  • All Time Asian Basketball NAtional Team Rankings

    1 - China 16 gold medals, 1 silver medal, 2 bronze
    2 - Philippines 5 gold medals, 4 silver medal, 1 bronze
    3 - Iran 3 gold medals, 1 bronze
4 - South Korea 2 gold medals, 11 silver medal, 11 bronze medal
    5 - Japan 2 gold medals, 5 siilver medals, 7 bronze medal
    6 - Lebanon 3 silver medal
7 - Chinese Taipei 2 silver medal, 2 bronze medal

If we give precedence to gold medal, thats how the ranking looks like. But Both Japan and South Korea have been consistent in history.Iran has one more gold medal then Korea, but Korea finished top 3 24 times vs 4 times only for iran.

IIRC, majority of those medals were won when the PBA was founded in 1975 and china started participating.
No Pros allowed then, so philippines has to send young teams from collegiate and amateurs leagues until late 80's with exception of the team with imports(still, moore and engelland) .
However when pros were allowed china is already dominating asia with korea almost always the bridesmaid.
In the 90's philippines best pros were only allowed to participate in the asiad and not fiba asia.
Only in the 2000s' that pba commit to participate in fiba asia but still can't crack the top 4.
Middle eastern nations(iran, lebanon and jordan) become perennial contenders until the present time
now the philippines has climbed back again.

Well, Lebanon is relatively new to the scene. We started participating in 1999. So thats 8 participations ( 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2015) with 2013 being suspended by fiba.

      1999 - 7th position
      2001 - 2nd
      2003 - 4th
      2005 - 2nd
      2007 - 2nd
      2009 - 4th
      2011 - 6th
      2015 - 5th

True... It's only in the last 15 years that Lebanon became a basketball powerhouse in Asia...

Iran though have been much more impressive since they started in 2003 but have been a dominant force especially these last 8 years from 2007-2015
