Ceres FC to Face JDT in Asean Zonal Semifinals on May 17, 31

    Saturday, May 06, 2017
    By HENRY G. DOBLE CERES

Negros Football Club (FC) survived Tampines Rovers, 4-2 to continue their quest in the Asian Football Confederation Asean Zonal semifinals with a date against Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) of Malaysia.

The Bacolod-based club will challenge the Malaysians in an away match on May 17 at the Tan Sri Dato Haji Hassan Yunos Stadium in Johor Bahru.

The Busmen will play host at Panaad Park and Stadium on May 31 after securing semifinals berth last May 3 at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.

Club director Ali Go said their do-or-die face-off with Tampines in Group G was a tough one.

“It was a very hard game for us. We were just mentally prepared for it,” he said.

“Do-or-die games are always hard but the team responded well. Everybody was prepared for the game.”

Global and Ceres Aim to Make History at AFC Cup

Two Pinoy clubs are on the cusp of progressing past the first knockout stage for the first time

This week Ceres and Global will attempt to go where no Filipino club has gone before: beyond the first knockout stage of the AFC Cup.

Last year Ceres and Kaya were the two Filipino clubs who reached the knockout stage. But both stumbled at that hurdle, with Kaya getting walloped by Malaysian powerhouse Johor Darul Ta'zim and Ceres falling at home to Hong Kong outfit South China.

The format is different this year, with the top 4 ASEAN clubs from the group stage in one bracket, and the ties are now two-legged aggregate goals contests at this phase instead of one match.

After this week's games Global will face Home United in Singapore on the 30th of May and Ceres hosts JDT in Panaad the day after. The series winners proceed to the two-legged ASEAN zone finals, which will be between the two Filipino teams if they both win.

Global is riding high. The club representing Cebu in the PFL won Group F with 15 points, the most of any ASEAN side. They also are still enjoying the glow of a pulsating home upset of JDT last month. That defeat against the Malaysian giants and 2015 AFC Cup champs will give them plenty of confidence.

In their last competitive match two weekends ago they beat JPV Marikina 2-1 in their PFL opener.

But Global have some issues: Brazilian central defender Wesley Dos Santos is unavailable for this match because of accumulated yellow cards. That will likely mean that Dennis Villanueva will scoot back from central mid to partner Amani Aguinaldo in the heart of the defense.

Misagh Bahadoran is reportedly unlikely to start. He is still recovering from a knee injury. But if the Azkal is anywhere in the vicinity of 70-80% it is likely he will have a run-out on Tuesday.

The other concern is the sudden departure of coach Toshiaki Imai. The avuncular Japanese veteran guided Global into the knockout stage but has abruptly returned to his homeland.

Assistant coach Marjo Allado will likely be the interim head coach on Tuesday but Singaporean mentor Akbar Nawas, a former Tampines Rovers coach, will serve as technical consultant on a short-term basis according to this report.

Global has been changing coaches often of late. They began the 2016 season with Leigh Manson at the helm. Then John Burridge replaced the Scot near the end of the championship season. Burridge left soon after, and Kenichi Yatsuhashi came in but lasted a week and half before Imai arrived in January. Counting Allado, that is five coaches in less than a year.

But Global veteran Matt Hartmann is unfazed.

An awesome game between Ceres-Negros FC and Malaysia's Johor Darul Tazim FC, about as good as it gets.

Aside from the fact that five goals were scored between the teams, there were many, many more great chances at goal by both teams. Ceres was just a little bit unlucky in this game, with the last goal against them unintentionally being deflected into the net.

Ceres now has the upper hand because after scoring two away goals, they now will be facing JDT in their home pitch in Panaad, the date of which will be revealed later.

What a tragedy for Global-Manila FC, they were leading the game until Dennis Villanueva did that stup@% high footed challenge that earned him a Red Card. Then the game wasn't decided until the very last minute when Home United FC scored off a Free Kick.

Penang FA Spring Surprise by Signing Mark Hartmann

              By Gowri Krishnan - June 8, 20170

Penang FA sprung a surprise on their fans as they announced the signing of Mark Hartmann on their official Facebook page.

The news came as a surprise as there were no rumours linking the former Sarawak striker with the Panthers prior to this.

Mark Hartmann would definitely pack more punch to Penang’s forward line, alongside their two other striking force, Nigel Dabinyaba and Sanna Nyasi.

Hartmann Returns from Thailand to Settle Unfinished Business in Malaysia

Philippines international striker Mark Hartmann revealed he chose to return to Malaysia, despite receiving offers from Thailand.

                by Desmond Lim
                Published 8 June 2017

The 25-year-old moved to Sarawak at the start of the season after leaving S.League side Geylang International at the end of the 2016 season.

However, Hartmann was released from Sarawak during the 2017 Malaysia Super League (MSL) mid-season break despite putting in some impressive performances, as the Crocs look to inject new blood into the team and avoid relegation.

There is definitely unfinished business and I am fully focused on giving my all with Penang
With offers from Thailand, Hartmann was prepared to make the switch to Thailand, before Penang’s newly-appointed head coach Zainal Abidin came in with an offer at the last minute.

“I was in Bangkok negotiating with two Thai League clubs and was close to putting pen to paper but the call from coach Zainal came at the very last minute,” Hartmann shared.

“He is one of Malaysia's top coaches and the chance to work with him made it an almost impossible opportunity to pass on.”

Just HORRIBLE officiating in Singapore during the Home United FC vs. Ceres-Negros FC during their AFC Cup game. Consider the following:
                        - A Penalty Kick against Negros was called when there shouldn't have been any;
                        - A Handball by a Home United player inside their Penalty Box was not called;
                        - A Ceres goal was disqualified due to a Offside Call when there wasn't one.
                        - And a second Ceres goal was disqualified again due to another non-existent Offside Call

ALL items I claimed above were CONFIRMED during the Slomo Replays, just watch the replays yourself.

That is one problem with Football in that bad officiating can easily break any team psychologically, simply because it is so hard to score in Football, you put in all of that effort and then the officials just throws it all away.

These Singapore teams, even if they aren't getting a lot of live patronage are too devious when it comes to international play. They are used to things like this. I think it is a disgrace to Singapore in particular who claims to be first world country and yet to be as petty as this.

News about Mark Hartmann has been rare ever since he transferred to a Malaysian club, but he seems to be doing fine there now.

Panthers Believe Crocs Tie Can be Turning Point to Escape the Drop

                          Friday, 4 August 2017
                          BY ERIC SAMUEL

PETALING JAYA: Penang are in high spirits ahead of their Super League bottom-of-the-table clash against Sarawak.

Panthers coach Zainal Abidin Hassan believes their match against the Crocs at the State Stadium in Kuching tomorrow “could be the turning point in our bid to escape relegation”.

“This could be our big break,” admitted Zainal, who is aware that this is Penang’s first real chance to avoid propping up the 12-team standings in eight months.

The former international replaced Englishman Ashley Westwood, who was “rested” in March after a run of poor form which saw the Islanders hit rock bottom with just two points from eight matches.

Now, after 10 matches, Penang are still bottom with 12 points. But they can move up one rung for the first time if they beat Sarawak, who are just two points above them.

“The players have worked hard and have made good progress. This could be our chance to move out of the bottom spot for the first time. If we can do that, it will definitely be the turning point for us,” said Zainal.

There has been a marked improvement in the team’s performance since the introduction of two new strikers – Filipino Mark Hartmann and Gambia’s Sanna Nyassi – in the second transfer window.
