The ‘Two Faces’ Of Spartak
Spartak Saint-Petersburg coach Zvi Sherf admits his squad has "two faces" when it's competing in Russia's PBL this season.
When the team is turning on all cylinders as it usually does in the EuroChallenge, not many teams are going to beat Spartak.
But when Spartak play as they have in two defeats to BC Triumph, and in the fourth quarter of their narrow escape over Dynamo Moscow on the weekend, any result is possible.
Spartak stormed into a 33-18 lead against Dynamo and stretched the advantage to 50-31 by half-time.
After maintaining the 19-point advantage over the next 10 minutes, Spartak allowed Dynamo to score 29 fourth-quarter points and the visitors had a chance to win on their last possession before falling 87-85.
"The good thing from this game is that we won," Sherf said.
"But Spartak today had two faces - one in the first quarter and another in the second and especially in the fourth quarter when we gave up 29 points.
"In the end on the final possession, the ball was in the hands of the Dynamo players and we played defence like we had to play it."
Spartak are just one of four teams in the EuroChallenge Last 16 with three wins in as many games.
The others are Pinar Karsiyaka, BCM Gravelines and BC Telenet Oostende.

RUS - CSKA fall at Spartak
ST PETERSBURG (PBL) - CSKA Moscow were outscored 28-12 in the fourth quarter and crashed to an 89-71 defeat at Spartak Saint-Petersburg over the weekend in a Russian top-flight game.
Dmitry Shakulin’s side trailed 61-58 going into the final frame and were then blown away with Henry Domercant scoring 14 of his game-high 23 points for the home side in the last 10 minutes.
The result has left CKSA one and a half games behind UNICS Kazan in the PBL.
“Spartak played a great game overall,” Shakulin said.
“We were out-rebounded, the opponents shot with a high percentage and in the last quarter, when Domercant was on fire, we tried to play more active perimeter defense but they immediately received six points from (center Peter) Popovic.
“We fought but played a terrible fourth quarter. The result (of the quarter) - 28-12 - speaks for itself.”
CSKA have had a lot of injuries this season and didn’t not make it into the Euroleague Top 16.
“Our problems are well-known but they cannot be used as excuse,” Shakulin said.
“We have played with the same roster for a long time.
“Young players are now playing more than in previous seasons and that gives some cause to be optimistic.”
With leaders UNICS (10-3) idle and CSKA falling, Lokomotiv Kuban had a chance to take over sole possession of second place but they fell 81-76 at BC Khimki.
Keith Langford of Khimki, who had 22 points, scored to snap a 62-62 tie with 6:30 remaining to put Khimki in front to stay.

RUS - Grigoryev deal ahows Lokomotiv Kuban commitment to youngsters
KRASNODAR (PBL) - Lokomotiv Kuban have seen enough from young guard Maxim Grigoryev to know that he has a bright future.
The 190cm St Petersburg-born player has appeared in all 14 of the club’s PBL games so far this season.
Grigoryev (left in picture), 20, has penned a deal that will keep him at Lokomotiv until 2015.
The director general of the club, Andrey Vedischev, said: "Maxim deserves to play in the first team because of his game and attitude.
"He is an example for our youth who are trying to come into Lokomotiv Kuban.
"I'm glad with our agreement, and that Maxim will defend the Lokomotiv colours for four more years."
Grigoriev played for Russia at the U18 European Championship in 2008 and also at the 2009 U20 European Championship.
"I want Maxim to become a leading player of both team Lokomotiv Kuban, and the Russian national team," Vedischev added.
Grigoryev, who has grown up with the club, said on the club's website: "I am happy that I'm staying at Lokomotiv.
"This club brought me up as a basketball player.
"I am particularly pleased that despite my young age, the coaching staff trusts me and gives me a chance to show my worth on the court."

Spartak Celebrate Russia Cup Triumph
Spartak Saint-Petersburg will go into their EuroChallenge Quarter-Final showdown with Pinar Karsiyaka with a head full of steam after trouncing Nizhniy Novgorod to win the Russian Cup.
Playing one day after their 92-72 demolition of Lokomotiv Kuban, Zvi Sherf's team got a balanced scoring attack and solid defense and rolled to an 80-53 win over BC NN in Krasnoyarsk.
Petar Popovic had 14 points and fellow big man Pero Antic 13 in the Final for Spartak.
Sherf's team led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter but took control in the next frame, outscoring BC NN 23-14 to lead 39-28 at half-time.
With eighth minutes left, a three-point play by Serbia international Ivan Paunic for BC NN reduced the arrears to 42-36.
Spartak replied with seven unanswered points, getting baskets from Vladimir Dyachok and Patrick Beverley, and a three-ball by Russia international Anton Ponkrashov, for a 49-36 advantage.
They next went on an 11-2 run over the last 1:51 of the third quarter for a 62-40 stranglehold on the contest.
One of the keys for the Spartak triumph was the defense against Paunic, who had scored 25 points in his team's semi-final triumph over hosts Enisey but was held to just three points.
Nikola Dragovic and Henry Domercant each had 10 points for Spartak.
Enisey completed a miserable two days for Lokomotiv Kuban by beating Kestutis Kemzura's team 78-73 in the third-place game.Last edited by rikhardur; 03-16-2011, 09:24 PM.

In order of appearance - Chomicius again and again,Kurtis,Kemzura,Kemzura,Kazlauskas and Kurtis again(i hope it was close enough)
Order of them playing basketball, talent wise(EX) - Kurtis,Chomicius ,Kazlauskas ,Kemzura
Order of importance of teams they manage - Kazlauskas,Kurtis, and the two left out are equal.
Order of talent as a managers (my personal opinion) - Kemzura,Kurtinaitis,Kazlauskas and ...
Best combo(ex player /coach) - kurtis ,kazlauskas,chomicius,kemzura
Most likely to loose the job - Chomicius,
Most likely to upgrade the job - Kemzura
Most likely to upgrade his status- Kazlauskas (to legend)
So the person to score the most points for me is Kurtinaitis
And the last is Chomicius(sorry) -because there is no way he can improveLast edited by auris1; 03-20-2011, 01:32 AM.And let that be a lesson to you all. Nobody beats Zalgiris 17 times in a row.

RUS – CSKA win but Kazlauskas isn't impressed
MOSCOW (PBL) - UNICS Kazan made all the headlines this weekend by winning the Eurocup in Italy but back home in Russia, CSKA Moscow prevailed over Enisey Krasnoyarsk to return to the top of the PBL table.
CSKA's 19-point lead at half-time over Enisey was cut to 65-59 with 10 minutes remaining but the hosts ended up claiming a 91-75 triumph to improved to 14-8.
The winners are top of the standings but UNICS (15-5), who are third, have two games in hand.
CSKA coach Jonas Kazlauskas was not the happiest of men after his team’s win.
"We played well for three quarters with some mistakes which can be fixed," Kazlauskas said.
"But our play in the third quarter showed all the team’s problems this season."
The Lithuanian boss, who is the team's third coach this season, then criticized his players.
"After the break, some players got tired, some stopped playing, thinking that the deal’s done," he said.
"In this situation, it is 10 times more difficult to make them play better than when you play a normal game.
"Because every decision had a double price - every shot, every rebound.
"Maybe it looks like I think that our team is able to destroy any opponent.
"Maybe the Russian league is actually much stronger. But I wish all the best to CSKA!"
BC Khimki (14-8) rolled to a 71-46 triumph at Nizhny Novgorod in the league's other game.
