  • How do you think Garbajosa will fare in the NBA?

Calderon, his teammate on the Espana National Team and the Toronto Raptors, says he is ready (what else would they have him say?)... from the Toronto Sun: article here...

Garbajosa all-worlds By MIKE KOREEN, TORONTO SUN
Calderon says Spain/Raptors teammate ready for NBA

As Spain's basketball team partied the night away in Japan, Raptors point guard Jose Calderon took a moment to sing the praises of teammate Jorge Garbajosa.

The Spanish forward, who signed with the Raptors this summer, was instrumental in Spain's 70-47 win over Greece in the final of the world championship yesterday and was named to the all-tournament team. Calderon, who had a good tournament for Spain, believes Garbajosa gave Raptors fans a sign of what's to come by scoring a game-tying high 20 points and adding 10 rebounds and four assists against Greece, helping the team overcome the loss of injured star and tourney MVP Pau Gasol.

"He (Garbajosa) is ready to play there," Calderon told The Toronto Sun in a telephone interview after Spain claimed its first world title. "He has confidence and he's going to go there and play hard and practice hard ... He earned the respect of all the guys."

The internationally diverse Raptors are the only NBA team with more than one 2006 world championship gold medallist.

Garbajosa, who showcased his long-range shooting touch by draining six of 11 three-pointers yesterday, finished the tournament with a 12.7 point scoring average.

"It's the best moment," the 6-foot-9 Garbajosa said. "To win for my team, to win for my country, with all the people watching in Spain, it means a lot to me.

"This kind of victory is really important for any player. But I have to work a lot (in Toronto) and work every day in practice. I want to try to play well for all the fans (in Toronto). I know we (Spain) are the best team in the world now, but I'm starting from zero (in the NBA)."

Calderon had seven points and one assist in 15 minutes yesterday. He had a solid tournament, finishing with a 55% shooting percentage, a good sign for a player who struggled with his shot in his rookie season in the NBA last year.

"It is unbelievable," Calderon said. "It's one of the best, (maybe) the best, feelings. I can't even think about what happened.

"We didn't have our best player, but everybody tried to give it a little bit more. For sure, it was for (Gasol). We didn't want to talk about Pau's situation (before the game), we talked about the team."

After returning to Spain, Calderon and Garbajosa are slated to come to Toronto next week to begin preparing for training camp.

My perception of things is that Garbajosa won't make it in the NBA... In my opinion he's a player truly made for the European style of the game, not the NBA. Perhaps I'm not seeing things right, but let's wait and see.

they wont pass him the ball and he ll be the only one playing defense unless AB and Calderon are in there...His coach wont have any idea how to use him
and they ll have to bring in David Blatt in early season to explain to the rest of the team how to actually play a team game Then they ll bring in Byron" I dont have a clue"Scott"to really screw everything up for sure. He ll actually do fine because the NBA is making a bigchange for the better one team at a time.

haha sharp but true . I don't think either that garbajosa will do well in NBA . He's the kind of intelligent player who is perfect for the Euroleague but lacks athleticsm for the NBA . And just being a smart player is not enough to make up for your lack of speed . ( even saras had a difficult first season in indiana) .

Yeah, he won't get ball from Nesterovic, Bargnani, Anthony Parker, TJ Ford and Calderon. I mean these guys don't have idea what "pass the ball" means

I still believes that any good player can make big things in nba, even if they are gonna suffer quite a lot in the beginings (lok at Macas, Saras...etc). I even remember D.Petrovic speaking about returning to Europe after his first year in NBA.
I really think that Jorge wont play not even the quantity of minutes that he used to in Europe, so he will have to accurate his shots in the minutes that the coach will give him (assuming that the coach would know him and would know how to use him.).
But in general, a player that have played amazingly at the highest level during the last years in Europe, that has played against (and won) many of the best NBA players in European and World Championships... i think he deserve some credit, even if is obviously clear that he will not have a key role in the team.

              Taken from the Toronto Star

World champs prep for NBA: Garbajosa, Calderon to play key back-up roles

Jorge Garbajosa has won a world championship and league titles and cups at every level by being a role player on good teams and there's no reason to think he's all of a sudden about to assert himself as a star just because he's in the NBA.

The Raptors did not sign the Spanish forward as a free agent because they needed — or wanted — him to become a dominant force on a rebuilt roster and now that he's here, Garbajosa knows what he has to do.

"I know I'm in the best league of the world with the best players in the world ... I have to work a lot, have to (do) a good job to show to my coach and my team that I can play," Garbajosa said yesterday.

"I always try to help my teammates and my team. I can shoot with range, I can pass the ball and I always try to play hard on defence."
              Somewhere, Sam Mitchell is smiling.

              TANNIS TOOHEY/TORONTO STAR
Jose Calderon, left, and Jorge Garbajosa are ready for the Toronto Raptors' training camp after their Spanish team won the world basketball championship.

Garbajosa and his Spanish and Raptor teammate Jose Calderon arrived in town earlier this week, fresh off their gold-medal-winning performance at the world championships in Japan and ready to do whatever it is the Raptors need.

The 29-year-old Garbajosa and the 25-year-old Calderon are expected to be key contributors to the Raptors' second unit, the former backing up the likes of Chris Bosh and whoever starts at small forward and the latter returning to his job as a backup point guard.

How they are able to acclimate themselves to a group of new teammates will go a long way in determining how successful the newly constructed Raptors might be.

But it's not going to be easy. Calderon got off to a quick start last season but slowed considerably after injuring a foot midway through the campaign. And Garbajosa, despite his age and wealth of European experience, is going to be learning a new game in a new league on a new continent.

"He (Calderon) told me it's a little bit different but, at the end, it's just basketball," said Garbajosa. "It's the same everywhere. I have to learn the new rules and the new way to play but after a few days it's going to be like all my life."

At least he'll have a close friend to rely on and that could make for some comic moments. For years, Garbajosa has been the elder statesman on the Spanish team, four years older and vastly more experienced than his youthful point guard teammate. But in the NBA, Calderon is the vet and Garbajosa is the rookie and don't think Calderon won't have a little fun with that.

A season ago, the other Raptors made Calderon tote around a Dora The Explorer backpack to signify his rookie status. No one's sure what they'll have in store for Garbajosa this time around.

Having a familiar face around was only part of the reason that Garbajosa decided on his great North American adventure after playing for more than a decade in Spain.

"This is the right moment," he said. "I have the luck to be in very good teams in Europe, I won leagues, cups, and now there is this opportunity and I cannot say `no' to a very good team in the best league in the world.

"Toronto has all that I need to play in the NBA. Players I know, I like the city, it's a very European city with a team that is growing, an ambitious project, it's the perfect place for me."

In Spain those who want to criticize Garbajosa call him " feet of plumb" ("pies de plomo") or say that the only thing that he do is to score three-points, "tira-triples". Of course he is more than that but when the newspapers said that he was going to the NBA, it was difficult to believe.
We must wait to know what he can give to the Raptors, I'm not sure what it can be but maybe he give a surprise.

I think he can be a good specialist in the NBA 'cause it's too slow and undersize to play a lot of minutes in defense, but in offense he can give his contribute scoring off three point line..

But I also think that he has some possibility to become an starting player or a sixth man 'cause a lot of centers that are now in the nba aren't so good on offense so the difensive truobles of Garbajosa become less..but in the playoff???

Nah, he is no "pies de plomo" and the funny thing is that he is not comfortable with the NBA three point line.
