USA Basketball announced today a list of 35 invitees to the trials, that will be attended by over 100 applicants as well.
The invitees list is led by 2019-class Samantha Brunelle, member of the 2016 U17 WC team and Aaliyah Boston, who was among the 18 finalists last year.
Just few names are known, among them is Francesca Belibi who became famous as the first girl in Colorado dunking in a game.

What do Samantha Brunelle, Kylee Watson and Azzi Fudd have in common? They're all regarded as the top prospect in their class. And they all made the cut down to the final 18 at the USA Basketball U17 trials.

                    Kylee Watson Fw, 6-4, 2020

After the last cuts, the team has lost some size on frontcourt, maybe it won't be necessary in this tornament.

Venezuela's Luisanny Zapata, who was the top scorer at last year's South American U15 championship (19.4 ppg, .571 FG), and also the team's top scorer at the 2015 Americas U16 championship, is out with a knee injury.

No close games on the first day. US led Colombia 32-4 after the first quarter, but at times later on they did have trouble with Colombia's aggressive defense. Argentina looked pretty good but they turned the ball over a lot and will have a much harder time executing their offense against Canada and the US. Would be a big surprise if the four winners today were not the four WC qualifiers.

Star of the day was Mexican guard Karina Esquer, whose 34 points almost matched Puerto Rico's 35 turnovers.

US had a very sluggish first quarter against Mexico, then started pressing(!!), scored 13 points in less than 3 minutes, and it seemed to energize they ran the Mexicans off the court the rest of the game. I have to revise my comment about being about the four first-day winners being big favorites for qualifying as Colombia has some chance to beat Mexico, they are not very big or skilled but they are aggressive on defense and the Mexicans will have trouble with that.

42 turnovers for Puerto Rico today.

Canada and Argentina sealed their qualification with big wins.

Historic qualification of Colombia, that upset Mexico 45-41. It was a tense game, certainly not high level and marked by some 70 turnovers altogether. Mexico took a slight edge during Q4 but went scoreless in the last couple of minutes and a more energetic Colombian team achieved the unexpected qualification. Maybe needless to say that COL could barely compete in U16 Euro Div.B and took advantage of the forced absence of Brazil.
