  • Philippine Sports Pathetic Because of Basketball

While congratulations are in order for Philippine basketball, Filipinos must pause and think about the state of the country's sports program.

How can a country of 90 million people lose to much smaller SEA countries (Singapore: 4.6 million, Malaysia: 25 million; Thailand: 65 million)?

Granted, political corruption has a lot to do with this pathetic showing, but there's also corruption the other five countries above the Philippines. Is the overemphasis on basketball also a major factor, a sport in which the Philippines has no chance - ever - to even compete in Asia? All the other SEA countries concede basketball to the Philippines, so why spend so much money in a sport in which it completely dominates? Why not send the NCAA or UAAP champions or the youth team, and spend the rest of the money in other sports programs?

no offense bro but population has nothing to do with talent as well sports program/development, and if that's the case, India should've been a world sports powerhouse country and Indonesia should have dominated SEA Games, because population-wise they are really ahead among other nations.

about the SEAG Basketball, it's an overkill, and yet your criticism that RP spends too much on basketball and not on other sports is somehow very general.

blame the government for not having enough money to fund sports development in the country and sports like athletics, boxing (to name a few) needs to run to private sponsors in order for them to survive, but don't blame our country for spending too much on basketball since it was a private entity (Mr. Romero of Harbour Center) who bankrolled this endeavour while on the other hand, other sports are also sponsored by private corporations/individuals and businesses, and it's just so happen that Basketball was very lucky to have so many generous Godfathers compared to the other sports. and on the practical side, you can't blame those basketball sponsors if they spend too much cash on basketball and basketball alone (without considering other sports), because its their choice and its their money, if other sports were as popular as basketball here in RP, there's no problem in looking for a multi-millionaire Padrino.
It's ironic to see limited efforts from players with maximum salary.
I wish they would apply "sabermetrics" in those financially challenged PBA teams to acquire players who are value for their money.

I agree with you that population isn't really the major factor, especially in the non-Western nations, but it's the sports development. It's just that the Philippines is probably the laughing-stock of Asian sports, especially after this disaster.

You're also right that basketball is financed most heavily by its sponsors, since it's the most popular sport in the country. Should these corporations then turn their attention to other sports where the Philippines has potential in competing? It's OK to safeguard the country's supremacy in basketball, but it's an overkill as you say. Therefore, these corporations should be encouraged to fund the other programs more than basketball.

Other Filipino athletes deserve better training and funding than the pennies they get from the government.

FIFA recently offered millions (billions?) to develop football in the Philippines and ask the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) to look for sponsors... while baseball just started the Baseball Philippines League...

Boxing on the other hand have no problem while basketball is over-sponsored which is not a surprise since the corporates expect profits for sponsorship and there's no other sports in RP can do that except basketball.... and maybe boxing and billiard...

in a way your right pinoyballer it is kinda discouraging when you see result like they did in the sea games
          and saints13 is right too...
but most of those population that you 2 were referring to are mostly concern on their daily living than sports...
they dont see a career in sport as a financially rewarding path...
so RP lack athlete in key sports..as a result you see a national team full of 'FIL AMs'
its true that filipinos are more incline to participate in basketball because it is after a national sport (whoever say its sepak need to look around)

the japanese have similar problem...baseball and soccer dominate the national attention...hence lacking in other sports...

this one is beyond the topic...

anyway...our country has too many basketball leagues on national tv, needless to enumerate, but some sports are on its way to the limelight just like volleyball which is somehow catching up with amateur basketball here in RP, there is the Shakeys V-League which is already institutionalized featuring college and university teams from UAAP and NCAA. but sad to say, it's not that exciting to watch compared to the games of Leila Barros when the Grand Prix had a leg here in RP, sooner or later I hope they'll find a way to package volleyball in a more interesting way, it's tv, why watch something boring when you can change the channel, lol. about that sports program thing, there is this plan of the Philippine Olympic Committee to have an olympic village (an athlete's training village) somewhere in the borders of Bamban Tarlac and Clark Field, Pampanga. the blueprints are already on their way, but the budget is the big problem, some structures will be named after private sponsors, for example a basketball gym will be named after a rich hotdog company, an aquatic center will be named after a filthy-rich president's spouse, stuffs like that. There are always genuine and innovative ideas for sports development but it won't be that fast to implement because it will always boil down to financial problems.

Filipinos are in denial. China is already a basketball power. Who's laughing at whom now? Philippine basketball will never be in the Olympics - ever - again. Why? Because there's only one slot for Asia. Does anyone think the Philippines will ever China in basketball - or any other sport - for that matter? Even if the Philippines is allowed to naturalize two giants, it will never come close to China. Dream on...

I agree of that because since basketball in the Philippines when before American colony during before the WW. and then Loyzaga's era when they won first asian medal and then up to better population because of PBA leagues were opened consisted were Jaworski and co. The other sports especially were Baseball, Boxing, Softball and Football. Baseball was former second popular sport here behind basketball when Philippines was baseball power during in 50's. But actually, Football was first number one sport in the country before basketball when Spanish colony. Those 4 sports were left population. Because our Filipino boys ambitioning to become a professional basketball superstar. So other sports were leasting number of Filipino people. But now, the other sports raise Shakeys V-League in volleyball and Inter-Commercial City baseball league I think in baseball. Football in the Philippines was already 100years and we'll start training camp for rise again. Softball's already asian power. Boxing still world power. Except for Pool Billiards we're still world dominant. Our other sports will be rise in future? Maybe it's not the end of the world.

Yeah but China still not world basketball power but still only asian power. They're 1 billion people and many nice players in other sports are Table Tennis, Badminton, Wushu, Rowing, those are their world power. It's very hard for us to qualifying for Olympic games because have only one slot. Yao and Wang will get older. Just wait for future...

I agree with you here bro...Talent identification is important...and that where we should start...don't blame the population...remember that most of Talented Filipinos are working as PROFESSIONALS abroad...only if our athletes are given the support they needed they can excel very well in any sports...
