Japan is off to a good start after a hearty win over Qatar, who is now mentored by Tom Wiseman. Kimikazu Suzuki used Aishin's double power system to counter the lane filling defense employed by Wiseman. It was a good call or a gambit, Wiseman knows the tendencies of the mainstays of the national team.

It showed that a zone is also susceptible to inside operation and manually playing at its rear to open flash, ball reversal and looping advantages.

Suzuki let K. Takeuchi and Sakuragi manually operate in the elbows and low block for this one. Also, the absences of Kawamura, Ishizaki and J. Takeuchi was a blessing in disguise as Wiseman could have devised a strategy on that potential unit. Instead, Suzuki let Kanamaru and Takashiro to shoot in the field.

What worked also was Takatoshi's jump and shoot game borne out of his off-ball reading via the V-Cut.

Japan avenging their blowout lost against Chinese Taipei in the recent Jones Cup with a 90-78 win. Kimikazu Suzuki motivated his boys with that said loss as his Aishin boys JR Sakuragi, Takatoshi Furukawa and former Aishin Kosuke Takeuchi all produced in the stretch.

Also worthy of mention are Daiki Tanaka and Kosuke Kanamaru, who shot less but converted better as they are more patient this time around in their shot selection.

Still the disappointment is Ryota Sakurai who has struggled since last month. Though he is dedicating himself to the defense, he seems lost in the offensive scheme of things. At 29, it seems the small forward of the future plaque will go to Takahiro Kurihara and Kosuke Kanamaru.

From the Hayabusa Booster pages, it seems the quality of the NT jersey has improved. These merchandise are far better than those of the 2006 FIBA WC that I regret buying.

Sean Hinkley now known as "Shun Ichioka" or Sean Ichioka as what JR Sakuragi calls him.

Japan will win this one. Though they had trouble defending India's Bhriguvanshi and co. during the first half. The Japanese were just a step late for the coverage and India kept hitting shots to end the first half.

Japan used the second half with the production of Kosuke Kanamaru (26 points so far) (7/9 3pts) and JR Sakuragi providing the scoring. Finally a good offensive game from Ryota Sakurai with 12 points (and counting).

Kosuke Takeuchi helped control the tempo in the second half. He has now has 15 rebounds as the game dwindles down.

            EDIT:

            Japan wins 90-72.

The next scorer in the mold of Takuya Kawamura is here in Kosuke Kanamaru. Fearless shooting range and has a much better triple-threat game leading to either shoot or make a drive attempt.

The next concern is finding the next in line for the Takeuchi twins. Looking at the ranks of the JBA Elite Big Man program, no center is in the mold of a young Fumihiko Aono. Harimoto and Hashimoto are developing nicely though.

The hosts, Japan once again pulling a win over Qatar to barge into the finals. Kimikazu Suzuki's boys of Kosuke Takeuchi, JR Sakuragi and Takatoshi Furukawa again delivering against the team coached by Tom Wiseman.

Much to the delight of the fans, the team has been lucky so far.

Takatoshi Furukawa might not be as streaky as Kanmaru but maybe he is a good complement to Takuya Kawamura, still the ace Japanese player

With the disclosure of the 2013 Basketball Calendar, the availability of professional players that composes the national team to be sent to the 6th East Asian Games (Oct. 6-15, 2013) needs to be addressed.

The Japanese NBL tips off in late September next year and the league in its maiden season, is not likely to arrange a week-off from the schedule as several quarters said that it will halt the momentum that they have been building since early this year.

Some suggestions imply that the non-professionals in the expanding Hayabusa National Team Player Pool should suit up for the East Asian games. Names like Ryogo Sumino and Yuta Watanabe to spearhead the said endeavor seems imminent. Young players are being groomed this early for the 2016 Rio Olympics endeavor.

We'll see on how this plays out.

Aslo, sports-writers have also expressed concerns over the NBL's flexibility in accommodating FIBA's new World Cup Qualifiers for 2019 that has Home and Away formats (TBD) for November 2017, February 2018, June 2018, September 2018, November 2018 and February 2019.

Ryota Sakurai has been playing well this season despite Hokkaido's lowly record. I have seen him play point guard as a stretch role and Hokkaido's coach took a cue from Sakurai's point guard role in the Jones Cup etc. Sakurai's assists numbers are up in the JBL.

With Takumi Ishizaki's availability for next year and Sakurai being able to discover his point guard game, both could be alternating as the team's point guard combo. Ishizaki (6'2) and Sakurai (6'4) eliminates Japan's long history of undersized point guards.

The emergence of youngsters Daiki Tanaka, Makoto Hiejima and Takahiro Kurihara have secured Japan's SF rotation. While there are plenty of picks for the SG position in Takuya Kawamura, Kosuke Kanamaru, Taiji Sakai and Takatoshi Furukawa; allowing Sakurai, the team veteran to slide down and play point guard. Sakurai guarding bigger forwards has always been problematic for him, but against guards, he fares better.

That said, for third stringer point guards, Taishi Ito, Keijuro Matsui and Hironori Watanabe should still be in the running for consideration.

With national team prospect Yuki Togashi signing with Akita in the BJ-League, that's another notch for the BJ-League. Togashi joins the likes of Atsuya Ota and former BJ-League player Takumi Ishizaki in the national pool.

I would probably consider another name in the prospect pool: Tokyo CinqReves forward Akihito Inoue, a 6'7 hardworking forward. But Sean Hinkley alongside Kosuke Hashimoto in tow, chances are very slim for Inoue.

Bamba Diouf leads Nobeoka Gakuen to the 2012 JX-Eneos Winter Cup title. This is the second time that NG won the tourney. Diouf had 25 points and 16 rebounds to lead his team in topping this all HS tourney.

National team head coach Kimikazu Suzuki was all praise for national team member Makoto Hiejima this morning when news broke out that Aishin got a commitment to sign from Hiejima in the J-NBL. Suzuki said that he envisions Hiejima as the budding star of the future and a corner stone of Aishin sea horses. Suzuki also said in Hoopzine that Hiejima will play multiple positions for the 2013 FIBA Asia World Cup Qualifiers.
