Patriots to leave ABL? Of course not! -- Arejola
        August 23, 2012

AIRASIA Philippine Patriots, who have already made a big name for themselves in the Asean Basketball League, will still be around when the regional tournament unveils its 2013 season.

No less than team manager Erick Arejola made the assurance as he dispelled rumors of an impending disbandment of the team following Mikee Romero’s subsequent entry into the PBA after acquiring the Coca-Cola Bottlers’ franchise.

“Yes, tuloy ang Patriots,” Arejola was quoted as saying by Spin.PH yesterday.

Arejola is now serving as the head of basketball operations of Global Port Batang Pier, the Romero-owned team which took the place of Coca-Cola Bottlers PBA team Powerade.

At the same time, Arejola said they are in search for new head coach who will replace Glenn Capacio in a looming revamp in the Patriots’ wards.

Capacio, who handled the Patriots last season, has also been made interim coach of the Batang Pier, which is keen on putting up a strong competitive team for the PBA which kicks off its 38th season on Sept.30.

Arejola, who served as the Patriots team manager the past two seasons, said that Romero will only need to work out some management-related details with his partners Tonyboy Cojuangco and Tony Fernandez.

The Patriots, then still under coach Louie Alas, etched their names on the Asean Basketball League right on its inaugural season by winning the title in 2009-2010 at the expense of Satria Muda.

AirAsia Philippines went 9-6 in the regular season, won its semifinal series against Kuala Lumpur, but failed to sustain the momentum and eventually got swept by Chang Thailand Slammers in the finals.

The slide went unabated in the following season when, after finishing the regular season with a 16-5 win-loss card, they fell in ambush to eventual season champion Indonesia Warriors, 2-0, in the semis.

Gary David, last year’s top rookie pick JV Casio along with big man Rabbeh Al-Hussaini are the key holdovers of the Powerade Tigers who will now banner the Batang Pier along with first-round rookie picks Vic Manuel and Fil-Am Jason Deutchman.
If there is no basketball in heaven, i am NOT going.

        SMALLBALL, bitches..

Can GlobalPort make a splash in its first season?

              Gary David. Willie Miller.

That combination is enough to make GlobalPort, the PBA’s newest team, one of the most compelling as the season begins. The Batang Pier were able to land the two-time Most Valuable Player Miller in the big five-team trade but had to part ways with last year’s top pick, JVee Casio, to do it.
              Official Lineup

              No. Player
              0 Alfred Mandani
              1 Jason Deutchman
              2 Rabeh Al-Hussaini
              4 Rudy Lingganay
              5 Jondan Salvador
              7 Rey Francis Guevarra
              9 Marvin Cruz
              10 Rommel Adducul
              11 Willie Miller
              14 Mark Yee
              20 Gary David
              22 Joshua Vanlandingham
              24 Vic Manuel
              33 Angelus Raymundo
              Injured/Reserve
              34 William Antonio
              43 Alex Crisano

              Head Coach:
              Glenn Capacio

              Assistant Coaches:
Ricky Dandan, John Cardel, Louie Gonzales, Charles Tiu

“Losing JVee Casio was very painful for the team. Of course, we know his capabilities. But gaining Willie Miller, we wanted yung composition namin na mag-iba,” said GlobaPort team manager BJ Manalo. “Marami siyang nagagawa — he can play the 1, he can play the 2, we can also put him at the 3.

“We believe the combination of Gary David and Willie Miller is very hard to stop.”

During the draft, the Batang Pier also traded away forward Sean Anthony, who like Casio was one of the last remnants of the former Powerade franchise’s finals run in last year’s Philippine Cup. In return, they were able to get rookie Vic Manuel, who is now expected to play a major role for GlobalPort.

And with several other capable players like Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra on board, the Batang Pier front office is confident that they’ll be more than just a two-man team. The team will be relying on David and Miller, two proven scorers, to not only get their usual numbers on the stat sheet but to provide easier opportunities for their teammates as well.

“Definitely, we’re looking at our two superstars, Gary and Willie, but pinag-uusapan namin is how they can make their teammates better. For us, the standard of being a superstar is how much you make your teammates better.”

Manalo believes that the team will need to stand out in at least one category – teamwork – if they want to be competitive.

“Hindi kami masyado malakas compared sa other teams, we are honest about that,” he said. “So we are expecting more from one another. We want GlobalPort to play as one. And I think yun ang magiging strength namin, playing as a team.”

                  hmmm....

is it a case of coincidence or coach baculi heeded the advice of the analysts in this FTW segement?

this was shown after Global Port's 2nd game. In their 3rd game (against BGK), Mark Yee started, while Willie Miller came off the bench.

                    another won game lost!!!

the loss to barako bull was because of turnovers and unbelievably hot 3-point shooting from barako.

the loss today to meralco is because of a miracle shot from sunday off a broken play.

global port could have been 4-1 now, with the only convincing loss against a well-prepared talk n text game plan.

hay... as they say, bilog ang bola.

trade miller for a pick and let the role players do the rotation as their sixth man.
We can have no progress without change, whether it be basketball or anything else
