New faces, mega deals raise hope of banner season for pro league

FOLLOWING a lively offseason of wheeling and dealing that saw most of the 10 ball clubs retool their rosters, PBA commissioner Chito Salud is optimistic the pro league is headed for another banner year when it unveils its 38th season on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Salud believes the pro league is poised to break the more than P100 million in revenues it generated from gate receipts alone last season – thanks to more balanced lineups, new faces adorning the top teams, and the entry of blue-chip rookies this campaign.

“Our product is the game and the game is our product. We’re looking forward with excitement that we could build on the gains we had from last season,” beamed Salud during Wednesday’s press launch of the new season at the Diamond Hotel.

Salud said top overall rookie pick June Mar Fajardo, last season’s NCAA MVP Calvin Abueva, Fil-Americans Alex Mallari, Cliff Hodge, Chris Ellis and Keith Jensen, and former Smart Gilas standout Aldrech Ramos will bring added excitement to the pro league with their athleticism and youthful zeal.

“Our fans have clearly spoken. They want a fast-paced game and they want balanced competition. Year in and year out, they are also looking for rookies who will challenge the status quo. I feel these are the elements that we can build on for this coming season,” added Salud, who will be teaming up with incoming board chairman Robert Non.

The season will kick off with a colorful opening ceremonies beginning at 4:30 p.m., highlighted by a tribute to the Smart Gilas 2.0 team of coach Chot Reyes, which won the William Jones Cup last month, ending the country’s 14-year title drought in the Taipei tournament.

The lone game set at 6 p.m. will be between souped-up Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and newcomer Global Port, owned by sportsmans-businessman Mikee Romero.

In a bid to make the pro game more exciting and fast-paced, Salud has announced a couple of new rules, including one that will now allow a player who dives for a loose ball to slide on the floor without being whistled for a traveling infraction.

The son of former PBA commissioner Rudy Salud, explained that the new rule “gives credit to the hustle plays displayed by a player without nipping the fans’ excitement.”

The inter-intra format will be in place in the elimination round, with the 10 teamsdivided into two groups. Each team will play its group mates once and the teams in the other group twice.

Group A consists of Air21, Meralco, Petron Blaze, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and San Mig Coffee (formerly B-Meg Derby Ace) while Group B will be made up of defending Philippine Cup champion Talk ‘N Text, Alaska, Barako Bull, Rain or Shine and newcomer Global Port.

                The Dugout
PBA: Before Junmar, there was Bonel
                By Brian Yalung
                August 25, 2012, 11:16pm

Manila, Philippines - 20 years ago, the PBA welcomed into the league a man-mountain named Bonel Balingit. Back then, the 6-foot-9 behemoth drew attention mainly due to his large size and height, the tallest at that time in the Philippine Basketball Association.

Just last week, another big man officially entered the league. He is Junmar Fajardo, another 6-foot-9 center who hails from Cebu and had stints with the University of Cebu Webmasters and the San Miguel Beermen at the Asean Basketball League (ABL).

So what do these two behemoths have in common? Well they are joining powerhouse clubs and have their work cut out for them as far as expectations is concerned.

Unlike Fajardo (who was the top pick for the class of 2012), Balingit was drafted 11th in the 1992 PBA draft by the Swift Mighty Meaties then under coach Derrick Pumaren. Among the familiar names during that year included top pick Vergel Meneses (then drafted by Presto Ice Cream) who would later on become his teammate with Swift in the latter year of 1993.

In his rookie year, Balingit barely made some noise in the PBA. In fact, it was only in 1995 when Bonel made an impact, particularly in the 1995 PBA All-Filipino Conference.

Balingit played a pivotal role in game seven of the PBA All Filipino finals for the Sunkist Orange ballclub that year, combining with an ailing Vergel Meneses, Yoyoy Villamin and Ric-ric Marata to win in overtime, 87-78, over an equally talented Alaska Milk squad.

That year, Alaska had the likes of Jojo Lastimosa, Bong Hawkins, Jeffrey Cariaso and Johnny Abarrientos at the helm.

It was actually Balingit who sparkled in the extra period for Sunkist. Balingit flexed his muscles underneath and scored six of their first seven points in overtime as he joined hands with Marata to hand the RFM franchise their first All Filipino plum and 3rd PBA title.

In the 1995 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, Bonel copped his 4th title with the franchise as Sunkist once again defeated Alaska, 4-2 in the finals. Reinforcing them that year was Ronnie Grandison who would later on be adjudged Best Import of the Conference.

During the PBA awarding ceremonies, Balingit made it to the PBA mythical second team together with teammates Boybits Victoria and Nelson Asaytono. They were joined by Jojo Lastimosa (Alaska) and Alvin Patrimonio (Purefoods). Vergel Meneses was named the MVP that year.

But everything went haywire after that, and Bonel never went farther than what he achieved in 1995.

After that breakout year, it was all downward for Bonel as far as professional basketball was concerned. He did suit up for other teams like Tanduay and Purefoods but unfortunately the man-mountain was never able to improve on that showing after 10 years in the PBA.

Balingit’s last season was in 2002 and ever since, Bonel has been a fixture in comedy films and some TV sitcoms.

So what does this have to do with Fajardo? Well aside from joining powerhouse teams, it would be wise for Junmar to take into consideration Bonel’s PBA ride. And considering that Fajardo will have to go up against more taller PBA players compared to the time of Bonel, makes the task doubly harder too.

Although still young at the age of 23, Fajardo will have to work harder if he is to survive in the professional league. He may have shown his toughness in the ABL but the PBA is far more different and physical. So does Junmar have what it takes to survive with the PBA big (and bad) boys?

Fajardo is still young and can still evolve. Many have compare him to other greats but a large chunk of his success will be up to him. This means improving his game mentally and physically, something direly needed to survive in the PBA wars.

Balingit hit his stride 3 years after entering the PBA but nosedived thereafter. Injuries and distractions were partly to blame and Fajardo may do well to take heed of this behemoth’s career.

Either that or Junmar Fajardo would truly remain mythical, a Kraken which some have recently tied up with his name.

But at the ripe age of 23, Fajardo has a long way to go and with the guidance of veterans over at the Petron camp, it may be wise to take their advice seriously especially when it comes to the PBA brand of play.

What's interesting about this format is that the SMC teams are in one group and the "rivals" (or contenders) in the other group meaning we'll have two games each between SMC vs. ROS/TNT just in the elimination round.

Would have been nicer if the bracketing went this way:

Group A - Petron, Ginebra, San Mig Coffee, Global, Alaska
Group B - Meralco, TNT, ROS, Air 21, Barako Bull

The three SMC teams in one bracket with one independent franchise and another pseudo-SMC team. In Group B, you have two MPIC teams, two Lina teams and one independent team.

But it would have been nicer to make the teams within the same bracket play twice while playing the teams in the other bracket only once. But perhaps, they were trying to mitigate the risk of sister teams "giving" games to the sibling in need.

i think they arranged it by ranking from the last season's performance? #1 to Group A, #2 to Group B, #3 to Group A, etc... If i am not mistaken, then it's just a coincidence that the SMC sister teams found themselves as groupmates...
