Even UP has finally put the finishing touches on the long-mothballed practiced gym that straddles the sidewalk along Commonwealth. Imagine what could happen if Robina Gokongwei-Pe starts to do an MVP or ECJ, or if Villar decides to chip in. Both can very well afford it.

NCAA schools are doing the same. Lyceum's gym is still relatively new (1998?), while EAC's sits on top of a 14-storey building. Mapua, for all their recent failures, is in the middle of renovating their gym as well. The key is to keep on investing -- capex as opposed to opex.
its not a question whether Gokongwei's pocket is deep enough, the question is whether UP is willing to accept contributions from donors, the faculty union for one has been against this, out of fear of commercialization

and i support UP in this...things have to change and i still believe the collegiate sports scene, heck the Philippines, will change in our lifetime...someone just has to start that change. yes, a governing body is a good start...who to put there? well, i'd volunteer...heck, if i get bribed ipakukulong ko pa yun aside from penalizing the player he is representing. I know of numerous credible and trust worthy auditors who will place their values over money.

i have read the issue of the us ncaa...the latest one was johnny manziel's properties being auctioned for charity (yeah, way to go us ncaa). still, i don't see the reason why the student-athletes should receive a piece of the profit. johnny football was penalized for that btw...he was banned for the first half of their first game.hahaha

watta game from 2 of the best hs program in the country.

Staglets beat Red Cubs in triple overtime to clinch PSSBC crown
        via: spin. ph

FIVE-foot-7 guard Lorenzo Fernando Navarro came through with a triple-double performance as San Sebastian College outlasted NCAA five-time defending champion San Beda College in triple overtime, 108-102, in the 2nd Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) Saturday at the SGS Gym on Araneta Ave. Quezon City

Bucking a poor start, Navarro tallied 32 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists to produce the league’s first triple-double performance and help the Staglets snap San Beda’s 27-game winning run counting its 20-game sweep of the NCAA championship.

He was at his best in the third extra period when he engineered the team’s decisive breakaway with two triples, which proved huge enough to take the fight out of the Arvin Toletinto-less San Beda. He finished with eight in the third overtime to win the Final MVP plum in the tournament in the tournament sponsored by Welcoat Paints, Hapee Toothpaste, Ever Bilena, MEC Computer, Wrangler, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Ironcon Builders, Dickies Underwear, Davies Paint and Spray & Seal Tire Sealant and Rain or Shine.

Staglets advanced to the one-game title match by beating Hope Christian High School in the semis. Hope was the same team that beat the Staglets for the title last year.

SSC-R also somehow avenged its defeat to San Beda in the NCAA finals last year, while bagging the top prize of P50,000. League officials led by last year’s chairman Cecilio Pedro also donated P100,000 to the GMA Foundation to help the victims of super typhoon Yolanda.

Hope Christian salvaged some measure of pride when it rallied to beat Mapua, 80-72, and take third place.

Rhanzelle Yong also had a monster game for San Sebastian with 26 points and 21 boards to go with three blocks while Ryan Costelo added 22 markers.

“This is for the players because they refuse to give up, they refuse to lose,” said coach Raymond Valenzona.

“Sinabi ko lang sa kanila na ang kalaban namin ang NCAA champion at mas maganda kung makukuha namin ito para may title rin kami. Kaya masaya ako lalo na dahil walong players ang mawawala sa amin,” he added.

“The triple overtime is a testament to the high level of game in the league,” said Edster Sy, the lead organizer of the tournament.

Without Tolentino, who was serving out his one-game suspension, Joshua Andrei Caracut carried the fight for San Beda with 30 points, including five treys. His back-to-back triples in the final 12.9 seconds capped a 15-5 run to send the game into first overtime at 75-all.

San Beda appeared headed for its 28th win that would highlight its big year when it took a 87-85 lead on Caracut’s triple. But Navarro rose to the occasion, scoring on a nice spin move to send the game into second overtime. The game was extended again for the third time when Caracut hit another triple.

Hey AU, I know Koy Banal did not live up to the hype but why replace him with Jerry Codinera?

The SBC Red Cubs are reportedly going to Gold Coast, Australia. I wonder if it is for a tournament or just a well deserved vacation.

San Beda played in Cebu last week minus its starters with the addition of a very promising under-the-radar recruit:

Red Lions rule Cebu City Mayor’s Cup

SAN Beda College Red Lions showed better end game poise and routed the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, 63-45, in the final game of the Cebu City Mayor’s Cup Inter-Collegiate Basketball tournament last Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.

UV’s downfall started in the second quarter when they could only deliver six points but allowed San Beda to score 14 points, putting the 4-time NCAA champs ahead by eight points, 31-23.

The Lancers managed to bring the deficit to four 33-29 at the 4:26 mark of the third period but a quick 9-1 blast put the Lions to a 12-point lead, 42-30, at the close of the third quarter.

UV tried to make a comeback in the early goings of the final period, but San Beda answered with two triples for a 52-34 lead halfway to the final buzzer.

The Lancers then launched their final attempt and John Abad anchored a 10-1 blitz that put UV closer 53-44 at the 4:23 mark. However, San Beda held the 10-time Cesafi champions without a field goal the rest of the way while scoring 12 straight points for the final count.

Interestingly, no San Beda player managed to score in double-digit with tournament MVP Fil-Australian Paul Anthony Semerad and Cameroonian Pierre Donald Tankoua topping with nine points each. Daryl Pascual and Mark Ivan Ludovice had eight points each to help the Red Lions stay unbeaten in three games and win the P50,000 champion’s prize.

Jean-Mari Mpouma scored the game high 14 points and Abad added 12 for the Green Lancers, who finished with a 1-2 win-loss for third place and pocketed P20,000.

The University of San Carlos Warriors copped the second place finish and the P30,000 cash prize with a 2-1 record, while the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars placed fourth and got P10,000.

San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez thanked the organizers for inviting the team to a competition that could toughen up his team in their search for their fifth straight NCAA title next season.

Mocon and D. Pascual are sure things. That leaves slots for 2 more. I'd love to give the slot to D. Nazareno for outside sniping and the hush-hush potential recruit for his potential.

Daryl Pascual will also officially graduate tomorrow. He’s a special big man who may be unknown to Manila basketball fanatics but he is the toast of the town in Pampanga. A future basketball idol.
