Great account of the game, Anthony...hope you can do the same in the next two Crispa-Toyota games. One thing I can assure you though, for the Toyotanatic in you, you will enjoy watching one of those two games in store....

But then it can be argued that it was the last game of the double-round semifinals and the two teams were just finishing up their game assignments, so that's why there was practically no defense observed in that game. I think it is the only All-Filipino game where the top scorers for both team scored 50 points or more.

(Imports do that almost all that time in that era but that's for another discussion).

Contrast this with the way the two team battled it out in the best-of-five championship series which saw Crispa prevail 3-2 behind the shooting of William Adornado and the tough defense of Gregorio Joy Dionisio in Game 5.

This was the season wherein Toyota dominated and thus earned for El Presidente the first of four MVP titles. Crispa was the only handicapped team then and did not even win a single PBA conference for that year.

The following year, the roles would be reversed and Toyota would be the lone handicapped team. Crispa won the Grand Slam, winning the reinforced conference with Billy Ray Bates and the Open Conference with Bates combining first with DeWayne Jay Scales and then Larry Demic.

Just a very slight correction Fordmo...

The Reinforced Conference was introduced in 1981 with the concept of handicapping the strong teams by lowering their imports' height ceilings compared to the stronger teams. Hence, Toyota had the 6'1 Archie Talley while Crispa brought in the 6'1 Al Green in that maiden conference. SMB brought in the 6'3 Rob Roberson while U/Tex took in the 6'3 John Kazmer, later replaced by Leroy Jackson. Mariwasa brought in the 6'5 Jessie Boyd, Tanduay had the 6'4 Russell Murray (later declared the PBA's Best Import for that conference), Great Taste paraded the 6'5 Lew Massey and Tefilin introduced to us the great Norman Black.

Since Crispa and U/Tex tangled in the first Reinforced Finals of 1981, the two teams were handicapped with a 6'1 import ceiling for 1982. Hence, Crispa brought in the flashy Glenn Hagan while the Wranglers were reinforced by Julius Wayne. Toyota brought in the 6'3 Arnold Dugger, later to be replaced by Donnie Ray Koonce. San Miguel, which won the Invitationals and placed second to Toyota in the Reinforced, was backstopped by Black.

And since Toyota topped the 1982 Reinforced, they had to be handicapped the succeeding season. They brought in NBA superstar Kevin Porter (then the record holder for most number of assists in a NBA game with 29 feeds) who was barely 6'0 feet tall. San Miguel, which placed second in the Reinforced, was allowed a 6'3 ceiling and brought in Koonce. I can't recall the reason why the PBA only handicapped Toyota with a 6'1 import. My best guess was that the PBA learned from the previous season when U/Tex didn't compete effectively in the 1982 season, leading to its virtual disbandment. Crispa of course, ushered Billy Ray Bates and welcomed new coach Tommy Manotoc. Great Taste, after being in the dumps for the past couple of seasons, finally latched upon a gem of an import in Black, plus the acquisition of super rookie Ricardo Brown and 3-time MVP William Adornado from the disbanded U/Tex Wranglers team, making them the next team to beat...

I will also correct myself further. In the Under-16 thread, I wrote Great Taste first championship was in December 1984. No it was their second. Their first was in that sweep of Beerhausen in the All Filipino-II. MVP Mon Fernandez showed he had heart besides skills when he led a memorable comeback in the second half of the final game only to fall short in the end game.

For those of us not fortunate enough to watch the game, fans should be reminded that Toyota also has an import advantage in 1982, Donnie Ray Koonce and Andrew Fields (San Andres Bukid) were at floor at the same time while Mike Gibson and Lew Brown can only be fielded one at a time.

In 1983, the roles were reversed with Crispa's Billy Ray Bates combining, on the court at the same time with DeWayne Jay Scales and, later on, Larry Demic while Toyota's Andy Fields and Ralph Brewster can only be fielded one at a time.

At least Glenn Hagan was good enough to be the Redmanizer's import in the 1982 Reinforced and Invitational Conferences. Glenn Hagan was a point guard. He was good, but not good enough to lead the Redmanizers to a title as they finished 3rd in the Reinforced and runner-up to San Miguel in the Invitational.

Bu due to the handicapping system in the 1982 Open Conference, Crispa must have paraded about 8 imports including the late Lewis Brown, Mike Gibson, Mike Wagner, Clarence Kea, among others, to come up with a 7-11 record, good for seventh place finish. Only Galerie Dominique was worse with a 5-13 record.

If it was any consolation for the Redmanizers then, Toyota agreed to play Crispa all-Filipino in the second round, which the Redmanizers won.

It was to be a harbinger of the Grand Slam II season in 1983, with Crispa winning the 1983 All-Filipino with a 12-game winning streak, then having Billy Ray Bates as its reinforcement to win the 1983 Reinforced and the Bates-Larry Demic combine to win the Open and the Grand Slam.

After nine games, De la Cruz, Joy Dionisio, Tito Varela, and Jimmy Javier, were removed from Crispa's line-up to give way to mid-conference acquisitions: Ramon Cruz, Padim Israel, Yoyoy Villamin, Bai Cristobal and Rudy Distrito. Cruz, Israel, Villamin, and Cristobal were from the disbanded Apcor squad while Distrito was elevated from the Crispa team in the MICAA.

There is no dispute that these new recruits helped Crispa in its push to win the championship.

Other teams that recruited players from APCOR in the middle of the conference were Tanduay which got Rey Lazaro, and Gilbey's Gins which got Rad Pasco and Alex Clariño.

Other notable mid-conference acquisitions that conference were Presto's Manny Victorino and Joel Banal who were elevated from Presto's MICAA team.

Marte Saldaña, Terry Saldaña, and Gerry Samlani will join the PBA as rookies in 1982.

On Al Green, after his stint with Crispa, signed to play at Australia's National Basketball League where he continued playing professionally and star player until he retired from playing basketball in the end of 1993, he became a naturalised Australian in 1985 and upto today is permanently residing in Australia. Green is currently the coach of the Woodville Warriors senior mens team in the Central Australian Basketball League, as well as the current coach of the Westminster School open A's and B's.
