oh my, they are now also putting age limits. what will happen to those players who are still capable of playing but are already over 30? players like stephen padilla, marlon basco can still play.

Tight battle expected in Liga Pilipinas fifth conference
By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated April 26, 2011 12:00 AM

Liga Pilipinas officials join hands with coaches and team officials during the launch of the league’s fifth conference. They are, from left, Richard Michael, team manager of Ilocos Sur Tigers; Val Rosabal, MisOr Meteors official; Arvin Bonleon, head coach MP Warriors of GenSan; Gov. Oscar Moreno, Liga Pilipinas chair; Gov. Chavit Singson, team owner of Ilocos Tigers; Noli Eala, Liga official; Gerald Ejercito, Laguna Golden Lions team manager; Jun Usman; Willy Generalao, head coach, M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños; Norman Isla, head coach of Laguna Golden Lions; and Michell Tolentino, asst. coach of Laguna Lions. JUN MENDOZA

MANILA, Philippines - Liga Pilipinas welcomes a new franchise in Pampanga, a returning squad in Ilocos Sur, and a roster of mostly retooled teams when it starts its Conference 5 tomorrow at the Sto. Domingo Gymnasium in Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur.
Pampanga came in as the seventh member of the country’s premier regional basketball tournament, parading a team that will be mentored by Allan Trinidad. The Ilocos CS Tigers of Gov. Chavit Singson will make a comeback under coach John Cardel with players led by Warren Ybanez, Chito Jaime and Marlon Basco.
The two will vie for Liga glory against holdovers from the previous conference led by defending champion M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños, Misamis Oriental Meteors of Gov. Oscar Moreno, MP-General Santos Warriors of Rep. Manny Pacquiao, Mandaue-Cebu Landmasters, and Laguna Lions of Gov. E.R. Ejercito.
Under new management, Laguna has beefed up its roster, recruiting 39-year-old behemoth EJ Feihl and ex-pro Gherome Ejercito and 6-5 Fil-Am Anthony Athie along with Robert Sanz and Marlon Legaspi to join the core of the old Laguna Stallions team.
“Liga Pilipinas is here in line with the commitment of the team owners to the development of regional basketball,” said Pinoy Basketbol Management, Inc. president Noli Eala during yesterday’s press launch at the Dragongate Restaurant.
Liga’s fifth season will blast off with the Ilocos leg from April 27-30, with the Cebu Niños taking on the the Laguna Lions in the opener. MP-GenSan Warriors and host Ilocos Tigers will take the floor in the second of two matches set for Day 1.
Coaches and team officials present during the launch agreed it will be a tight battle for the crown.
“I think it’s anybody’s game,” said Moreno, whose Jun Noel-mentored MisOr squad finished runner-up the last time around.

i thought that they are implementing a new rule that will only allow teams not to field players above 30 years old. why is it they are getting EJ fiehl?

yes, that's a big news indeed. generalao is one of the long time assistant coaches of ML with good credentials being a coach himself in minor leagues/commercial leagues and a pba player himself. it's a good precendent for ML to be make him their coach so that yayoy can perform his duties as a city councilor of cebu. playing out of town games in liga will make yayoy leave his duties and denying the people who voted him his much needed services. and it's good in the league as well as we can see a new face on the ML bench.

Yayoy is still the coach of ML. I think the article mistaken Generalao as Cebu's coach considering that he was the one present in the Liga presscon.

Golden Lions, Niños favored in Liga Pilipinas

THE Laguna Golden Lions underscored their determined bid to vie for the title in the 2011 Conference 5 of La Liga Pilipinas by adding to their roster ex-pros EJ Feihl and Gherome Ejercito.

Team manager and actor Gerald Ejercito and coach Nomar Isla announced this development during the press conference held for the tournament’s Ilocos leg, to be held on April 27 to 30.

The 39-year-old Feihl, who at 7’1”, was the tallest player to play in the Philippine Basketball Association from 1993 to 2006, is now the tallest player to play in the Liga and is expected to be a dominant force in the paint despite his age.

Ejercito, who also played in the PBA, is expected to share his experience and leadership to his teammates Marlon Legaspi, Darrel Green, Jonathan Aldave, Bryan Faundo and Boyet Bautista, among others, as the team’s playing assistant coach.

“The people of Laguna are excited to watch the games,” said Ejercito, who represented Laguna team owner and Gov. Jeorge ‘ER’ Ejercito in the press conference.

Aside from Laguna, other teams set to see action in the three-day Ilocos leg Sur at the Sto. Domingo Gymnasium are Manny Pacquiao’s General Santos Warriors, Governor Chavit Singson’s Ilocos CS Tigers and defending champ Cebu Ninos. Other participating teams are Pampanga, Taguig, Manila, Quezon, Iloilo, Misamis Oriental and Zamboanga. But according to most coaches and team managers in the league, reigning champion Cebu remains the team to beat in the conference.
