  • Mikee Romero's Global Port, Inc.

Why have they suddenly gone cold in the media and the news? Are they really joining this coming season or not?

Can they elevate any amateurs directly?

  • #2
As per PBA rules, having bought an existing franchise, they are not allowed to elevate amateur players directly. However, they can request for such from the PBA Board, a concession that was given by the Board to Welcoat in 2006 when they joined the league after buying the Shell franchise. But there's a reason why the PBA Board allowed this - it was because Shell's lineup has been decimated on account of previous deals that saw players like Rich Alvarez, Ronald Tubid, Celino Cruz and Tony Dela Cruz playing for other teams. With Global Port practically inheriting a complete lineup from the Powerade Tigers, I don't think the Board will easily be convinced to be given such privilege. Especially considering the likely players they can evaluate are potential marquee players - those that are being eyed from day one by a lot of PBA teams.

In principle, what Global Port will have is exactly what Powerade will be getting. If Powerade has a draft pick, they inherit that selection. But they can make a request to the Board if they can get a pick from the draft assuming they have no first round pick this season. Again, it's a long shot but Romero can test the goodwill of the Board by asking for such.

I just find it weird that the season is about to start in 2months and there's barely anything in the news about them when the main purpose of joining the PBA is exposure.

So I guess everything will be intact except for the new guys they will be getting from the draft. At least the line-up is better than Air21.

There's also no news on whether or not Mikee has withdrawn from the ABL.

There is an unwritten rule in PBA.. that the new members of the board expansion team or buy an existing franchise shall pay their dues..thats why the cost of buying an existing franchise is much much bigger than an expansion team as aside from buying the franchise you also have to pay the membership fee..

Mikee must have a lot of money (ahem backer) to do this move as sir JPM had said

Yes, Air 21 would give up a lot just to have Powerade's roster. But that's a different story.

It's pretty normal. The sale was just confirmed over a week ago and we were in the middle of a Finals series between B-Meg and ROS. Timing is extremely crucial when a team owner like Romero would want to make sure that his activity is reported well in the press. Romero would be prudent not to compete against the Finals for attention. Instead, it's best he waits until the Finals end (which happened last night) and then make the moves starting today, ensuring that media would be kept in the loop at all times. Besides, Romero is in London as President of the shooting association. He should be expected back in Manila later this week.

Just to clarify Ream, the rule is if an investor buys an existing franchise, the only money he has to cough up is the cost of the franchise as declared by the selling team. It was reported that Powerade's franchise cost is P60M so that was the only payment made by Global Port paid to Powerade (and not the PBA).

On the other hand, had Global Port decided to join the PBA as an expansion team by buying a new franchise, then they need to pay the franchise fee to the PBA worth P60M (same price of Powerade's franchise). In essence, Global Port got a good deal by paying for the same amount as the franchise fee but was able to secure the Powerade roster made up of marketable players like Gary David, JVee Casio, Sean Anthony, Josh Vanlandingham, Rabeh Al-Husseini, Rey Guevarra, among others.

I see.. so afterall it is a bargain price as the team is already competitive.. they did not have to go what Ros and Meralco have gone through..(almost starting the team from scratch)

Had SLR didn't give up Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes, that would have been a very expensive team to buy. Lest not be forgotten, Dennis Espino, Joseph Yeo and Denok Miranda used to be with the team as well but were traded prior to the sale. Otherwise, Meralco would have shelled up a little bit more.

Welcoat got Shell at a relatively bargain price of P30M if I'm not mistaken. This was because the lineup was decimated and didn't have any valuable materials. And even if the PBA allowed them to elevate three of their players in the PBL (JayR Reyes, Junjun Cabatu, Jay Sagad), they still didn't have enough materials for them to be competitive. Ultimately, because they got top draft picks along the way, they were able to get the likes of Gabe Norwood, Sol Mercado, Jervy Cruz and Paul Lee.

I do see ROS a solid team but heck the team is build for 6 years already.. Jason Webb said it right if they not win this conference the question will linger to the minds of Raymon Yu and Terry Que..

Is this Global similar to the one Azkals team manager Dan Palami is involved with?
