  • Should we change the format of the world cup?

Spain had a tough time competing in Group A . We may not see it , but facing against high-tier teams again and again would wear them down even if they look perfect.
USA on the other hand was in a group with minnows like Finland, Ukraine, New Zealand and DR.. Also, it is boring seeing one team playing against a few other teams.

Keep the 4 groups...but let the top 3 of each group advance into the 2nd group stage.

    2nd group stage:
Have 2 groups of 6 teams each, top 4 of each group advance to the quarterfinals.

    Elimination round:
    Start from the quarterfinals...

How about something like that? Longer group stages means that the fans will stay around longer to support the home team, more revenue.
Also, there is less variance where a potentially top team get kicked out from the round of 16 or quarterfinals...

i think they should keep the current format just balance the two opposite sides better. don't rely on the silly fiba team ranking system, use common sense.

They are changing it in 2019 to be like the soccer world cup, with 8 groups of 4 teams.

For a 24-team tournament, my preferred format would have been for just have 3 teams per group advance and then have a 12-team knockout stage, it would make the first round more interesting by reducing the number of teams that are total locks to advance, and by providing a bigger reward for winning the group. Having a second group stage after five group games in the first round is boring, IMO, and means too many games.

Next system is already confirmed to be 32 teams 8 groups of 4.

Really the only reason this year's was bad was because group A was stacked. The only reason Group A was stacked was Brazil needed a wild card to get in and Serbia was the last non wild card european team to get in. Completely messed up the seeding they had.

after giving the subject some thought, they should go to ryder cup format.
team europe, americas (excluding the usa obviously), africa, and asia, oceania and usa.
6 total teams you play each team twice= 10 total games each, best record wins.
usa would still be favorite but at least more competitive.

Quarter-Finals: 8 teams playing each other, in case of Brazil, don't playing against Spain, Serbia and France again, loading previous results. The same to the other groups.

Brazil was seeded with other FIBA America teams, while Serbia with other Europeans. It had basically nothing to do with wildcards. While the only thing that really messed up the tournament was changed play-offs system, and I don't care if Lithuania benefited out of that, it's just stupid

Every tournament regardless of number of teams should be like this.4 teams groups, top 2 qualify and then knock out stages begin.FIFA has it right,FIBA europe had it right as well from 2001 to 2005.This system with numerous group stages matches(8 in previous 2 eurobaskets!) was just idiotic and meant ton of meaningless games and thankfully FIBA europe ditched it.If FIBA copies FIFA's WC format it'll be a welcome change even though i got my doubts.

FIBA will be doing a better job from now on. Less games, but more important ones. And also less tournaments. This is what players actually want. And since more players will come, the fans will tune in as well.

Also, what I think is very important is that there will be separate qualifications for the World Cup which are not based on the final results of continental tournaments. As we've seen many times, teams could have a bad tournament, but that doesn't mean they are bad teams.

A bit ot but volleyball world championship is also takin place these days in Poland. This tournament's format makes FIBA ones look logical. An absolute monstrosity.24 teams take part and then there are 3 group stages(!!!) until the semis.Teams that will reach the semis will have to play 13 games in 3 weeks.Tournament started the same day as FIBA's and will end a week later.

The last group stage on the Volleyball WC is unnecessary.
I like double group stage format. If that was the format here, Serbia wouldn't advance the group, groups A and B would merge and C and D (though the merger of C and D would be horrible as you know, Serbia wouldn't pass the group but Dominican Republic would, no disrespect to Dom. Rep just repeating how group A was a fluke). After that the q-finals, Spain, France, Brazil and Greece would go on (Greece would have to win against BRA or FRA not to end as fourth, it would be GRE or FRA on the 4th place), on the other side, USA, Lith, Slo, and maybe even Turkey. SPA drops Tur, USA drops GRE/FRA, BRA drops SLO and FRA/GRE drop Lit. SPA plays FRA/GRE, USA plays BRA and there you go, you have the beautiful SPA vs USA final, with FRA/GRE/BRA taking the bronze.

In basketball the 4 teams x 8 groups format sucks a bit for me. Because it will be so hard to make anywhere equal strength groups when there is only 4 teams in a group. Especially with the broken FIBA rankings and stuff. The double group format was much better as even if you got a weak group, the one with which you merge will have some of the better teams and you will have to get over those teams to achieve going to the KO round.

Exactly. Let's not get crazy here. It was just an odd year the way the teams stacked up against each other.

So Team USA would be a favorite among teams that had the best players from their entire continent, all of whom were hungrier and better coached?

Dear lord you've got some rose colored glasses.

                          A format like this:

teams of brazilian group playing against 4 teams of greece group, with results create a new group where the four best go to the quarter finals, the same on quarter finals... semi and final can still the same of today.

Has FIBA decided what happens after the group stage of 8x4 teams? I'm thinking they will take top 3 from each group and pair them up so there is 2nd group stage with 4x6 at which point it's like the current format except you carry over games from 1st group stage. After this 16-team knockout rounds. This will result in 1 more game being played before knockout round.
Doing it just like FIFA where 2 teams from each of the 8 groups go to knockout stage would not be to my liking. Not as many games against better teams before knockout round and far fewer games overall.

Heck yeah! Make USA play everybody in that climb the tower style format, like Mortal Combat. If the US wins, they get gold. If the World wins they get gold.
