Chris Banchero top pick in PBA D-League draft; Ray Parks set to banner BDO-NU squad
InterAKTV · Thursday, September 19, 2013 · 3:25 pm
Former San Miguel Beer guard Chris Banchero emerged as the top overall pick in the first PBA D-League draft on Thursday after being selected by Boracay Rum.
Banchero, a Filipino-American guard from Seattle, spent the past two seasons with the Beermen in the ASEAN Basketball League. His D-League stint will allow him to fulfill eligibility requirements to join the PBA next season.
“He’s definitely the top of his class kaya hindi namin sasayangin ang pagkakataong naipagkaloob sa amin,” said Boracay Rum coach Lawrence Chongson.
Boracay Rum, originally slated to pick third overall, got the privilege to select first after the two teams ahead of them — Cafe France and Cebuana Lhuillier — decided to tie up with school varsity teams for the 2014 season of the D-League, which begins on October 24.
Cafe France will be bannered by standouts from Centro Escolar University, while Cebuana Lhuillier will be backstopped by players from University of the East.
Perennial powerhouse NLEX partnered with San Beda, while four other teams will also feature school-based lineups — Air 21 (Arellano University), M-Builders (Trinity University), UR Value (University of the Philippines), and BDO (National University).
Those teams skipped their chances to select in the first round of the draft.
Big Chill selected Perpetual Help super rookie Juneric Baloria with the second pick, while 6-foot-7 University of the Visayas center Andrew Avillanoza went to Blackwater with the third pick.
Cagayan Valley took Adamson forward Don Trollano with the fourth pick, while Hog’s Breath Cafe acquired Letran big man Ford Ruaya with the fifth selection.
Jumbo Plastic used the sixth pick on College of Saint Benilde star Mark Romero, while Wangs Basketball Team took Technological Institute of the Philippines stalwart Benedict Adamos seventh to round out the first round.
With their school tie-up, the BDO squad will be bannered by two-time UAAP Most Valuable Player Ray Parks of National University, which like the team is owned by the SM Group.
UE star Roi Sumang will lead the Red Warriors joining the Cebuana Lhuillier lineup, while Art dela Cruz tops the list of Red Lions coming into the NLEX roster.
CEU’s Joseph Sedurifa (Cafe France), Arellano’s Zachary Nicholls (Air 21), Trinity’s Rowell Maniago (M-Builders), and UP’s Raul Soyud (UR Value) lead their respective schools joining up with D-League squads.Ako si ma4ma before. Naging simple na lang po ako.
