  • 2007-2008 Off-Season HS / Collegiate Tournaments

With the UAAP, NCAA & CCL seasons over, its now time for the off-season collegiate leagues.

First, there's the "Metro Manila Basketball League (MMBL)", where games are held in various school courts. This involves the High School teams from various leagues like the UAAP, NCAA, etc., & a good chance to watch the upcoming High School prospects for next year's UAAP / NCAA / CCL wars. This tournament had actually started a couple of weeks ago, & the tournament is ongoing until Jan. 2008.

Another tournament, the "Fr. Martin Open Cup", has just started last Sat., Dec. 1, 2007. This involves the collegiate teams from the UAAP, NCAA, etc., & the games are also held on various school courts. Don't know how long the tournament will last, though. Another good tournament to see UAAP vs. NCAA teams in action.

The home and away league and the summer FMC Cup are better tournaments. The FMC Open will showcase a mixture of varsity and team B players. Not all of the top UAAP and NCAA teams will be fielding their top players. Some teams will not be participating at all. On the other hand, teams will be fielding their top players in the last 2 tournaments and basketball afficionados will get a chance to see who are the new recruits for next year.

I think this is an excellent tournament to see players from the Team B (for those schools w/ Team Bs). From there, maybe we can see which guys are worth elevating into Team A.

Fr. Martin Open Cup Update (Games Dec.1 & 2, 2007)

"Due to the Trillanes failed coup and the expected big rally at Mendiola bridge, we were forced to cancel the Friday games at La Consolacion College. As life at Mendiola normalized the following day, the opening was a green and go at the La Consolacion gymnasium.

Pre-tournament favorite University of the East showed why they deserve to be one of the tournament favorites as they humbled MLQU 94-85. Val Hezy Acuna and Paul Christian Zamar, son of former National Coach David Zamar led the scoring for the Red Warriors with 15 and 14 respectively.

San Sebastian Stags showed that they would be no pushover in this tournament, as the scored a big upset win against Far Eastern University Tamaraws 89-67, on the torrid shooting of Stag Jim Viray finishing with 24 points, on five (5) triples.

University of Santo Tomas showed-up in the game in full strength, with Philippine-SEAG team member Jervy Cruz present, humbled the deadly La Consolacion Blue Royals 85-80, on Cruz' 24 points and Khasim Mirza's 22 points, 14 of which were made in the last quarter.

The next day at the San Sebastian College-Recto gym, "Sunday Shocker" came a bit too early that day, as the San Sebastian Baycats of Cavite upset the Mapua Cardinals 68-67, on the second half torrid shooting of Brayan Filio who finished with 17 points, 15 in the last two quarters. Surprising, NCAA MVP Kevin dela Pena was scoreless in the game.

League newcomer Centro Escolar University showed they also would be no pushovers, as they beat the Philippine College of Criminology (PCCr) 71-64.

San Beda Red Lions Team A of Coach Mike Advani having the services of his NCAA Twin Towers, NCAA Rookie-of-the Year, David Marcelo and Jay-R "Baby Shaq" Taganas in his team, showed no mercy in beating Metro Manila College 87-56. Erwin Castillo led the Red Lions with 25 points and Taganas with 19

On Saturday, the Emeka Udo-led San Beda Red Lions Team B tests its mettle against tournament favorite University of the East at 10am, while San Sebastian Stags and the University of Santo Tomas goes for win number 2, as they face Adamson Falcons and the STI Olympians at 11:30am and 1pm respectively. All games will be at the La Consolacion gymnasium at Mendiola.

On Sunday, at the Arellano University-Legarda gymnasium, opening day losers FEU Tamaraws and the La Consolacion Blue Royals meet at 9am, while the San Beda Red Lions Team B guns for their second win on the debuting Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers at 11:30am. While debuting UAAP Champion De La Salle University Green Archers faces the other opening day loser, MLQU at 1pm.

Games are every Saturday and Sunday, at the La Consolacion-Manila and Arellano University gymnasiums respectively until December 16. The league will go on a Christmas break starting the 17th and will resume again on January 12."

The Saturday games in SBC will be interesting. The SBC B team are auditioning for the coaching staff of SBC and other schools. If they fail to make varsity, some can be expected to seek greener pastures with other schools like the transfers to UST. UE will be hard hit by graduation and must replace their veteran players. Zamar has toiled for team B for at least 2 years and will finally show his ability. Will the players serving residency in UE play?

The UST-STI game is a repeat of the CCL third place game. UST is smarting from the upset loss and will play without Jervy Cruz who is with the National team in Thailand. Adamson on the other hand will get a chance to field their transfer in residence and maybe their imports. Mike Galinato, formerly of Mapua, DLSU and SBC, is on the team together with Adamson's own imports from Guam. Is Jing Ruiz auditioning to be named permanent head coach of the team?

Yup, the SBC Team A & SBC Team B members likely are "auditioning" as to who will get a slot for the final lineup come next season's NCAA wars. For everybody's info, SBC's main stars (i.e., Sam Ekwe, Ogie Menor, Pong Escobal, etc.) won't be seeing action in this tournament. The 2 teams are composed of 2nd stringers & Team B players, an excellent chance for them to show what they've got since they will be getting maximum minutes & exposure in a respectable tournament. What everybody is waiting for, though, is the match between these 2 SBC teams, with Emeka Udo & Elvin Pascual going up against Dave Marcelo & Jay-R Taganas.

Oh yeah, right, it seems like AdU (who will be debuting this weekend) will be fielding their 6'3" & 6'5" imports from Guam in this tournament. That should prove interesting.

After their superb showing in the CCL, STI will be seeking to gain even more respectability if they end up beating more NCAA or UAAP teams. SSC-Cavite is also another minor league team looking for more respectability, after that upset win over Mapua.

(Courtesy of "AnthonyServinio" from the gameface.ph forums):

                  * No repeat for STI over UST this time around, as UST went out & gave them a resounding beating. Maybe next time for STI.

                  * UE reportedly had a pretty good big man, no. 17, who played well against SBC Team B. Take note: He was up against Emeka Udo, & yet delivered well. Could make a big impact on the coming UAAP season.

                        ****************

                        * Underdog La Consonsolacion College had a big win over SBC Team A last weekend. These guys look like they're good enough to play in the NCAA. I wonder if they have plans to join that league, what w/ rumors that PCU might finally leave the NCAA next season.

                        * Another underdog, STI College, lost by only 3 pts. to JRU. They're definitely stamping their class as one of the stronger teams outside of the NCAA/UAAP this season.

                        * Too bad that DLSU-SSC Cavite game had to be postponed, I wanted to see how SSC Cavite, another team outside the NCAA / UAAP out looking for respectability in the collegiate basketball scene.

BASKETBALL Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) Cebu Province director Lorenzo “Chao” Sy gears up for a busy year as he leads the staging of the Cebu Zonals for the 2008 National Students' Basketball Championships slated Jan. 9-13 at the Cebu Coliseum.

So far, a total of six schools have signified their intention to join the five-day tournament sponsored by Hotel Fortuna, La Fortuna Bakery, Pepsi Cola and Nature's Spring

Leading the cast is seven-time CESAFI champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers along with University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, Asian College of Technology (ACT) Cyber Knights and Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (SC-SIT) Skyblazers.

Chao Sy said that they will also invite the other Cebu-based schools such as the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, University of Southern Philippines Panthers (USPF) Panthers and Don Bosco College Greywolves.

The top two finishers in the tournament will represent Cebu in the National Students Championships, scheduled on February 25-March 5 also at the Coliseum.

Aside from the top two teams, Sy said they are also planning to send the third placer to the National Finals because as a host city, Cebu might be given the privilege to have three representatives in the national tilt.

Aside from the men's collegiate division, a separate tournament for the women's and juniors will be also be held.

SORRY BUT I have to make some clarifications regarding this tournament -- this is a continuation of the decades-old National Inter-Collegiate and Inter-Secondary tournaments organized by the old discredited Chinese-controlled Basketball Association of the Phillippines (BAP). The hosting rights were granted to Cebu by the BAP during its so-called "National Congress" held last month in Manila. This was the same congress that saw the election of Prospero Pichay as the new BAP President.

Cebu's Lorenzo Chao Sy attended the said congress and accepted the hosting chores because he is a very generous man who is just doing his share for the sport he loves without thinking of the politics around the scene. For years, he has silently donated a small fortune to help propagate basketball in Cebu. He hopes the top schools of the NCAA and UAAP accept his invitation to play in Cebu.
