ARG - Jasen months away from making Olympic bow

SEVILLE (Olympics) – Hernan 'Pancho' Jasen enters a different world, a basketball nirvana, when the subject of the Olympics comes up.

At 33, Jasen, an Argentinian who has only become an integral part of his national team the past two summers, is just several months away from competing at the London Games.

After playing at the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey, the small forward was in Argentina this past summer and played at the FIBA Americas Championship.

Along with Argentina basketball icons Manu Ginobili, Luís Scola, Andres Nocioni, Fabricio Oberto and Carlos Delfino, and roared on by the fans watching the golden generation in person maybe for the last time, Jasen went on a wild, emotional ride to the title.

"Mar del Plata was perfect, incredible and amazing,” Jasen says to FIBA.com. “It was unique.

“We struggled, we suffered, we managed to qualify.”

Argentina edged Puerto Rico, 81-79, in the Semi-Finals in Mar del Plata when Jose Barea missed a three-pointer at the death.

That victory clinched a spot in the Olympics.

Argentina then beat Brazil, 80-75, in the gold-medal game.

“It was beautiful to play in our country,” Jasen recalls.

    “It was something very special.”

Jasen, a long-time player at Estudiantes in Madrid who now plays in Seville with Cajasol Banca Cívica, has an idea of what the Olympic experience will be like.

Some of his teammates have told him about the Athens Games, where they won gold, and Beijing, where the team claimed bronze.

"I'm looking forward to the Olympic Games,” he says.

    “I'm really excited about London.

“There's less time to go to the big event and I just hope to arrive well, and be able to help my national team.

"I've been to London before but I really prefer to go there with a view to play at the Olympics.”

Jasen will experience the Opening Ceremony, the Olympic Village and thrilling games.

It will be, as this summer in Mar del Plata was, a career-defining moment for him.

“This will be the farewell to our group because we are getting on,” he says.

“It's the last important tournament that we will play together and we are approaching it with a lot of enthusiasm."

ARG - Lamas and the ‘people’s love for this national team’

BUENOS AIRES (Olympics) - Argentina coach Julio Lamas is no different than any other basketball fan in his country.

He’s full of wonder, even amazement, when considering what the nation’s players have accomplished the past decade.

There is the silver medal at the 2002 FIBA World Championship in Indianapolis, and the gold at the Athens Games two years later.

In 2006, Argentina came in fourth at the World Championship in Japan and at the Beijing Olympics, they captured bronze.

Manu Ginobili has captured NBA titles with the San Antonio Spurs and Luis Scola is a solid power forward with Houston Rockets.

Where Lamas is different to other fans is that he has had two spells of leading the national team.

It’s why he pauses, smiles and becomes nostalgic when asked to look back at Argentina’s incredible run that saw them climb to the top of the FIBA World Rankings.

"When I coached them between 1997 and 1999, I thought they would do better,” he says, “that they were the best that I had ever seen representing our country.

“But I would lie if I said that I imagined that they would achieve the results they did at national level and at club level.”

If you were among the lucky ones and saw the national team before it took off, you will remember Lamas steering an Argentina team that included Fabricio Oberto, Manu Ginobili and Pepe Sanchez into the Quarter-Finals of the 1998 FIBA World Championship in Athens.

That trio, and others like Alejandro Montecchia, Ruben Wolkowisky, Hugo Sconochini, Andres Nocioni, Luis Scola and Carlos Delfino, hit the heights when capturing Olympic gold in Greece.

    Lamas’ second stint

By returning to the helm for last year’s FIBA Americas Championship in Mar del Plata, Lamas was able to not only coach the country’s legends to a gold medal and secure a spot in next year’s Olympics.

He was able to reflect on the impact the national team has had on his country.

"People fell in love with this national team,” he says.

“They have transcended the basketball world and are known, accepted, respected and admired.

"They have played together from a young age and the past achievements united them.

“They enjoy playing together, they are very ambitious and have a very strong mentality.”

Argentina is an old national team, now.

The average age in the 12-man group playing last summer was more than 33 years.

Only two players, Delfino (29) and Juan Gutierrez (28), were under 30.

Yet Lamas, whose comments were carried in the Clarin newspaper, insists the players still have lofty aims when looking ahead to London.

"The mentality of these players will make sure that until we are out, we will try to win a medal,” he says.

And how conceivable is that in London, where the United States, Spain, France, Australia, Brazil, China, Tunisia and Great Britain await, with three more teams to clinch spots at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

"It's a plus that in London you play alternate days,” Lamas says.

“But that also is a bonus for our opponents although for us it's especially good.

“In 2004 we didn't need it. Today we do.”

    The plan for London

Ginobili, Nocioni, Scola and Delfino are locks to make the team.

Each played at the Athens Games.

But Lamas says fans shouldn’t think about the 2004 Olympic team when assessing the current squad.

"This team is more similar to that of Beijing than Athens," he says.

"We could have eight or nine players who featured at the last Olympics.

"In the shooting guard and forward positions, we have a very high level.

"Our point guard is (Pablo) Prigioni, which gives me a lot confidence.

"In London, I would like Scola to play more as a four (power forward) than five (center) and for Nocioni to play as a three (small forward).

“We have to develop another option in the center role and consolidate our guard that will be a second playmaker.”

    Spain 2014

Lamas was brought into the national team set-up in part because his predecessor, Sergio Hernandez, did not want to commit to coaching the team beyond London.

"My part-time contract ends in September and the CABB (Argentina Basketball Confederation) will have to decide whether they extend it full time until after Spain 2014,” he says.

“I want to guide the national team at the FIBA World Championship in 2014.

“I want to be there. It would be a great challenge.

“We can continue to be competitive.

“We can continue to exploit results because this unique and fantastic team can continue to grow."

ARG - Oberto focuses on fitness, London chance

CORDOBA (Olympics) - Fabricio Oberto has begun to train with Atenas de Cordoba in the hope of making Argentina's Olympic squad.

A two-time Olympian and long-time member of the national team, Oberto came out of retirement to compete at the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship.

The 36-year-old played only five games during the 2010-11 NBA season before retiring due to a heart condition, in November 2010.

He appeared in seven games at the FIBA Americas Championship in Mar del Plata last summer and averaged 1.9 points and 3.4 rebounds.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that Oberto could play competitive games for a club again, be it for Atenas or another team.

Right now, though, his primary concern is to be fit and stay in contention for a spot in London.

"What I need to do is be in shape and the rest will depend on the coach (Julio Lamas)," he said.

Is it just me or Oberto's return to the NT makes no sense?

Looks like Lamas just gave me some kind of an answer (bolded part).

          ARG – Welcome back, Hernandez

BUENOS AIRES (Olympics) - Argentina coach Julio Lamas is extremely happy to be reunited with Sergio Hernandez again.

Lamas was an assistant to Hernandez when he led the national side and now the latter has agreed to join the technical staff when the FIBA Americas Championship winners compete at the London Games.

His return to the coaching brain trust was confirmed last week.

"Sergio can bring his knowledge of the Europeans," Lamas said.

"His opinion at the time of planning our play will be valuable.

"When I was his assistant in Beijing, I was there for what was needed.

"I am a lover of team work."

Hernandez has a lot of experience at the helm.

He replaced Ruben Magnano as coach after the 2004 Olympics, when Argentina won gold, and helped keep the national team among the leading sides in the world.

In Beijing, Argentina captured a bronze medal.

An important member of that team, Fabricio Oberto, came out of retirement to play at the FIBA Americas Championship and is hoping to compete at the Olympics.

He is not under contract with a club, however, and only recently began training with Atenas de Cordoba for a couple of times per week.

Training with no games seems unlikely to be enough for Oberto to be included in the Olympic squad.

Lamas announced last week that Manu Ginobili, Leo Gutierrez, Carlos Delfino, Andres Nocioni, Hernan Jasen, Juan Gutierrez, Pablo Prigioni and Luis Scola were confirmed players in the preliminary squad for London.

"Only players that are competing are able to be selected," Lamas said.

The rest of the finalists for the team will be named later.

"I will not give more names to the eight players that I already called,” Lamas said.

“Everyone is under observation, especially guards and centers."

As for the NBA finishing later this year due to the lockout, Lamas isn't worried.

"Scola (Houston Rockets) does not suffer from playing much or continuously," Lamas said.

"Delfino (Milwaukee Bucks) is young and Nocioni (Philadelphia 76ers) will not have problems even though he is not playing much."
