New Jersey Nets Are Now Officially the Brooklyn Nets

On Friday, the NBA's Board of Governors unanimously approved the New Jersey Nets' relocation to Brooklyn. NBA commissioner David Stern stated on Friday at a press conference, "We voted to formally approve the move, and the team name." Stern also praised the Nets' new home by saying that it was "an impressive building." The Nets' will be moving to the Barclays Center, which is almost finished being built.

The building is expected to be finished on time, as early as August, and will be opening on September 28 if everything goes according to plan. Sales of tickets and suites for next year's season are reportedly selling very well. Construction of the building began on March 11, 2010 and the building has cost over $1 billion so far. The Barclay Center is massive and is expected to hold up to 18,103 Nets fans.

Team owners Prokhorov and Bruce Ratner have released a statement saying, "We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to David Stern and the NBA team owners for their role in making the Nets' move to Brooklyn a reality. Barclays Center will give Nets a state-of-the-art new home and, together, we will give Brooklyn the great sports and entertainment experience it so deserves." The Nets, who have already been eliminated from this year's playoffs, are looking for a fresh start next season. The relocation will give the Nets a new face with a new building, new fans, and new excitement. With so much anticipation for next year's season, the Nets have to make sure that they follow through on the most important aspect of the game, which is playing good ball.

After 35 years in New Jersey (1977-2012) the Nets are moving to Brooklyn, New York. They will be opening in the new Barclays Arena for the 2012-2013 NBA Season.

New Jersey Nets seek home improvement with move to Brooklyn

The Nets hope their move to a new arena in Brooklyn next season will revitalize the moribund franchise.

NEWARK, N.J. -- The Heat played its 97th and final game against the New Jersey Nets on Monday.

Although the Nets are celebrating their 35th season in the Garden State, there will not be a 36th. When the Nets visit Toronto for their season finale on April 26, it will mark the final game before the franchise moves to New York and re-brands itself the Brooklyn Nets.

For a franchise that has struggled on the court the past few years, the move couldn’t come soon enough. The Nets’ final game in New Jersey is April 23 against the Philadelphia 76ers. One week later, the name change becomes official complete with a new logo and colors.

“This is a transformative move, something we’ve waited seven years for,’’ said Nets CEO Brett Yormark, the twin brother of Panthers president Michael. “Newark has been great to us, and the Prudential Center has been terrific. But there’s no comparing this to Brooklyn.

“If it wasn’t a borough, it would be the fourth largest city in the U.S. It’s a great place for us moving forward.”

The Nets escaped the aging Izod Center at the Meadowlands two years ago and temporarily moved to the Prudential Center in downtown Newark waiting for the new building.

The Nets soon will go from being a renter at an arena that is most definitely not theirs — it’s impossible to sit in the arena and not know the New Jersey Devils are the primary tenant — by moving into a spectacular building in a thriving, hip neighborhood.

The $1 billion Barclays Center is currently rising above the Long Island rail yard near where Walter O’Malley wanted to build his Dodgers a stadium. That didn’t happen — O’Malley was denied the land and offered Queens instead — and the Nets become the first major professional sports team to call Brooklyn home since the Dodgers left Ebbets Field for Los Angeles after the 1957 season.

“We have a built-in fan base. People have been waiting since 1957 for this,” Yormark said. “There’s a nostalgia factor. We’re excited. It’s going to be a destination in the region, and we can’t wait to call it home.

“We have been here 35 years and need to leave New Jersey the right way. I think we’re doing that, giving back as much as we can. But the next chapter starts next season.”

With deep-pocket owners Mikhail Prokhorov, Bruce Ratner and hip-hop entertainer Jay-Z (who opens the new building with a concert Sept. 28), the Nets hope to create new excitement upon moving into their new palace.

Brooklyn, they hope, will become a destination point for NBA players. But even the Nets know a new look and a fancy new arena won’t cure all their ills. But it’s a pretty good start.

“It’s something we’re all looking forward to,” coach Avery Johnson said. “As much as we talk about the building — and the Barclays Center is going to be a state-of-the-art building and a great place to play — we’re going to have to put a really good team on the floor.”

Even though the Nets are celebrating their time in New Jersey, some of the team’s biggest success (the Nets did play in the 2002 and ’03 NBA Finals) came while playing on Long Island as the New York Nets back in the ABA days. Last Friday, the NBA’s Board of Governors officially paved the way back to New York by unanimously approving the move.

It will be strange not calling them the New Jersey Nets anymore.

“This will be an exciting opportunity for the entire organization,” said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, whose father Jon worked as an executive with the Nets in the 1990s.

“Players are looking forward to it. The opposing teams will look forward to it as well.”

Deron Williams stated last March that he will opt out on the final year of his contract to test the waters of free agency. Now an opening night at the Barclays Arena will feel less optimistic if Williams is no longer around. Some pundits point that Williams is bound to sign with the Dallas Mavericks.

Players I would like to be back with the Brooklyn Nets next year:

Deron Williams - Nets need their franchise player. Chances are that Williams could sign with the Dallas Mavericks.

Gerald Green - Green's return with the Nets and in the NBA had made an impact. He put on an athletic show for the home crowd. Glad to see him back after years on playing abroad and several stints in the D-League. His callup was a career rebirth.

Kris Humphries - The Nets would benefit in signing him for medium term. They need Humphries.

Brook Lopez - After being extremely limited this season, I hope he bounces back into his productive form.

I agree with the idea of relocating but not where they're going. They needed to relocate. I heard that even at home, the fans were cheering for the away team. They didn't have a fanbase. Only problem, they're relocting to Brooklyn. Everybody's hearts are sold out to Melo and the Knicks. Unless they keep D-Will and pick up Dwight Howard they're going to have even less fans. That's my opinion on this relocation.

I cannot verify the authenticity of this news piece, but I'll try asking around tomorrow.

Kirilenko has deal in place with Nets if he decides not to return to CSKA

If Andrei Kirilenko isn’t wearing a Brooklyn Nets all-black-everything jersey next season, the beef from the borough can be thrown toward one team. And it won't be another NBA team like the Utah Jazz, Orlando Magic or even the Sacramento Kings, which have all been linked to the Russian small forward over the past eight months.

That distinguished honor belongs to CSKA Moscow, where Kirilenko signed last October and has represented Russia all the way to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four that tips off next week in Istanbul, Turkey. While you won't see the CSKA-Panathanaikos semi-finals played on flatscreens or Barclays Center jumbo-trons 5,000 miles away, Nets season ticket holders and the anxious fan base might want to pay attention. That's because two teams' future will be at stake at the Final Four: CSKA Moscow and the Brooklyn Nets.

Over the course of this week, two people close to Kirilenko in Russia have said that a verbal agreement is in place for the 6-foot-9 small forward to return to the NBA with the Nets upon the conclusion of the Euroleague finals. While a hefty price tag is still unknown and timing of an official contract signing up in the air, both sources said it would likely be a three-year deal.

A third person based in Moscow and familiar with Kirilenko’s relationship with CSKA and the Nets -- thanks to the storied history between the 31-year old free agent and Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov -- confirmed friendly talks between the two-sides are on-going and appear imminent.

“It looks very real at this point,” the person said.

“Andrei spoke with Prokhorov before the decision to stay with CSKA, and he pretty much convinced Andrei not to sign with an NBA team until the end of the (Euroleague) season, when the Nets will have more money available (this offseason).”

All Kirilenko did this season with CSKA was solidify himself as the best player in the Euroleague despite the argument that Vassilis Spanoulis of Olympiacos is the league’s most valuable player. With the season Kirilenko has put together, a mid-season jump to New Jersey simply wouldn’t have been the wisest move. In Euroleague play, he averaged 14 points and 7 rebounds per game, while shooting 60 percent from the floor being named the Euroleague’s top defender.

On Wednesday night, Kirilenko kept the party going.

Thanks to his 19 points and 7 rebounds, CSKA beat Lietuvos Rytas in the VTB United League semifinal 79-72 and will now face Unics Kazan Thursday for the championship. It will be CSKA’s last game before taking on Panathinaikos next Friday at the Final Four. The winner advances to play the winner of Olympiacos and FC Barcelona Regal.

And this is where Kirilenko’s future with the Nets gets even more interesting.

Despite Kirilenko nearing a return to the league as some believe, coming back to play for CSKA next season is still very much a reality.

“I think he can get some attractive offers and the NBA looks like his first option -- it's like 80% right now, but I see the chance of him staying with CSKA too. It will also depend on how CSKA finishes in the (Euroleague) Final Four,” the person added.

“If Andrei sees that he is so valuable to CSKA, why wouldn’t he stay?”

A lot has changed since Kirilenko signed to play in CSKA and opted not to return to the NBA this season as offers from around 16 teams, according to his agent Marc Fleisher, floated around the open market for AK-47’s versatile services.

                              - He broke his nose in an ugly scene in November.

                              - He bounced back weeks later sporting a protective mask.

                              - He led CSKA to the Euroleague Final Four all while putting up numbers and honors any coach in the NBA would be proud to call upon.

Still, the Brooklyn Nets have more than a busy offseason ahead of them. Aside from trying to lock up free agent Deron Williams, there are the ever-present Dwight Howard talks swirling around, Gerald Wallace’s future with the team uncertain, and nine potential free agents to consider. Nets general manager Billy King has his work cut out for him, but Kirilenko’s piece in that puzzle sounds like it will fall into place before long.

Williams and Howard are the priority. That’s nothing new. But don’t think for a second Kirilenko isn’t part of the free agent equation for Brooklyn. He’s a very big part.

Is the ink dried on the contract? No.

Are the two sides engaged in on-going discussions and know the steps they’ll take if Kirilenko decides to return to the NBA once the Euroleague postseason comes to a close?

Go ahead and bank Prokhorov’s billions on it.

As another source put it: “Those who doubt Kirilenko and the Nets aren’t ready to move forward with a deal are only getting one side of the story. (Billy) King may be the one answering questions to the press in Brooklyn, but in Russia the one-on-one conversations carry a lot more weight.”
Andrei Kirilenko has been link with the New Jersey Nets last offseason. Kirilenko is an option that is pending. Note that it was also reported that the Brooklyn Nets are also eyeing Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics in the free agency.
