SMB new boys Arana, Heruela step up as Beermen rout Alaska in tune-up

    From: Karlo Sacamos
    October 7, 2015, 05:58 pm

SAN Miguel Beer flaunted its depth and firepower as it overwhelmed Alaska, 101-84, in their tune-up game on Wednesday at the Hoops Center in Mandaluyong.

Even without "injured" stars June Mar Fajardo and Marcio Lassiter, the Beermen were in cruise control the entire game against the Aces in a rematch of two conference finals last season.

Alex Cabagnot led the Beermen with 19 points, while backup big man Jay-R Reyes added 13 markers as he stepped up in the absence of Fajardo.

SMB acquisitions Brian Heruela and Ryan Araña also made significant contributions, tallying 12 and eight points, respectively.

“Parang hindi sila nawala, kasi maraming nag-step up,” Beermen coach Leo Austria said.

Vic Manuel and Erik Menk registered 15 points apiece to pace the Aces, who also missed three Gilas standouts in Calvin Abueva, Dondon Hontiveros, and Sonny Thoss.

Still, the Aces tried to rally from a 20-point deficit, but the Beermen held on and built another comfortable lead.

Oh well. PBA Championships are still nothing compared to a chance to compete in the Olympics.

RSA knows Ginebra has more fans than Gilas Pilipinas. Heck Purefoods might also have more fans than Gilas...

They know their target market. And their target market does not really care about the national team. The whole hullabaloo with not lending their players will eventually be forgotten specially if one of the SMC teams, preferably Ginebra, wins a PBA championship.

Because college ballers are celebrities, plain and simple. Pretty much the reason why their game stagnates after staying too long in college ball. Masyadong nasilaw sa kinang ng pinilakang tabing.

Meralco scores morale-boosting preseason win over TNT side missing Gilas boys

                  From: Karlo Sacamos
                  October 10, 2015, 01:28 pm

MERALCO ripped shorthanded Talk ‘N Text, 106-95, in a tune-up game on Saturday at Meralco gym.

Gary David, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, and Kelly Nabong provided the spark off the bench for the Bolts against their sister team.

“When we play Talk ‘N Text, we always want to beat them, a little extra motivation,” Bolts forward Cliff Hodge said.

But Bolts coach Norman Black played down the rout, considering the Tropang Texters rested Gilas Pilipinas standouts Jayson Castro, Ranidel de Ocampo, and Matt Ganuelas-Rosser.

“I make nothing of it,” Black told Spin.ph after the game. “It’s just a scrimmage game, gives us the chance to practice our offense and defense. But it’s exhibition season. It doesn’t count.”

                  Hodge agreed.

“We won big, so at least it gives us confidence going into the conference that we can hang with the big guys, but I wouldn’t take too much from this.

Troy Rosario was among the Texters who delivered, but lamented how strict the referees were in calling fouls.

“Konting ano lang, foul agad,” said Rosario, who fouled out.

NLEX still too strong for Barako in tuneup despite absence of Taulava, Alas, Lanete

                      From: Snow Badua
                      October 10, 2015, 02:36 pm

DESPITE the absence of Asi Taulava and top recruits Kevin Alas and rookie Garvo Lanete, the NLEX Road Warriors easily disposed of Barako Bull, 110-97, in a tune-up game at the Green Meadows Gym on Saturday morning.

The Road Warriors banked on a well-balanced scoring led by veterans Sean Anthony, Mark Borboran with huge support from Eric Camson, Simon Enciso and John Sy Rios to open a 20-point lead with five minutes left.

Former Ginebra players Emman Monfort, James Forrester, Rico Maierhoffer, Josh Urbiztondo and Willy Wilson as well as young guard RR Garcia mounted a rally that pulled Barako within 12 points, 97-85.

The Road Warriors weathered the storm, but coach Boyet Fernandez still rued the teams tendency to relax after establishing a huge lead.

"Guys, we need to correct that, otherwise, sayang ang pagod natin sa laro. We can't give our opponents the chance to regain composure," Fernandez told his players in a final huddle.

The victory came after NLEX underwent a team-building session in Antipolo City. The team leaves for Cagayan De Oro on Sunday night for another round of fellowship.

Barako Bull coach Koy Banal, meanwhile, urged his players to learn from their mistakes. Banal also urged his second team to sustain the same tenacity as the starting unit.

The loss was Barako's first loss in the preseason after wins over Qatar and Meralco and a draw with Mahindra. The Energy also had a fight-marred game against the Jordan national team that was left unfinished.

Star settles for another draw in tune-up as SMB's Chris Lutz beats buzzer with putback

                        October 10, 2015, 04:37 pm

STAR failed to protect a late lead as it settled for a 97-97 draw against San Miguel Beer in their tune-up game on Saturday at Ronac Gym.

The Hotshots held a five-point cushion inside the last three minutes but allowed the Beermen to make a comeback capped by a Chris Lutz putback at the buzzer.

“Another freakin’ draw,” Hotshots wingman Alex Mallari told Spin.ph after the game as his team could also manage only an 83-83 draw against Alaska last week, before nipping NLEX, 75-73, last Tuesday.

“It’s good, though,” Mallari, who didn’t see action in their last game for coming in late, was quick to add. “We got a nice little tempo going. I think it’s our best offensive game of the preseason, so that’s all good. But defense, we got a lot to work on. Overall, C average.”

Justin Melton registered a game-high 18 points while James Yap added 17, the last two on a jumper that gave the Hotshots their last taste of the lead at 97-95.

Lutz, though, spoiled the party as he scored off an Alex Cabagnot missed three-pointer on the other end.

Cabagnot and Ronald Tubid tallied 15 points apiece to lead the Beermen.

the last thing i want to see in the pba( aside from farm teams and salary cap violation) are touch fouls! As if the recent smb snub isnt enough to turn fans away from the league. The reason i still watch the pba is mainly the drama that goes along with the game. The hard fouls , asaran is a part of pinoy basketball. Wag gawing Nba yung laro.

aside from that, physical plays makes us who we really are, its a part of being a filipino baller. we will never produce a player like ping, abueva, and their predecessor with nba type calls.

In addition, a lot of non-basketball fans watch the games mainly for school spirit lols. I mean, do you often see 5 year old girls wildly cheering for a PBA team? Yep, didn't think so.

i hope not only the final 12 will be given recognition come the PBA opening on Oct 18 but also all players who attended the 1st day of practice especially Kelly Williams.

“Hindi ko na inaano ‘yun (mapasama sa pool) eh,” Santos said. “Kung susumahin mo ang buhay naming mga player, ‘san ba talaga ang first priority namin, ‘di ba? Ang first priority ko, dahil dito ko nakuha lahat ng kagandahan ng buhay ko at para sa pamilya ko, ang San Miguel. Alam naman ng lahat ‘yun. Ito ang dapat kong paglingkuran.”
