National Team qualify to Stankovic Cup for the 1st time - Jun 9, 2010 (by Tamara Awartani)
The national team of Palestine arrived in Dahuk Iraq for the 10th WABA tournament taking place from the 9th 13th of June, from which 4 teams qualify to Stankovic Cup (Asian Tournament) taking place in Beirut Lebanon from the 7th of Aug 15th of Aug, 2010.
Participating teams in WABA tournament are Palestine, Iraq, Iran (B team) and Syria (U 23), while Lebanon, Jordan (preparing for the World Cup) and Yemen withdrew giving the first four teams a chance to qualify to Stankovic Cup.

Palestine for the first time in its history will take part in Stankovic Cup which is a very important step and needs proper preparation to be able to give a good image of Palestinian Basketball.
We would also like to thank the Iraqi Federation & committee for sponsoring the Palestinian team and facilitating their participation.

Palestine National team had a very short time to prepare for the WABA tournament having only 7 practices together and two practice games as the super league just finished, coached by Derek Crayton who led De La Salle Club to 2nd place in the Superleague, assisted by Nader Marta who led Qalandia to 6th place in the Superleague.

The National Team consists of:
1. Ibrahim Al Habash (194-F-75) Sarriyet Ramallah
2. Yahia Al Khatib (190-G-77) Ibdaa Dheisheh
3. Mahdi Eid (194-F-81) Ibdaa Dheisheh
4. Ibrahim AlBandak Orthodox Bethlehem
5. Tawfiq Richard Rafidi De La Salle Jerusalem
6. Nabeel Nasser (192-C-81) Ahli AlQuds
7. Adham AlJamzawi Qalandia
8. Saleem Sakakini Sarriyet Ramallah
9. Sani Sakakini (204-C-88) Riyadi Jordan
10. Oday Hilal Orthodox Beit Sahour
11. Maher Kassis Orthodox Beit Sahour
12. Jack Tannous Sarriyet Ramallah
While Hussein AlHaj and Ibrahim AlSheikh Ahmad joined them (Palestinians residing in Syria)
Palestine will qualify.

almost asian basketball contenders are in.. iran will play its team b i don't know about the lebanese squad.. notably missing here is the south korea and jordan as we all know that china only plays at asian games and fiba asia championships..what if japan and chinese taipei did not make it on top 5 it means only 2 teams in east asia will qualify for next year's fiba asia championships..china most likely will be in and it is a toss up between sokor, taiwan and japan for the last slot. lebanon already secured ticket to next year's championships being the host of that said tournament..

i think it has a postivie side no traffic like in beirut.

you can take a bus from tripoli or beirut to kfarhab/ghazir then take a service cab. if you don't want to use your car

Logo for 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup unveiled

BEIRUT, Lebanon (3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup): The logo of the 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup, FIBA Asia’s premier event for men’s National Teams this year has been unveiled.

The 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup will be played in Sports City Beirut from Aug 7-15.

The logo (above) incorporates the significant aspects of the Lebanese National flag with the sport of basketball.

The reds on the diagonally opposite ends of the logo reflect the horizontal red strips on the Lebanese National flags.

The green figure in the center is a creative adaptation of the world famous Cedar tree – an integral symbol of traditional Lebanese culture and ideals – with one of its arms extending to half-hook the basketball.

The 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup, incidentally, is the first FIBA Asia event to be hosted by the basketball-crazy Lebanon for senior men’s National Teams.

In the past Beirut had hosted the FIBA Asia Champions Cup for club teams, for two back-to-back years 1999-2000.

The 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup is the qualifying event for the 26th FIBA Asia Championship in 2011, incidentally also to be hosted at Beirut, which in turn will be the qualifying event for 2012 London Olympics. The winners of the 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup will automatically qualify for the 26th FIBA Asia Championship in 2011. The top five teams at the 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup will earn additional berths for their respective FIBA Asia sub zones.

This is the first FIBA Asia event hosted by Lebanon for National Teams.

The 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup will witness the return of Iraq’s men’s National Team to FIBA Asia competitions after a gap of almost a quarter of a century. Iraq had last played in the 14th edition of FIBA Asia Championship, when it was hosted by Bangkok in 1987.

The 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup is also the first FIBA Asia event for senior men’s National Team to be hosted in a country under the West Asian Basketball Association (WABA). The most recent FIBA Asia official competition hosted by WABA was the 20th FIBA Asia U18 Championship at Tehran (Iran) in 2008.

Commenting on the occasion FIBA Asia president Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al-Thani said: “We are all aware of the passion for basketball in Lebanon. It is only befitting that Beirut should host this premier event at a crucial time when a lot of FIBA Asia teams, including Lebanon, are preparing for the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.”

“I am confident that the Lebanese federation and people will rise to the occasion and give us one of the best events,” Sheikh Saud said.

Hosts Lebanon, FIBA Asia champions Iran, Syria and Iraq are the four teams who form the WABA quartet in the fray of 10 teams in competition.

Kazakhstan from Middle Asia, Philippines from SEABA, GCC champions Qatar, and East Asian duo Japan and Chinese Taipei are the other confirmed teams, with one wild card entrant yet to be decided

if they choose Ghazir to host this tournament ,all the teams will suffer from trafic ... specially if Teams choose beirut hotels haha if the game was @ 5 they have to go from 2 to arrive to the stadium ... hahhaha
in my opinion they have to choose Pierre Gemayel Close doors Stadium
this stadiums is verry good and located in Beirut ...
hope they change the decision and take a stadium from Beirut , we will have problems to arrive there specially with the traffic :S

this the official logo of Stankovic ...
