  • 2017 U23 Women's Four Nations Tournament

Inaugural U23 Four Nations Tournament will be played Aug 12-15 in Tokyo (JPN).

USA Basketball announced today the coaching staff that will lead a college national team against Australia, Canada and Japan at the tournament.

It's rather surprising, since such squad would match a WUG team USA Basketball could have sent this year (University of Maryland will instead represent USA at 2017 Taipei Universiade).

As many as 40 college players have been announced by USA Basketball to attend the U23 NT training camp from July 31-Aug 4.

All top NCAA players are in the list, many of them with previous international experience at cadet/junior and WUG level. Only major names missing are Notre Dame Brianna Turner (injured) and FSU Shakayla Thomas (2015 U19 WC team, was kicked out before the end of the tournament).

It's also confirmed that Canada will participate with a Developement team (to be named) that will later compete at the Taipei WUG.

The UConn players won't be eligible for selection since they will be touring Italy at the same time:

The UConn contingent will not be eligible for selection to the team though as the Huskies are booked for a foreign tour of Italy from Aug. 12-23. However, all four are excited to participate in the training camp regardless of that fact.

So the final roster is nearly losing half of its potential. The four Huskies would have been team's sure locks, imo.

37 players confirmed for training camp by USA Basketball:

Lexie Brown, Katelynn Flaherty and Marina Mabrey have disappeared from the previous list.

The four UConn players are still in, they probably will attend but won't be with the team.

                US U23 team announced:

                Ariel Atkins (G 5-11, Texas 2018)
Monique Billings (Fw 6-4, UCLA 2018)
                Kalani Brown (C 6-6, Baylor 2019)
                Jordin Canada (G 5-6, UCLA 2018)
                Asia Durr (G 5-10, Louisville 2019)
                Sabrina Ionescu (G 5-10, Oregon 2020)
                Brittany McPhee (G 6-0, Stanford 2018)
                Kelsey Mitchell (G 5-7, Ohio State 2018)
                Jaime Nared (G/F 6-2, Tennessee 2018)
                Arike Ogunbowale (G 5-8, Notre Dame 2019)
                Mercedes Russell (C 6-6, Tennessee 2017)
                A'ja Wilson (F/C 6-5, South Carolina 2018)

Few surprises in the choice considering the unavailabilty of UConn participants.

In the intrasquad final Team 3 led by Kelsey Mitchell and Erin Boley each with 19 pts beat Team 2, 77-74 (Linnae Harper 15).

Unfortunately Penn State's leading scorer Teniya Page suffered a fractured ankle during the training camp putting her next season at risk.

Among NCAA players most experienced are Crozon and Fogg, who completed their final season this year. Bongomin was a sub center at the recent U19 WC tournament.

This is the team headed to Taipei WUG as well.

US U23 team lost its top player in the roster as Aja Wilson withdrew due to (minor) injury. Guard Linnae Harper added to the team.

Strange replacement of a 6-5 F/C player, team will be crowded with guards (unless some of them will be moved to #3 pos).

                          Japan-Canada 79-54 (Fujimoto 14, Tamura, Tsumura 12 - Crozon 13). Canada's advantage at rebounding was derailed by 34 turnovers (20 JPN steals).

                          USA-Australia 78-60 (Durr 14, Ionescu 13, Brown 12, Mitchell 11 - Wallace 11, Wehrung 10). US team shot much better, over 52% FG2.

                            Day 2:

Australia-Japan 84-75 (Garbin 26, Wehrung 13, Wallace 11 - Hayashi 27, Fujimoto 10). Tight game until Q3, Australia had the edge in rebounding, both teams made a lot of threes.

USA-Canada 107-61 (Ogunbowale 17, McPhee 15, Ionescu 10 - Crozon 12). All 12 US players scored. If boxscore is correct USA hit 60% FG despite being just 2/13 from deep, McPhee was perfect with 7/7 FG and 1/1 FT.
