The journey of the Men’s National Team (Azkals) to the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 continues. The Asian Cup is the prestigious national teams tournament of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for countries in Asia.

The Philippine Men’s National Team is in the final qualifying round of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019. The Philippines are currently on top of Group F with six points after wins over Nepal and Tajikistan early this year.

The Philippine Football Federation invites all football enthusiasts and stakeholders to the third match of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Qualifiers which will pit the Philippines against Yemen on 5 September 2017, 7:30 PM at the Pana-ad Park and Football Stadium in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

The match is the second home game for the Philippines after its match against Nepal last 28 March 2017 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. The Azkals won that match, 4-1.

    • Painful to watch as the U22 Azkals got routed again, but at this point let us just appreciate the excellent ball control that Vietnam has.

        • The "Pinoy Football Super Tuesday" turned out to be a disaster as all three Philippine team lost their games. The Philippines U22 team lost to the Thais, knocking them out of the contention for a medal.

The scoreline wasn't so bad, and they did get some decent chances in. The Philippines U22's next game will be against Timor Leste, let's hope we win that one.

KUALA LUMPUR — The Philippine national under-22 team squeaked past Timor Leste, 2-1, to exit the Southeast Asian Games football competition on a high note at UM Arena here on Thursday night.

The Filipino booters closed out their stint in Group B with two wins and three losses, good for fourth place in the tough six-team bracket.

It was an improvement from their performance in the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore, where the Pinoys lost all four of their games.

Jarvey Gayoso, the UAAP Season 79 men's football MVP, scored both of the Philippines' goals against Timor Leste, including the match winner during stoppage time.

Defending champion Thailand topped Group B with four wins and one draw while Indonesia, with three victories and two draws, placed second, as both squads advanced to the crossover semifinals on Saturday.

                By Jonas Terrado

The Philippine Azkals will be missing several key players for their crucial match against Yemen on Sept. 5 in the 2019 Asian Cup third round qualifiers at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

Striker Javier Patino and defender Amani Aguinaldo are out because of injuries while another defender, Daisuke Sato, will serve a one-match ban for accumulating two yellow cards, leaving Azkals coach Thomas Dooley to tap new players.

Making the Azkals’ lineup for the first time are Fil-German Harry Foll, Meralco’s Tyler Matas and Davao Aguilas’ Dylan De Bruycker and Ceres-Negros’ Joshua Grommen.

                  • Azkals in Rigid Training for September 5 Match

Saturday, September 02, 2017 By HENRY G. DOBLE

THE Philippine men’s football team is currently in tough preparation ahead of the September 5 match against Yemen for the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Qualifiers at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.

The Philippine side is doing well in their group and may have a home advantage, but it will not take Yemen lightly.

Azkals’ head coach Thomas Dooley said that for the national team to play in higher level of competitions, they need more training and more experience, more knowledge and more fitness.

Not in the 24-man lineup that Dooley called up. Not sure why, but maybe Dooley thinks he has enough material now in the lineup that he selected.

                      • AFC ASIAN CUP 2019 QUALIFIERS: GROUP F PREVIEW

                        / Sep 04 2017 /

Kuala Lumpur: Yemen take on the Philippines in a showdown between the top two teams in Group F of the qualifying rounds for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup on Tuesday evening hoping to overcome an arduous journey and keep their bid for a first-ever appearance at the continental championships on track.

Abraham Mebratu’s team are two points behind the Azkals having picked up a win over Tajikistan and a draw with Nepal in their opening two games, but the team from west Asia have had to endure a difficult trip to the southern city of Bacolod for the clash.

The impact of the ongoing civil war in Yemen plus the distance from the Gulf state to the Philippines added to the internal travel required from Manila to Bacolod have left Mebratu and his team fighting fatigue even before the game kicks off.

“We are struggling from all the traveling,” said the Yemen coach. “Even from the capital Sana’a to Oman which was a very tough journey, that was by bus.

“Oman to Doha. Doha to Manila. Manila to Bacolod. A little bit challenging. This is because Sana’a airport is closed, that’s why we travelled such a long way. We had to face all these problems, but we will do our best to win tomorrow’s match.

“We have four points from the two matches. We didn't get the win against Nepal, but we’re still happy with one point because the players were struggling. They were fasting because it was Ramadan when we played Nepal.

“We are trying to keep our position. We will do our best to make history for Yemen. It would be a very big victory for the country. It will be the first participation of Yemen for the Asian Cup. Me and the players are struggling to make history.”

Yemen and the Philippines last met in November 2015 in the qualifying rounds for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with the Yemenis winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ahmed Al Sarori in that meeting in Manila.

We nearly lost this game. Those small but costly mistakes did us in. Next game is against you know who, Yemen. Need to play better.

Pretty bad game, Yemen took the lead all throughout the game, good thing the Azkals were able to catch up. But I felt that if the game had been held in Yemen, we likely would have lost.

Their speed is gave us problems, it goes to show how shallow our bench is at international level. Without Amani Aguinaldo and Daisuke Sato on defense, we really suffered.

By the way, TV5 is livestreaming all the Azkals games from hereon on their website, which is good news. They are also showing it on Aksyon TV, but the reception of that channel is pretty bad in our area.

Quantify what you meant by "their speed". I only saw 3 Yemen players who actually had pace. The rest of them sat back waiting for the Azkals to cheaply give away possession and it played into Yemen's hands pretty well because Dooley has fallen in love with the high pressing, high back-lined 4-3-2-1 with both fullbacks going forward and the only ones Yemen needed to beat were Villanueva who's a natural midfielder and De Murga who played some fullback under Weiss ages ago. Welcome to International football. Not having your best players available isn't an excuse for a poor performance.

It was practically 10 guys who played like 10 midfielders with no finishing skill in the final third (except Ramsay, Bahadoran was useless today) out there against Yemen. High pressing football teams are effective when they have at least 2 guys who can finish and their middle players can go from box-to-box very quickly. It's not the result that I'm disappointed about, it's how this team took that risk of high press/high line but the players not used to tracking back to defend every time they lost possession. Those set piece goals just highlighted the difference in individual quality (Phil's 40 yard free kick goal) and physical stature (James' header).

2-2 is a fair result. Yemen came to Bacolod with that game plan of tricking everyone including you that they're faster when all they did was defend-and-counter like an early 2000's African team. The Younghusband brothers and Neil Etheridge saved the Azkals from a home defeat.

I don't see the troika of J YH, P YH, and Etheridge being replaced anytime soon. Even if we qualify for the AFC, we won't be able to progress to the knockout rounds with this kind of team. Frankly speaking, we've had no strykers since the formation of this team. The two YH's are midfielders who had to play as forwards. Same with Bahadoran. I really miss those days with Ángel Guirado where he was able to finish via his headers.

Let's face it, we don't have a plethora of talents from the grassroots that can compete at this level. We're gonna be stuck with Fil-foreigners for quite some time.
