Head coach Kimikazu Suzuki said that the Jones Cup on which his team finished with a 3-5 record was a learning curve. He commended Kosuke Takeuchi for being the most consistent among his peers.

While in the other game, Anyang KGC head coach Lee Sang-Beom noted that the Japanese team is still a work in progress that is finding their identity with each game. Lee said that KGC's victory over Japan is no gauge on how Japan will fare against the Korean national team.

Meanwhile, Joji Takeuchi will be re-evaluated for next week.

Does this Hagop rule applies only in Asia? What if Japan qualifies in FIBA world, will he be considered a local?

He was re-evaluated and yet no news. We will see if he attends the next scheduled practice and that will be an indicator.

hinkley and sakuragi together? i guess it means hinkley is considered a local? very young team and not very different from the jones cup team. even if they're the home team, they'll be hard-pressed to finish in the top 3...

The good news is that the front-court has depth and the likes have not seen since 2005-06. The bad news is that the back-court lacks two mainstays, Kawamura and Ishizaki.

Joji Takeuchi was listed out due to his nagging injury. Kosuke Hashimoto was added to the final lineup as a replacement for Takeuchi. The Hitachi SunRockerz management also have appealed about their star's injury to the JBA panel.

Thats why JR is there. for insurance as if Joji is 100%. I expect Japan not to field him anyway.

^^ Wrong. Kimikazu Suzuki had Hashimoto on standby as a precaution to J.Takeuchi's condition as the tourney approached. Sakuragi was put in place due to Suzuki wanting to run the old inside triangle that he employed when Aishin SeaHorses had Kosuke Takeuchi and JR Sakuragi were still teammates.

Judging from practice, they still have that chemistry.

JPN - Joji’s left ankle leaves Japan’s plans sprained for FA Cup

TOKYO, Japan (4th FIBA Asia Cup): Hosts Japan’s hopes of an impressive showing at the 4th FIBA Asia Cup starting on Friday received a serious jolt with their star forward Joji Takeuchi ruled of any action in the competition after his left ankle flared up with a sprain.

The hosts are most likely to bring Tokai University forward the yet unblooded Kosuke Hashimoto as the replacement for the one half of the Takeuchi twins, who incidentally will miss the Japan NTfor the first time since he made his debut at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan.

The other Takeuchi – Kosuke – thus will now have to shoulder the responsibility of leading Japan without the support of his twin, which might have come very handy.

Japan are drawn with twice former FIBA Asia champions Iran, winners of this event in its inaugural edition in 2004 when it was called the FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup Qatar, East Asia’s Chinese Taipei and India in Group A of the Prelim round competition at the 4th FIBA Asia Cup.

Japan begin their campaign on Friday with a game against Qatar. Click here for complete schedule of 4th FIBA Asia Cup.

Kimikazu Suzuki will miss the presence of Joji-kuun. To think they were actually counting on Joji to be a zone buster of some sorts by directly playing behind the zone defenses that other teams will employ. Though Joji is not an established post player, he was still effective on instances of:

                            1. Middle ball reversal or skip passes.
                            2. Set a middle screen for the block teammate recipient.
                            3. Middle post -- wired to shoot or attempt at the basket.

Though his twin Kosuke could assume that role, it's just that Joji shoots much better.

Joji Takeuchi and other JBL stars will be watching the games in the Asia Cup to show support. Joji-kuun said in an interview with Bzine.jp that it was difficult in missing this tourney but he said he will play for next year's world cup qualifiers.

In the last tournaments I followed Joji Takeuchi. Two things only happened one is that he sat out the tournament cause he is injured and the other that he plays but suddenly will sit out in the end due to injury.
