PUREFOODS NOT DONE WITH RETOOLING
Giants pursuing Cablay, looking at Crisano
Tuesday, 28 August 2007
Purefoods is in hot pursuit of Brandon Cablay and is also looking at the possibility of enlisting banned player Alex Crisano as team management is determined to strengthen its lineup for a solid shot at another crown in the coming PBA season.
The Purefoods management has had exploratory talks with its Red Bull counterpart with regards to a possible trade deal involving Cablay.
Chances are Cablay would also take the route gone through by Rommel Adducul – from San Miguel Beer to Red Bull then to Purefoods.
"If the offer is good, why not?" said Red Bull top official Tony Chua, who is also the current PBA Board chairman.
Red Bull gained the services of Cablay and Kiko Adriano from San Miguel Beer a few weeks back in exchange for Larry Fonacier.
Cablay may well land at Purefoods without playing a single game with Red Bull like what happened to Adducul during the recent Fiesta Conference.
Crisano may also join the Giants, but that’s if he’s able secure needed documents to affirm his citizenship.
The 6-foot-6 behemoth, among those declared "Fil-shams" in 2004, is currently practicing with the Giants, hoping to gain re-entry in the local pro league in the coming 2007-08 campaign.
Asi Taulava, Mick Pennisi and Eric Menk are among Fil-Ams who have sorted out their citizenship problems and have since returned to action in the league.
Meanwhile, Air21 is another team looking to go to the negotiating table with Red Bull, keen on getting the services of vastly-improved slotman Carlo Sharma.
The Barakos, however, may well hold on to Sharma since it has given up Enrico Villanueva and Omanzie Rodriguez and just recently lost another vital cog in Rich Alvarez to injury.
Alvarez, the 2005 Rookie of the Year, has been declared out for the coming All-Filipino tourney due to an anterior cruciate ligament tear suffered in practice over the weekend.
If Red Bull has a surplus of players, it’s in the backcourt, after the team acquired Cablay and Kiko Adriano in exchange for Fonacier, then selecting Jojo Duncil in the recent Rookie Draft.
The team has other highly dependable backcourtmen in Topex Robinson, Celino Cruz, Junthy Valenzuela and Cyrus Baguio.
Chua, however, said their big men should step up on the exit of Alvarez.
Left to man the paint for the team are Sharma, Paolo Bugia, Mick Pennisi, Leo Najorda, Mike Hrabak, Don Camaso and new recruit Mark Andaya.
