    Cesafi To Go National

    By Marian C. Baring
    Sun.Star Staff Reporter

THE 2008 season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) will reach a wider range of audience as the former PBA commissioner, Noli Eala, is interested in giving Cesafi a national coverage.

Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy said Eala, who is one of the prime movers of the sports promotion company, Third Force Promotion, will be bringing Cesafi basketball and volleyball games on national television.

Eala came to Cebu during the final moments of the highly-sensational Cesafi finals last year and was reportedly overwhelmed at the turnout of the crowd and the kind of competition between finalists University of the Visayas and University of San Carlos.

“Eala sent Cesafi a letter for us to explore the possibility and the schools seems to welcome the concept,” said Tiukinhoy.

Eala and his team have promoted the Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista fight and has Cesafi next in its sights as they want to bring the provincial league not just to the Visayas and Mindanao crowd but also to the audiences of Luzon and NCR.

“Just as NCAA and UAAP are brought to Visayas and Mindanao audiences, it is time that Cesafi will be taken to the Luzon viewers,” Tiukinhoy added.

Tiukinhoy said it is a good thing for Cesafi schools because it will be an added mileage for them.

“This is a wide-scale advertising for the school and as an added measure, they do not need to spend extra. They just need to play better,” Tiukinhoy said.

The Third Force will be the ones to market the event and therefore, do not need to ask for extra fees from Cesafi. Tiukinhoy said that there is also a chance that Cesafi can even earn from it.

Another upside that Tiukinhoy finds from this is that schools will now try to have a better recruitment program for their basketball and volleyball teams.

“They need to show that they are very competitive otherwise, the whole nation will see it. They do not want everyone to see that they are just whipping boys,” said Tiukihoy.

The volleyball and basketball competitions will be aired over ABC 5 and Cesafi is hoping to sign a three-year contract with Cesafi.

that's the reason why it will interesting since people saw GS played for UV in CCL and their comments seem to be not good while JF played good as what was reported in the newspapers and he's making waves. Scoring not less than 22 and with a high of 50. Everybody knows that UV, USC & SWU are not participating in that tournament. Fajardo still has to prove his thing against the big men of UV such as Slaughter, Omandam, Lao among others. The 2 time MVP of USC Enrico Llanto and the upcoming Emel Rowe who is also reportedly a good player plus the Cobras Eric Zanoria and Maguate. everything is up for grabs.
interesting matchups for that opening will be USC vs. SWU (1st game) then UV vs. UC (2nd game) if that national tv coverage will push through.
the question is, who's going to cover the games? is it ABS-CBN who is also covering the UAAP and NCAA, ABC 5 who's covering the PBA or BTV who's covering the PBL? there is also one local channel in Cebu, the CCTN who's covering the local cage leagues like CECABA, SHABA and MVBA.

Call for more "Slaughters", meaning mediocre big men, whose only main asset in basketball is height?

                  Just kidding.

                  Call For More 'Slaughters'

FOLLOWING the sensation brought about by Filipino-American Gregory Slaughter to the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), other schools are intensifying their recruitment process are extending this to other countries.

Last week, two Fil-Ams from Guam arrived in Cebu and are currently training with the University of San Carlos preparing to solidify the USC Warriors’ arsenal for the 2008 season of the Cesafi.

USC head coach Jay Ramirez told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that their new recruits JP Cruz and Alfred Vitog are additions to USC’s crumbling lineup.

The two were recruited by US-based Peter Jao, Ramirez’s brother in-law, who was with him during their stint with the RP team.

USC’s star guard Niño Ramirez had used all of his playing years, leaving a whole in USC’s offensive front, while other dependable players Earvin Ferraren, Carlo Padayao and Harvey Lasalita will not be playing this season.

In Niño’s absence, however, Vitog will take his place. “Vitog, who can play the point and shooting guard positions, will be a huge factor in our back court,” said Jay, Niño’s father.

Ramirez added that he feels more confident that his team is beefed up by these Fil-Ams who are more experienced compared to his younger squad.

Both players have played in a commercial league in Guam and, according to Ramirez, are used to playing against bigger and more physical players that Cesafi will not be such a hard thing for them.

Vitog and Cruz are actually the second batch of recruits by USC. They earlier tapped Aussies Emel Rowe, PJ Estorque. Rowe, however, was eyed by Ateneo de Manila University and now trains under head coach Norman Black. Estorque will be arriving before the first semester starts.

For other schools, like Southwestern University, athletic director Ryan Aznar said that they are merely waiting for their alumni and contacts abroad to give them recommendations.

Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy said that this is the growing trend among the collegiate basketball nowadays even in Manila.

“They are bigger players and more experienced and they will surely be a big help in a team,” said Tiukinhoy.

He added that it is a welcomed development as it will improve the level of competition among schools.

“However, we cannot deny that for other schools, they are more concerned in making students out of basketball players and not basketball players of students. They see things differently and their process of recruitment is different,” said Tiukinhoy. (MCB)

Close this With the possible defection of 6-foot-4 Fil-Aussie Emel Rowe to the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, the University of San Carlos Warriors went back to the recruitment trail and snagged two new Fil-Americans from Guam to boost their title bid in the next season of the Cesafi basketball wars.

The two-time runners-up have beefed up their backcourt with the addition of 5’9 point guard JP Cruz and 5’11 combo guard Alfred Vitug to their already loaded roster.

The two players were brought to USC by a former teammate of head coach Jay Ramirez from his PBA days, Peter Jao.

The two played for Ace Hardware in a commercial league in Guam.

According to Ramirez, the 22-year old Cruz, who is originally from Pangasinan, may very well be their next starting guard as the latter has shown in their practices tenacity, power, and incredible leaping ability while Vitug, who is from Pampanga, is a deadly perimeter shooter.

The Warriors though, are not done yet with their harvest, as they have also added 6-foot-2 forward, EJ San Juan to their frontcourt, which already boasts of reigning MVP Enrico Llanto and new recruit Joven Cortez.

Another San Juan is also expected to join the Warriors’ ranks in the face of EJ’s brother, 6-foot-4 Nico San Juan.

In addition, USC is also expecting Fil-Aussie point guard PJ Estorque to arrive just in time for the season to start. The Warriors are also pursuing 6-foot-8 Antonio Herico and 6-foot guard Christopher Chinn. Both are Fil-Americans. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
