Though missing 2016 U18 MVP Alexia Chartereau (Sr NT) France looks a strong contender, with home wins over Australia, Canada and China in exhibition games.

In the final day of Spilimbergo tournament USA finished 3-0 with an unimpressive win over Latvia 64-56. US team struggled in scoring and wasn't able to extend its lead in the 2nd half. Ruthy Hebard again led USA with 15 pts, followed by Tyasha Harris with 14, but as many as six players didn't score a single FG.

Spain beat Italy 60-46 after trailing 32-26 at ht. Iris Junio (welcome back) led Spain with 13, Elisa Pinzan was high for Italy with 11.

Italy added to yesterday's roster Olbis Futo Andrè a 6-3 athletic center who was impressive at the Euro U20 for her rebounding ability and could make an impact under the basket if selected.

Spain finished 2-1, Latvia 1-2 and Italy 0-3.

China's official Fiba roster still includes center Yueru Li, who actually is with Sr NT at the Asian Cup (23-29 July). China recently played exhibition games in France with a 10-member team (neither Yueru Li nor Yijia Cao were in the roster).

First tournament game and big upset, as Japan beat favorite Australia 66-61, despite 21 points of Magbegor. Tough game and deserved win of Japan over a sloppy Australian team that had a bad shooting day from most of its backcourt players (1/20 FG3!). Takahara led a balanced Japan attack with 12.

In the only other two interesting games, France held off newcomer Latvia 69-60 after comfortably leading at halftime, while Italy lost to China and its overwhelming frontcourt (Xu Han and Yu Tang). Chinese team took an early lead with Italy's bigs Cubaj and Madera struggling and never relinquished, even when Italian team closed the gap in the final minutes, to finish 74-63. Han and Tang scored together 31 points, while from the Italian side Olbis Futo Andre led the scoring with 18. Chinese team had just seven players entering the game. Russia and Hungary scored 100+ points in onslaughts of Egypt and Mexico. In another mismatch Canada easily beat weak Korea collecting as many as 81 rebounds (vs 21...).

US beat Mali 95-58, offense was good for the most part (especially considering Hebard had early fouls and didn't do much), rebounded well, defense not so great IMO. Interesting game against China tomorrow.

Spain eventually pulled away from Puerto Rico, but they didn't look particularly talented. OTOH neither did their men and they had a good run.

US beating China 48-15 at halftime. Turned the intensity up several notches today, dominating with superior athleticism and hustle.

Egypt beats Puerto Rico 69-52, the first time their women have won a game at a FIBA world youth championship after 19 straight losses. Pretty embarrassing for Puerto Rico losing to Egypt in both men and women.

In late game Russia rolled over Spain with its towers Musina and Vadeeva (both in double doubles). Musina especially had a great game, but also other less heralded Russian bigs (Cheren, Kozhukhar and Kornienko) contributed to the win. Spain strangely took few shots from beyond the arc.

France was upset by Canada in a game dominated by harsh defenses, after a very poor shooting both from the inside and the outside. Canada surprisingly won the battle of the boards, with young Amihere and Brown among the best.

Japan deservedly edged Hungary in an early game, legitimating its group's leadership.

Best play so far the 1st half of USA vs China.

More doubts than confirmations from today's US team, winner of all-defense Italy. First half really close, USA brilliant just in Q3, creating the break. Very poor shooting both sides, US team couldn't score a single point in the final 2 1/2 minutes.
Amazing performance of Canada's Aislinn Konig (10 threes), and fine double doubles of Ezi Magbegor (AUS) and Xu Han (CHN).

                              Looking at the brackets:

Ro16 most interesting games should on paper be FRA-HUN and ITA-ESP, in perspective a big clash RUS-AUS is expected in qf, unfortunately one of them won't reach the medals zone.

Djaldi-Tabdi didn't play for France today, is she injured?

Only saw the second half of the US-Italy game, sounds like I was lucky to miss the first half. US played really well until they opened up the lead but as always I'd like to see a more aggressive defense, they are much better in an uptempo game.
