Summerside Storm have re-signed forward Chris Cayole.

Hopefully Cayole will be healthy this season. He missed a lot of games due to a very high grade ankle sprain. It is nice to know that the team has given Cayole another chance. For one, Summerside storm have missed his markmanship from long range.

    Deadline nears for NBL expansion

With an important deadline just two weeks off, it appears any new entries in the National Basketball League of Canada fold for the 2012-13 campaign will come from Ontario.

The NBL, which played its inaugural season with seven teams, has set May 31 as the deadline for prospective ownership groups to formally apply for membership for the upcoming year.

Groups in six Ontario cities — St. Catharines, Kingston, Mississauga, Ottawa, Windsor and Kitchener — are the only ones that “have expressed interest and ... are actively pursuing (membership),” NBL president and CEO Andre Levingston said Tuesday.

“We’ve got some really good things on the go right now,” Levingston said as he and NBL chief operating officer Ian McCarthy were heading to Ontario for more meetings this week.

“How many teams we’re gonna have, we don’t know, because we still have a lot of due diligence to do on our part.”

Levingston, the owner of the Halifax Rainmen, and McCarthy, the president and general manager of the Saint John Mill Rats, helped create the NBL a year ago after both teams had stints in two U.S.-based loops.

The two founders have been on the go since the season ended in late March, meeting with prospective ownership groups and municipal officials in an effort to expand the league.

But Levingston said there’s no ideal number he’s looking for in terms of new teams.

“I just want a solid ownership group, so if that number is one, it’s one,” he said.

“I don’t wanna put teams in just for the sake of saying we’ve got more teams. We’ve been a part of leagues like that. We just wanna make sure that we get the right individuals to be a part of what we’re doing, which is to grow our league on solid ground.”

The NBL had also kicked the tires in Hamilton and Sydney, among other cities, but Levingston said no ownership groups had come forward in those areas.

Potential ownership groups have to include a refundable deposit of $50,000 — double last year’s required amount — with their application.

Levingston and McCarthy are also trying to help the Quebec Kebs find a new home. The Kebs, the third original NBL franchise, had to vacate their tiny venue at Laval University and haven’t been able to reach an agreement with the city on another location.

The Kebs are now in discussions with another facility within the province, Levingston said, and there are no plans to relocate the franchise to one of the Ontario cities under consideration for an expansion team.

He said, though, that it appears the club won’t be back in Quebec City.

“The franchise has to have support from the city and if the city is not going to support it, there are other cities that would love to have professional basketball. So it’s their loss.”

Arena Group Looking To Bring NBL Canada Franchise To Markham City

Everybody wants a peice of NBL Canada. Everybody wants a piece of Canadian Basketball.

GTA Sports and Entertainment (GTASE) has entered into talks with the National Basketball League of Canada to explore bringing a team to Markham.

The team would play out of the 20,000-seat GTA Centre, slated to be completed in late 2014, in a 10,000 seat bowl, with the upper deck closed off.

GTASE chairman and CEO Graeme Roustan has insisted all along that the facility won’t be built only to attract an NHL team down the line.

“I am partial to basketball and want it in the building,” Roustan told the Sun.

“Everybody thinks this is all about hockey. It isn’t.”

Continued Roustan, who recently stepped down as chairman of Bauer Performance Sports, Ltd: “Our building is a multi-purpose building designed for events from 3,000 people to 20,000 people, so this fits perfectly into the overall strategy.

“At the end of the day, what people are going to see is that this facility is really a multi-purpose venue that will have a lot of sports, a lot of events, a lot of cultural things in it.”

Roustan knows hockey inside-out due to business background and also knows that basketball is growing in the GTA at a far quicker pace.

“The growth of basketball is incredible. The fact of the matter, hockey is growing in the single-digit numbers every year, whereas basketball is in the double-digit numbers. It’s important when you’re building a facility of this kind to have the vision of five years down the road and 10 years down the road and to be able to program the facility in such a way that you take advantage of what’s coming,” he said.

“The NBL Canada has a very, very exciting product so the demand is there and the opportunity for the citizens of Markham to have a Markham-branded professional basketball team I think is extremely exciting for the community.”

Roustan recognizes that hoops fans can simply go to the ACC to check out the Raptors, but says this is a different product at a different price-point.

“I’m not anticipating anyone who is an NBA fan to stop going to see NBA games to go to an NBL Canada game,” he said.

"Markham is recognized as Canada's high tech capital and the most ethnically diverse community in Canada, making it an ideal location for this facility," said Roustan.

Windsor Express getting their first win in franchise history as they stun the Halifax Rainmen 111-105. Mike Helms lead Windsor with 25 points.

That is a nice debut for the team.
