I'm predicting a bad L against South Korea, probably 20+ turnovers. The team has some perimeter talent, but inexperienced, and lack of preparation won't help. The point guards are Sun Minghui (averages 2.9 ppg in CBA) and Shi Yi (also 2.9 ppg in CBA). I like how they played vs. HK, but it's foolish to believe some of those passes will work against Korea.

Too many butterfingers in the paint. After this window, this team has got to get better big men. Dong Hanlin and Shen Zijie are pretty much the same player, only good enough for <5 min off the bench.

My guess is only 2-3 players here will make the NT in 2019: Ding Yanyuhang, Wang Zhelin (and maybe Abdushalam). The rest are either too old, too one-dimensional or too sloppy. Half of them can barely get off the bench in CBA.

I nnever see abdushalam play even in Xinjiang..
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..

Xinjiang has a deep bench, and at least last year the guy did nothing but pass towels and water cups. But he's young, tall, mobile, athletic, active, has a good feel and stroke, and more importantly a lot of confidence despite his age. I'm a firm believer that the ideal Chinese SF needs to be over 200cm, so I'm a little biased toward him.

Happily eating my words now. While it's true half the team are CBA benchwarmers, Ding Yanyuhang + Wang Zhelin + Abdushalam + Sun Minghui were enough (the last 2 are still CBA benchwarmers but appear good enough for the "A" team if there is one).

I can't say enough about Sun Minghui, definitely in the 2019 NT discussion after this game, despite his troubles against the full-court press late in the game. By the way Korea was too arrogant to not FCP until very late, frankly China was better than them at every aspect--including the 3--with the exception of sloppiness with the ball, and Korea did not take advantage of that at all.

For the next window, I'm fine with keeping most of the team like Fang Shuo, Liu Zhixuan, Xirelijan etc even though their chances of playing in 2019 are slim. (Wang Zirui is not good enough for FIBA. Shi Yi? Maybe, not too sure.) But this team has to get better big men. Wang Zhelin played 30 minutes, and though he played reasonably well, he has butterfingers and cannot really defend. Shen Zijie didn't play, and Yu Changdong and Dong Hanlin didn't do anything in limited minutes. With Zhou Qi in the NBA, the Red Team pool still has better options like Zou Yuchen, Fan Ziming, Xu Zhonghao, and even Zhang Zhaoxu is probably more useful than Dong Hanlin.

If I were to assemble China's "A" team today, eyeing 2019 (therefore no Yi Jianlian):

Guards: Guo Ailun*, Zhao Jiwei, Zhao Rui, Sun Minghui^
Forwards: Ding Yanyuhang^, Abdushalam^, Zhai Xiaochuan, Zhou Peng*
Bigs: Zhou Qi, Zou Yuchen, Wang Zhelin^, Hu Jinqiu*

              * = played in Asia Cup, ^ = played in Qualifiers:

I think this roster will be at least 70% accurate in 2019 too, though it won't surprise me if someone like Xing Zhiqiang or Fu Hao makes the roster over Zhou Peng or Zhai Xiaochuan. Defending the post is going to be a huge problem against European teams, but the perimeter players are probably tolerable, and I think much better than the previous generation of Liu Wei/Wang Shipeng/Zhu Fangyu. I can only hope the Rockets develop Zhou Qi the right way fast, blocking scrubs in garbage time is entertainment, not real basketball like boxing out, posting up, and finishing strong is.

                2nd window roster announced:

                * = played in Asia Cup
G - Wu Qian*, Yu Dehao*, Guo Ailun*, Luo Xudong, Xu Mengjun
F - Zhou Peng*, Li Gen*, Ren Junfei*, Gu Quan*, Keranbek Maken, Zhu Yanxi
C - Han Dejun*, Hu Jinqiu*, Yi Jianlian, Fan Ziming, Tao Hanlin

Pretty much the underperforming Asia Cup team, but probably even weaker in the backcourt. However, some players appear to have improved alot in the CBA namely Wu Qian and Hu Jinqiu. If Yi plays, the team should be solid for these 2 games, but not enough for the top Asian level.

Xu Mengjun is a CBA rookie (born 1998) and averaging over an impressive 9ppg, but his only strength seems to be 3pt shooting (41%).

2017 Asian Cup - Blue Team
                          1st window - Red Team
                          2nd window - Blue Team
                          3rd window - Red Team

                          Proposed schedule:

Asian Games (August/September) - Red Team
4th window (September) - Blue team
                          5th window (November/December) - A Team
                          6th window (February) - A Team

I think Red Team is better than the Blue Team.

According to the latest news, Guo Ailun will be there, but he hasn't been with the team all summer. Probably no Yi Jianlian.

Team Blue is not as talented as the Red Team, especially on offense, due to lack of quality guards. The team does have decent rebounders and a very tall frontcourt, and should be capable of winning both games this window.

                              Guo Ailun workouts this summer:
