    Earlier this year:

    N.Korea Suggests Regional Basketball Tournament

North Korea last month proposed to the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union an international basketball tournament involving both Koreas, China, and Japan.

An informed source on Friday said North Korean state broadcaster KRT proposed to the ABU that they jointly host a basketball tournament among national players from the four countries.

It seems Pyongyang made the proposal because North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is keen on basketball, as evidenced by his invitation to former U.S. basketball superstar Dennis Rodman and the Harlem Globetrotters to Pyongyang in March, the source added.

The ABU has been led by since 2012 by Kim In-kyu, the former president of KBS in Seoul. Asked by the Chosun Ilbo about Pyongyang's proposal, a KBS staffer seconded to the ABU Secretariat in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, said, "I can't give you details. But it's true that there were talks between the ABU and KRT. But no progress has been made in this regard."

He added that Kim In-kyu met KRT chairman Cha Sung-su in Pyongyang last year as they were discussing the price of broadcasting rights for the London Olympics for Pyongyang. "Since then, the ABU has been in contact with KRT once in a while."

During the London Olympics, KRT sent a crew of six to London for the first time in North Korea's history.

Established in 1964, the ABU is an international agency consisting of broadcasters in the Asia-Pacific region that promotes cooperation between members.
This may actually gain steam if South Korea's KBA is willing as well as China's CBA, Japan's JBA are interested. Earlier this year, the KBL chairman Hang Sung-Yo suggested a friendly basketball exhibition between the North and South Koreas.

This will be a very hostile tournament if for the SKORs and the Japanese if ever it will be held in Pyongyang. The home crowd has an ugly reputation of pelting the visitors whenever they would lose a match.

Rodman's visit and stay will push thru despite the recent news of Kim Jong-Un's regime executing the dictator's uncle.

Dennis Rodman personally handpicked the players who will play against a visiting team in January 8, 2014 composed of former NBA players. The tip-off is in celebration of dictator Kim Jong-Un's birthday.

Just to note, that was the halftime score. In the second half the teams were mixed.

Warmup game in China: China "B" 96-86 North Korea
CHN: Tao Hanlin 26, Hu Jinqiu 24
PRK: Kim Chang Myong 31, Choe RR 19, Kim CI 16

Observation: North Korea is no pushover. They are short but play very much like their southern brothers, hustle every possession, run fast breaks well, drive aggressively for open opportunities and chase down loose rebounds like animals. Also like South Korea they have great 3-point shooters all over the floor. I'm very surprised and impressed. They play zone and was able to disrupt the offense of the much taller Chinese by double-teaming bigs and blocking passing lanes, forcing a lot of turnovers.

North Korea had a 1 point lead after 3 quarters, but in the last quarter they had 2-3 players injured and 1-2 players foul out so they collapsed. Their injuries were not surprising because they were extremely aggressive on both ends, dive and battle for rebounds against players much taller and heavier, and they have a very short rotation (7 players before injuries). One of the injured players had a Charley horse for playing too long and too hard.

This China "B" will be playing in FIBA Asia Challenges so their performances can be used to gauge Team North Korea's level. Due to their severe lack of height North Korea is not elite in Asia especially since Asia has so many imports nowadays, but I think they are about 8th-10th if they play in FIBA Asia, with the ability to upset a top team if you take them lightly. However, if you are a top team and prepare for them they shouldn't be too much trouble. But that Kim Chang Myong guy is one hellava scorer.
