  • 3rd ASEAN Basketball League Season 2011-2012

    The Return of the Beermen
Posted on July 6, 2011 by Anthony E. Servinio

PASIG CITY – One of the most storied names in Philippine basketball history makes a grand return on a bigger stage with the launching of the San Miguel Beermen as the second Filipino entry in the coming third season of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) in 2012.

A formal contract signing was held Wednesday afternoon at the San Miguel Corporation head office with no less than its President Ramon S. Ang inking the pact with ABL co-founder and Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Erick Thohir. Witnessing the ceremonies were San Miguel Brewery President Roberto Huang, Robert Non, Noli Eala and ABL Chief Executive Office Kuhan Foo.

Seven-time Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Best Import Bobby Parks was introduced as the Beermen’s Head Coach. It is a homecoming of sorts for Parks, who began his legendary career in the Philippines with San Miguel in 1986. At the time of his appointment, he was an assistant coach with the Petron Blazers, the new name that the Beermen began to use in the ongoing PBA Governors’ Cup.

“We will bring San Miguel’s winning tradition to the ABL,” said Ang. “We also aim to strengthen our brand in Southeast Asia as we have investments in Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia.” Initially, San Miguel has committed to stay with the ABL for the next five years.

For his part, Thohir recalled the fact that Southeast Asian teams used to regularly make the top four in the Asian level. “It is our dream that in 10 years our teams will again be among the best in Asia,” he said.

Meanwhile, Coach Parks declined to name either prospective players or his coaching staff, leaving it to management to make the announcement. “I hope to form a running team that knows how to execute specially in the end game and a team that can play defense,” said the former University of Memphis star. “You can score all those points but if you don’t stop your opponents from scoring its useless.”

A mix of past and present PBA pros plus standouts from Liga Pilipinas, the D-League and fresh college graduates are expected to comprise the Beermen. A name that has been floated is Junmar Fajardo, the 6’9” center out of the University of Cebu. “I would love to have him,” said Coach Parks. “If ever, then I will have to get another center that plays differently from him.” Rumors circulated in Fajardo’s native Cebu that he would join the ABL Beermen after playing in his final collegiate season this semester.

Since the ABL would begin its 2011-2012 wars in January after the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia this November, Foo bared that the league has plans to keep the teams and its players busy. Several pocket tournaments hosted by the various clubs are in the works that may include non-ABL teams.

Thohir also added that the ABL is looking to add another team or two now that they have a seven-team roster with the signing of San Miguel. They are negotiating with prospective expansion teams in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The long term goal is to have 12 teams by 2015 but they want to take things slowly in order to protect the existing teams.

Regarding a possible rivalry with the ABL’s original Filipino team the Philippine Patriots, Ang was quick to explain that he considers Patriots team owner Michael Romero as family as they have business ventures together. “I have no problem with that, we will support each other,” said Ang.

Should it be an all-Philippines ABL finals, only the champion can go on to represent SEABA in the 23rd FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in 2012 along with the Third Placer.

In other issues, Thohir said that the ABL is monitoring the FIBA suspension of Thailand but feels that the defending champions can still compete this being. They are also looking at the plight of the Brunei Barracudas, which is having problems due to the lack of local players.

With the entry of a big conglomerate in San Miguel Corporation, it looks like the ABL has further solidified its existence as the driving force for the development of basketball in the region. Along with its current partners like Air Asia and ESPN Asia, the ABL is here to stay.

OT but interesting development in the ABL, I do hope teams can get NBA caliber imports to challenge Beermen's bid to ASEAN supremacy.

Together with young collegians, ex- players and current players of the PBA, the team will be ready to give the other teams a tough challenge as they are aiming to win the Season 3 championship. With more teams in the league, this will also include more games during the regular season in which regional fans can now look forward to a bigger and longer season.

With San Miguel joining in, the league will now have 2 Philippine based teams along with the AirAsia Philippine Patriots who were the runners up to the 2nd Season. Other teams also participating in the league include last season’s champions ,Chang Thailand Slammers together with SatriaMuda BritAma, Singapore Slingers, Brunei Barracudas, and Westport’s KL Dragons.

Mario Wuysang, Point Guard of Indonesia’s current ABL team SatriaMuda added “ It is great that San Miguel is joining the ABL, to have a PBA team joining is exciting for us as players and i believe for the fans in the region as well. I also believe it will take the competitive level up another notch. So im personally excited and eager to take on the challenge”

Mr. Goh Cheng Huat, head coach of the Westports KL Dragons from Malaysia in Season 2 said, “ the league will be more exciting, competitive and challenging for the teams as we have an additional new team, as it is also good for the league as it shows that the league is growing in the region”.

Mr. Khun Surasak Chinawatana, the team owner of the Chang Thailand Slammers and the President of the Thailand Basketball Association added, “I would like to give a warm welcome to San Miguel in joining ABL next season. Their participation in next season's league would only make the ABL games more competitive and entertaining for each and everyone of us. We look forward to an exciting season ahead!"

San Miguel’s strategic move to join the team will also be a great marketing push for its brand in the South East Asia market as they will have a good platform to promote their products in the region as well as to represent their nation in the ABL.

Singapore Slingers General Manager Michael Johnson added “The announcement that a team with the power and quality of the San Miguel brand is joining the ABL in 2012 is a great step forward for the league. I also believe it is a great step for San Miguel who will be able to showcase their team's talent and brand throughout SE Asia in a week to week regional league”

Mr. Erick Thohir, President of the South East Asia Basketball Association commented, “It is an honour for us to have San Miguel in the league as it is one of the biggest brands in SEA and with this we continue to build basketball in the SEA. With all the talent that we have in SEA and with competition, one day we will have a team whom will represent ASIA in the world of basketball”

Mr. Bobby Park, a legend in the Philippine basketball scene has been selected as the best person to lead the San Miguel Beermen Philippines team.

The 3rd Season of the AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League is scheduled to start on 14th of Jan. 2012 right up to the grand championship finals in June 2012 with the Chang Thailand Slammers trying to defend their championship title and national pride from old rivals and competitive newcomers.

I am very excited of the inclusion of a San Miguel Corporation (SMC) franchise in the ABL. Like Mario Wuysang said, it increases the level of play in the ABL. It is likely that we're not going to see the likes of Rabeh Al Hussaini or former Beermen Don-Don Hontiveros and Danny Seigle. However, given San Miguel's history, they will come up of with players that will contend for the ABL championship.

The team have also hinted that it would be a combination of players from the PBA, Liga, D-League, and collegiate ranks. Thus, I have a feeling that Danny Ildefonso and some second stringers, which can start in the PBA, will be shipped to the ABL. It can happen since SMC has three teams in the PBA, and I think these players under contract with an SMC team wouldn't mind.

I also hope that the Beemer would have their home games outside Manila. May be, Cebu. Manila is just too saturated for Basketball with too many leagues from college to the pros.

The Patriots should also get rid of "Phillippine" and change it to "Manila" since the Philippines have two ABL teams.

Since they're interested in getting Junmar Fajardo, do you think it's possible that SMC will be basing their ABL team in Cebu?

The Dragons were supposed to play in one of our collegiate summer leagues this year, but didn't push through.

Bangkok, Thailand: The AirAsia ASEAN Basketball league (ABL) will now have an additional team besides the San Miguel Beerman joining the ABL family. – Bangkok Basketball Holdings made an official announcement at the Golden Tulip Sovereign Hotel Bankok at 3.30PM today that they will be joining South East Asia’s inter-nation professional basketball league’s 3rd season which will start on the 14th of January 201Tom Griffin, owner of Bangkok Basketball Holdings commented “We feel that the ABL is positioned to be a force in the sports community, not just in ASEAN but throughout Asia. Bangkok Basketball plans to be a part of that growth. We are excited to be a part of basketball's growth in South East Asia.”

Bangkok Basketball Holdings whose owners are Tom Griffin and Jeffrey Premer will be working with local basketball forces to choose its local players from a selected pool currently playing for the National team. The talent pool for basketball in Thailand is very strong they plan to give back to the community for continued growth. There are also plans to reach out to the community to foster the development of basketball capability in Thailand by a series of exchanges that will include visits by our coaches throughout Thailand together with players and sponsors alike to meet with and counsel players and coaches; coaches at elite levels as well as important coaches at the grassroots levels so that all levels of basketball have been reached to further the development of basketball.

Team owner of the Westports KL Dragons, Mr. Ruben Gnanalingam commented, “It’s great that there has been two new teams joining the league, it is a big step forward for the expansion of the ABL and basketball in South East Asia as a growing sport. I am very sure that this is just the beginning and there will be more teams from other countries as well in time to come. The Westports KL Dragons would like to extend a warm welcome to the new ownership group in Bangkok on being part of the league. I am sure the level of competition is going to be higher in the league as we’ve seen how strong basketball in Thailand has become, referring to Thailand Slammers’ capture of the title this past season.

General Manager of the Singapore Slingers, Michael Johnson added “The announcement of the Bangkok Basketball Holdings joining San Miguel as confirmed new teams for the 2012 ABL season is another huge boost to the league. Thailand will now have its own local rivalry with them joining the current ABL champion Thailand Slammers in the league. Fans of the ABL can look forward to a bigger and better ABL season starting January 2012.”

Team owner of the Philippine Patriots, Dr. Mike Romero mentioned "I salute the whole ABL organization for another prized team recruit, after San Miguel Philippines, Bangkok Basketball. The ABL is truly becoming the biggest premiere basketball league in the whole ASEAN region. ABL is truly growing in leaps and bounds. The excitement between teams and countries is likewise growing. The ABL is truly the future of ASEAN basketball."

Bangkok Basketball is currently interviewing potential coaches. They are seeking an individual that includes a professional playing career as well as a successful coaching history. BB considers this choice to be paramount in the success of the organization and is weighing options available. The selection of players will be collaboration between the management and the selected head coach.

Chief Executive Officer of the ASEAN Basketball League, Mr. Kuhan Foo commented, “Bangkok Basketball Holdings is a welcome addition to the ABL. This reinforces the growth of the ABL in the past 2 seasons. With them on board it also shows that the basketball playing talent in the region is now increasing and with the inclusion of the new teams and with our foundation members now throwing out a larger net to seek talented players, it is going to be a bright future for basketball in the ASEAN region.”

Bangkok Basketball Holdings will be having a contest soon for fans to decide their team name and also a chosen mascot to best represent their team in 2012.

Phi ABL teams should instead establish a foothold in davao or cebu where fans are more likely to troop to the coliseums to watch the games. more over, these cities are much closer to our asean neighbors and the close proximity will not only significantly shorten the travel time but may also encourage inter-country visits of basketball fans during game days.
