Just save a ton of cash by holding a best-of-three series between the UAAP champion and NCAA champion. Anyway, that's probably what the organizers and the TV network want to achieve with their very unfair system of play.
Nothing beats the time-tested format of March Madness in the American NCAA. Who does not want to see an obscure school from a faraway province come in and embarrass a Metro Manila school with the best players money can buy.

so now they have a new format? instead of a final four its an elite eight format? duh, why not just stick with one format - the one loss you're out format. why do i have a feeling that certain quarters are adjusting the format of this tournament to favor a certain "league"?

The best format remains the 2003 format, the very first staging of this tournament. It was a straight knockout bracket of 16 schools but the championship was extended to a best-of-three instead of a winner take all showdown.
Also, there was no discrimination as provincial schools University of Baguio, University of the Visayas, University of San Jose-Recoletos and University of Mindanao were automatically entered together with the likes of Las Pinas College, Philippine School of Business Administration, Saint Francis of Assisi and University of Manila. The only red mark was the refusal due to various reasons of top NCAA and UAAP schools to participate thus giving up their slot to lesser-ranked teams from their leagues.
I also remember the issue once raised that some teams do not show respect to the tournament by playing in their practice uniforms!
