoods.

"If the offer is good, why not?" said Red Bull top official Tony Chua, who is also the current PBA Board chairman.

Red Bull gained the services of Cablay and Kiko Adriano from San Miguel Beer a few weeks back in exchange for Larry Fonacier.

Cablay may well land at Purefoods without playing a single game with Red Bull like what happened to Adducul during the recent Fiesta Conference.

Crisano may also join the Giants, but that’s if he’s able secure needed documents to affirm his citizenship.

The 6-foot-6 behemoth, among those declared "Fil-shams" in 2004, is currently practicing with the Giants, hoping to gain re-entry in the local pro league in the coming 2007-08 campaign.

Asi Taulava, Mick Pennisi and Eric Menk are among Fil-Ams who have sorted out their citizenship problems and have since returned to action in the league.

Meanwhile, Air21 is another team looking to go to the negotiating table with Red Bull, keen on getting the services of vastly-improved slotman Carlo Sharma.

The Barakos, however, may well hold on to Sharma since it has given up Enrico Villanueva and Omanzie Rodriguez and just recently lost another vital cog in Rich Alvarez to injury.

Alvarez, the 2005 Rookie of the Year, has been declared out for the coming All-Filipino tourney due to an anterior cruciate ligament tear suffered in practice over the weekend.

If Red Bull has a surplus of players, it’s in the backcourt, after the team acquired Cablay and Kiko Adriano in exchange for Fonacier, then selecting Jojo Duncil in the recent Rookie Draft.

The team has other highly dependable backcourtmen in Topex Robinson, Celino Cruz, Junthy Valenzuela and Cyrus Baguio.

Chua, however, said their big men should step up on the exit of Alvarez.

Left to man the paint for the team are Sharma, Paolo Bugia, Mick Pennisi, Leo Najorda, Mike Hrabak, Don Camaso and new recruit Mark Andaya.

              KOREANS JAZZ UP PBA PRE-SEASON

PBA ballclubs strut their stuff and size up the field with the staging of a short pre-season tournament which fires off Sept. 8 featuring All-Filipino champion Barangay Ginebra against Purefoods at the San Sebastian-Cavite gym.
The visiting KT&G team from Korea spices up the pre-season event, playing five tune-up games against five different PBA teams.
The Welcoat Dragons are the first team to test the Koreans’ mettle at 4 p.m. at The Arena in San Juan on Sept. 10.
Alaska Milk, is the second team to play the KT&G squad also at 4 p.m. in the same San Juan playing venue.
San Miguel Beer, Red Bull and Coca-Cola are the three other teams given the opportunity to tangle with the visiting squad.
The teams play one round-robin in each group after which the top squads from each bracket advance to the one-game final.
The tourney also affords the PBA teams to make their final assessments on their prospective lineup for the coming season. Official roster for the 33rd PBA season will be submitted to the Commissioner’s Office after the pre-season event.

Bulls open to Cablay deal with Purefoods

                By NELSON BELTRAN

                The Philippine Star

Brandon Cablay may take the same route Rommel Adducul took – from San Miguel Beer to Red Bull then to Purefoods.

Purefoods is interested in the services of the Fil-Am guard, and Red Bull top honcho Tony Chua said they’re open to trade deal if given a good offer.

“We’re waiting what they will offer in exchange for Brandon,” said Chua on the possibility of another trade deal with the San Miguel group.

Air21 is another team looking for a trade negotiation with Red Bull, interested in the services of center Carlo Sharma who showed tremendous improvement in his game last season.

The Photokina Marketing franchise, however, may well hold on to Sharma since it has given up Enrico Villanueva and Omanzie Rodriguez and lost Rich Alvarez to injury.

At Purefoods, Alex Crisano is trying out for a PBA comeback but the 6-foot-6 behemoth may not make it since he’s not yet completed his papers. He was among those declared “Fil-shams” a few years back.

Asi Taulava, Mick Pennisi, Eric Menk, Rudy Hatfield and Rafi Reavis are among Fil-Ams who managed to sort out their papers and have since gained re-entry in the local pro league.

At Welcoat, Rob Wainwright signed a P4-million, two-year contract.

Alvarez, the 2005 Rookie of the Year awardee, has been declared out for the coming All-Filipino tourney due to an anterior cruciate ligament tear suffered in practice over the weekend.

If Red Bull has a surplus of players, it’s in the backcourt position with the team acquiring Cablay and Kiko Adriano in exchange for Larry Fonacier then selecting Jojo Duncil in the recent rookie draft.

The team has other highly dependable backcourt men in Topex Robinson, Celino Cruz, Junthy Valenzuela and Cyrus Baguio.

Chua, however, said their big men should step up on the exit of Alvarez.

Left to man the paint for the team are Sharma, Paolo Bugia, Mick Pennisi, Leo Najorda, Mike Hrabak, Don Camaso and new recruit Macmac Andaya.

                  Limpot retiring
                  Air21 sings up Intal, Kramer
                  By: Zean Macamay

IT took Jun Limpot 13 long years to win a PBA title. One season after that treasured moment, he may be forced to call it quits.

The player who was once called ‘The Jinx’ and ‘The Lord With No Rings’ has not yet received a formal offer from mother team Purefoods nearly one-and-a-half months after his contract expired, and has already prepared himself to make the hard decision to leave the league if no team wants him.

“Kung walang kukuha sa atin, then we have no other choice but to retire,” said Limpot, 35. “But as of now, I don’t want to entertain those thoughts muna. There are 10 teams in the PBA.”

Limpot’s contract with the Giants lapsed last July 15, and the former De La Salle ace said that re-signing with Purefoods is his priority. The Giants are currently in Bahrain competing in an invitational tournament.

The Surigao del Sur pride bared that there are ‘some teams’ willing to give him an offer but declined to disclose the details.

“Titingnan natin kung sino ang may magandang offer,” he said.

While Limpot wishes that Purefoods would be his last team before he retires, he has also come to realize that the Giants are in need of fresh, young and agile players suited for today’s brand of play.

And although gifted with a superb touch from medium range, Limpot unarguably lacks the speed to keep up with the others.

“We understand ‘yung needs ng team,” he said. “Kung anong player ang gusto nila. Ang sa akin lang, gusto ko pang maglaro ang siguro naman, malaki pa ang maitutulong natin sa team.”

Limpot was once considered as a franchise player after coming out fresh from college at La Salle, the school he guided to back-to-back UAAP championships in 1989 and 1990.

Sta. Lucia was the team that made him the top draft pick in 1993, and Limpot eventually won Rookie of the Year honors, narrowly beating Johnny Abarrientos.

But as years passed, frustrations piled up. He failed to steer the Realtors to a Finals stint despite signing a P28.7-million, 5-year contract in 1995, then the largest in the PBA.

When Sta. Lucia traded him to Ginebra for Marlou Aquino in 2000, the Realtors won their first title the year after (Governors’ Cup), leading many to believe that he was a ‘jinx.’

In 2004, the Gin Kings sent him to Purefoods for Andy Seigle. He finally won a title in the Philippine Cup of the 2005-2006 season, producing a big game of 9 points and 16 rebounds in the series-clinching Game Six against Red Bull.

Meantime, Air21 is hoping that it can end up with a better season following the acquisitions of JC Intal and Doug Kramer.

“Our nucleus, which is composed of Wynne Arboleda, Gary David, Arwind Santos, Ranidel de Ocampo, Nino Canaleta and Homer Se, is untouched and more mature this season. And with the entry of Intal and Kramer, we hope to do better,” said A21 team manager Lito Alvarez. “This team is capable of providing a different kind showtime.”

Alvarez signed the two former Blue Eagles to three-year deals, with Intal, who was chosen fourth overall, getting a deal close to P8 million. Kramer, who chosen as no. 5 overall, inked a P7-million pact.

Alvarez said they were not expecting to get the 6-3 Intal during the PBA Rookie Draft, along with Kramer, but their acquisition was a welcome development to the Bert Lina-owned franchise.

“We were surprised and we were lucky,” Alvarez said, surprised that someone of Intal’s caliber fell on the Express lap.

Intal and Kramer were teammates when the Ateneo Blue Eagles won the 2002 crown in the UAAP. Last year, the Eagles placed runner-up to the University of Santo Tomas Tigers.

Intal said that Air21’s style as a running team suits him just fine since he likes to run a lot. He added that playing alongside former FEU rival Arwind Santos and former UE Warrior Canaleta is something to look forward to.

“That’s my game. I am excited to play a lot of games with Air21,” remarked Intal.

Kramer said he hopes that he won’t play like a rookie when the season begins. He added that the experiences he gained in the UAAP and the PBL would bring out his mature side. “I hope to play like a veteran in the PBA,” said Kramer.

Ginebra, has officially released center Andy Siegle.
The PBA office yesterday informed the rest of the teams about the release that will make the oft-injured Siegle free to sign directly with other teams outside of the San Miguel Corp. franchises.
If no other team will signify interest in signing up Siegle, he can deal directly with Ginebra’s two other sister teams Purefoods TJ Giants and San Miguel Beer.

                            3 Gin Kings coming back
                            By Rey Joble, Journal Online
                            August 31, 2007

Former PBA Most Valuable Player Eric Menk is set to be back along with JJ Helterbrand after a vacation in the United States.

So is Raffi Reavis, who is set to return after a shoulder injury operation.

And Johnny Abarrientos has renewed ties with Ginebra for another year, making the league's most popular squad ready to defend its Philippine Cup crown beginning Oct.14.

"He was supposed to be here last week, but he failed to make it," Ginebra coach Jong Uichico said. "We still don't know why he failed to make the trip back home, but at least, he gave an advisory that he is set to return and we are preparing for it. Right now, strengthening na lang ang gagawin sa shoulder niya so he can play again."

"As for Eric, he is set to be here anytime and malamang sabay na sila ni JJ," added Uichico.

Menk injured his leg in the latter part of the 2006-2007 season outside of the basketball court, but he worked his way back in the closing stretch of the Fiesta Conference.

In fact, the 6-6 center even made it to the national team in Tokushima, Japan, but was never his usual self since incurring an injury.

His return, however, will be a big boost to the Gin Kings' title-retention drive. Menk appeared to have already fixed his personal problems.

"I don't think Eric will exchange career over personal matters at this moment. We're all professionals and I expect him to act like one," said Uichico. "Now, we're business as usual and we're waiting for everyone. Our system is that we at this team have no superstars and everybody will be given the chance."

Eman Inks 2-Year Deal with SMB

Samigue Eman finally inked a two-year deal with San Miguel Tuesday.

Hector Calma, the Beermen's team manager, said that Eman, the No. 2 overall draft pick, signed a two-year deal with San Miguel, a team considered as a hot favorite to win the Philippine Cup that begins on Oct. 24.

Eman is expected to act as a back-up to Danny Ildefonso and Villanueva, but could find his playing time dwindle once the injured Dorian Peña returns to action in two months' time.

Calma refused to disclose the details of the deal. Many, however, consider Eman as a mere trade bait, particularly on JC Intal.

Intal, who on Tuesday also signed an P8 million three-year pact with the Express, is the player the Beermen desire to snatch as one coming off the bench for Dondon Hontiveros.

Chua revealed that he is contemplating on including members of the media in the panel that will select the league's permanent commissioner.

"I think it will be of great help to the PBA if we invite the media to play a key role in selecting the league's future commissioner," said Chua Wednesday.

The Red Bull team manager said that those being eyed are columnists and editors, and those covering the PBA beat. He said that at this point, at least two and a maximum of five media members are being considered.
