  • Philippines NT's Most Horrendous Hearthbreakers

List of the most horrendous heartbreaking losses of the Philippine NT

    5. Philippines - Japan, 2007 Jones Cup in Taiwan - the Philippines after leading 90% of the game, found itself unable to score in the dying minutes of the game. With time down to 8 secs, score tied, ball possession to the Philippines, Hontiveros, committed his first turnover of the game in the most ill-fated time, allowing the Japaneses to steal and run the ball for an uncontested lay-up, with 1 second to go.

    4. Philippines - Lebanon, 2007 Jones Cup in Taiwan - Philippines for 3 quarters did an excellent job of keeping the Lebanese at bay, and still led by 5 at the closing minute, but poor execution and costly turnovers by Menk and Caguioa allowed the Lebanese to tie the game with more than 15 seconds to go. Ball possession to the Philippines, but Hontiveros rushed a shot, allowing the Lebanese to advance the ball. While everybody in the gym knew Lebanon's star El Khatib will take the last shot, he instead dished the ball to Rony Fahed, who earlier was elbowed to the face by Mik Penissi, who got his sweet revenge by banking an improbable 3 at the buzzer.

    3. Philippines - Japan, 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games - Bronze medal game against host Japan. It was a see-saw battle as both teams were determined to salvage pride. it was a close game up to last second. After Japan made a basket to put them ahead by 2 on the dying seconds, Patrimonio willed himself on the lane and was fouled sending him to the FT line. Needing to can 2 free throws to tie the game, the normally ice-cooled captain, cracked under pressured and split his FTs, Philippines sent Japan to the line, but japan made both free throws to put them by 3. A desperation 3 by Ato Agustin rimmed out giving the bronze to Japan.

    2. Philippines- South Korea, 1986 Seoul Asian Games - Semifinal, winner will face China in the gold medal game. Korea behind star guard Hur Jae led most the game, but the Philippines battled back behind then amateur stand outs Magsanoc, Caidic , Harmon Codinera and Patrimonio. With seconds to go, Korea still led by 1, Caidic stole the ball and hurried back to his frontcourt with only a solitary defender between him and the basket. There was contact as he droved for a lay up, while everybody in the gym expected a foul on the Korean defender, the Japanese ref, maybe out of revenge because the Philippines beat the Japanese team the night before, called a charging foul on Caidic. Game over to Korea.

    1. Philippines - South Korea, 2002 Busan Asian Games - This game i can't forget. It's a Saturday, and everybody was glued on their TV set as Philippine battled host Korea in the semifinal game, the winner will face Yao Ming and the Chinese for the gold medal. Nearly 20 years after that horrendous heart breaker in Seoul, the nationals seek revenge in Korean soil, this time in Busan. With Racela orchestrating the offense, and a couple of 3's from him and SMB teammate Hontiveros, the Philippines took the lead from Korea, time down to few seconds. After an unfruitful possession by Korea, they fouled Racela sending him to the line. Philippines up by 2 with under 8 seconds remaining, needed at least an FT conversion from the normally ice-cooled Racela. He missed both. Korea advanced the ball, then fumbled, but on the stroke of luck, the ball found its way to Lee "Paking Shet" San Min's hands. He faked both Dondon and Asi out of their shorts, and calmly buried a 3 pointer at th buzzer. The whole nation weeped, and a collective shout of "PAKING SHET" was heard all over.

While we haven't beaten China yet in some meaningful games, it's the Koreans who constantly provide us with frustrations and "paking shet" moments. Consider this:

1986 - Seoul Asian Games - the infamous Caidic charging foul

1994 - Hiroshima Asian Games - Phil NT led 14 at the half, but Korean star guard Hur Jae exploded from all over

1998- After Tim Cone boasted that the Centennials will kick Korea's butt 9 out of 10 times, the hordes of Korean students and expats here in the Philippines sent the newsclippings back home and eventually made their way to the Korea NT. The result: Korea ambushed the Phil NT for a 20 point win with Korea's fat PG running rings around Racela and Johnny A. and center Seo totally dominated the suddenly tail-in-its-back centers Aquino and A.Seigle.

2002 - The "Paking Shet" game. Enuff said

the last time we beat Korea was in the the 1998 Jones Cup. Where they fielded their U-21 team against our Centennial Team.

I would say both 1986 and 2002 Asian Games semi-finals against South Korea are the worst games the Philippines ever had... both games were sort of similar and could have given us a chance to win gold or silver for the next games... but too bad we loss... the 1986 were probably one (if not the most) of the most controversial basketball games in the Asian Games basketball history... too bad that stupid Japanese referee got away from it...

I think.. the Filipino fans should get used to heartbreaking losses..and accept it gracefully.. its part of the international competition..endgame upset is really a trend in FIBA, otherwise, if there are no upsets, then international basketball will be boring..
It's ironic to see limited efforts from players with maximum salary.
I wish they would apply "sabermetrics" in those financially challenged PBA teams to acquire players who are value for their money.

Here's one for the books, 1991 Asian Youth Championship. semifinal game against Japan, held in Fukoaka, Japan...Players for the Philippines were the young Limpot, Aquino, Fiehl, Locsin, Naron and bunch of studs. On warm ups...repeat, during WARM UPS, the Philippines were doing dunks in the layup line. Dunking during warm -ups!!!! all of a sudden, the referee for the upcoming game assessed them a technical foul, for hanging on the rim!!! The damned game havent started yet, and yet, the refs assessed the Philippines with a techincal foul!!!! The game actually started 0-2 in favor of Japan. and during the game, the refs kept calling dubious fouls on the Philippines. Needless to say, Japan won over the Philippines by, guess what, 2 freekin points!!!! Locsin and company reportedly went after the ref and almost manhandled him, but was escorted / protected by the arena security. Urban legend you say? No, it happened for real!!!!
