    From Noli Eala's Twitter:

SBP approves early formation of natl team for SEA Games in 2011 composed of players 19-22 yo. Head coach to be decided. Tryouts soon.

I think Ray Parks and Kiefer Ravena are shoo in for this one.

This should include the best amateur players not in Smart Gilas. I'm thinking of the following:

    Norbert Torres
    Arnold van Opstal
    Brian Organ
    Ian Sangalang
    Calvin Abueva
    Eric Salamat
    Ryan Buenafe
    Vic Manuel
    Reil Cervantes
    RR Garcia
    Alex Nuyles
    Keep running, big boy.

not exactly. This will serve as a launch pad for potential NT candidates from the younger player pool. No better than to start them early.

what month is that tournament? or more importantly, will the schedule interfere with the UAAP/NCAA basketball competition?

            normally it's december.

So no UAAP/NCAA games. And most important of all classes are more into December activities.

Ideally, the roster should be a combination of players from the '08 and '10 u18 NTs and training pools (for continuity) to be reinforced by Gilas 3rd stringers (eg. Sison, Cawaling, Ballesteros, Ababou) with Toro acting as consultant. For additional ceiling, JdG can be added as a practice player and break him in slowly until he can crack the roster.

Practice tourneys can be the ASEAN-CBO, Zheng Cheng Gong Cup and our very own Manila Invitational, similar to Taiwan's practice of fielding 2 teams in the Jones Cup.

In addition, if the SBP has plans of working on our membership in the FISU, then the core (w/ Slaughter) can represent us in the 2011 Shenzen universiade.

RP cage team to SEAG to be formed after collegiate games

                              09/16/2010 | 10:19 PM

The formation of the RP men’s team to next year’s Southeast Asian Games will start as soon as the collegiate season is over. This should be done immediately as the country is in a serious bid to keep its domination of the sport in the region.

In the recent Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Board meeting, the country’s governing body for basketball readily approved the creation and subsequent training of the team eyeing to retain the title in the 2011 edition of the biennial meet in Indonesia.

Backed by the core of the Harbour Center team, the RP squad won the gold in the last staging of the SEA Games in Nakhonratchasima, Thailand.

The Filipinos have not lost the basketball title since 1991, winning it eight straight times.

Basketball was not played in the 2005 Manila SEA Games as the country was suspended by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) owing to a bitter leadership dispute between two warring groups claiming to have the right as the legal governing cage body here.

Among those being considered for the team are standout college players such as RR Garcia, Sam Marata, Aldrech Ramos, Nico Salva and Greg Slaughter, although a series of tryouts will still be held shortly after the collegiate season.

The SBP is also going to announce soon the head coach of the team to be composed of players aged 19-22 years old.

During the same SBP Board meeting, the association was informed about Indonesia’s last-minute withdrawal from the women's Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) championship next month in Manila.

With the Indons’ decision not to see action, only five teams are left to compete in the 7th edition of the meet set from Oct. 24 to 29.

Aside from the RP cagebelles, to be coached by Heidi Ong, also in the field are powerhouse teams Malaysia and Thailand, as well as Singapore and Laos.

The unexpected pull-out of Indonesia however, didn’t come without a price as the International Basketball Federation or FIBA decided to slap a $20,000 fine on the country.

The penalty was contained in a letter issued by FIBA-Asia secretary-general Dato Yeoh.

The hefty fine was slapped since, according to Yeoh, it was Indonesia itself which requested to join the tournament even when the deadline for submission of entries was long over.

FIBA and the SBP eventually acceded to the request.

The FIBA-Asia official stressed that Indonesia’s withdrawal messed up the rigid preparations being made by the SBP for the tournament.

The country’s hosting of the SEABA championship for women was among the items tackled by the SBP during its Board meeting.

The event is the first FIBA-sanctioned tournament to be hosted by the SBP and the first being staged by the country since the 2005 FIBA-Asia Champion’s Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

The Filipina cagebelles are eyeing to win their first ever SEABA title, a mean feat that would serve as their ticket for a stint in the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China this November.

Malaysia won the first five editions of the tournament, before Thailand ended its reign in 2007 by beating the Philippines in the battle for the gold medal.

The silver medal finish, incidentally, was the highest ever for the RP cagebelles, then backstopped by Fil-Am Vicky Brick and coached by Fritz Gaston. - RCJ, GMANews.TV
