Default China U-17 Team Finishes 11th in Schweitzer U-18 Tourney

China finished 11th at the Albert Scheweitzer junior tournament in Mannheim, Germany. It won its last three games, defeating Greece 72-59, Denmark 74-66 and Sweden 78-63. But it lost its first three games to Spain 88-66, to Australia 80-71 and to Russia 77-61.

China sent its U-17 team to this U-18 tournament, so it is hard to judge from the tourney where China stands internationally. With two omissions, 211 cm center/power forward Pan Ning (210-C-95), and top perimeter scorer Guo Xiaopeng, this was the same team that won the Asian U-16 championship last fall. It is the team that is expected to play in the World U-17 Championship in Lithuania from June 29 to July 8.

So the Schweitzer tournament was practice for the FIBA tournament, which makes it even harder to judge how good this team is. China was trying things out, as it often does in practice games, and winning was not the prime motivation.

Seven players on the team were listed as born in 1995 and 5 were listed as born in 1996. The star of the team was Zhou Qi (215-C-96), who may be a better prospect than Wang Zhelin. But he is two years younger and not nearly as good at present.

Guard Zhao Jiwei (185-G-95) is the second star of the team and may even be China's National Team point guard of the future. 204 cm Liu Bo (204-F-96) also showed star potential, especially in rebounding.

But true U-18 stars like Wang Zhelin, Gao Shang and Luo Hanchen were not there so we cannot judge how a true U-18 team would have done against this quality of competition

What an effort by Zhou Qi against Egypt. 36 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks. But China still lost. Zhou even shot and converted a three.
